The World Woven by Needle & Thread: When a Micro Crochet Artist Encounters the Smallest Japanese Crochet Hook
Are you familiar with the micro crochet artist, Lucia Dolgopolova, who has gained attention on social media?
Crochet, derived from the French word "crochet" (meaning hook or hooked knitting), is a traditional knitting technique created using a specialized hook. She utilizes this crochet technique to weave items smaller than 5mm.
Her works bring immense joy and surprise to a small world, featuring creations like a tiny duck measuring just 1.5mm and an owl perched on the tip of a match. Interestingly, she uses a crochet hook made in Japan and draws inspiration from Japanese history and literature.
We spoke with her about her awakening as an artist and the feelings she imbues in her works, as well as her future aspirations.

Influenced by Artistic Parents, She Pursues the Path of a Crochet Artist
Lucia first encountered Japanese crochet hooks about 10 years ago. Born to artistic parents, she showed interest in art and crafts from a young age and studied the cello for a long time.Among her interests, she became particularly fascinated with knitting, taught by her mother.
"Knitting has been my hobby since childhood. I loved knitting clothes and designing accessories, and the teddy bears and miniature crocheted toys I made felt almost like fairies to me. I played with them and expanded my imaginative world.

"Crochet and knitting are, in essence, my life. Once I began to develop my unique crocheting style, I started dreaming of becoming an artist who creates new things. I vividly remember the moment I took my first step in that direction."
She obtained a master's degree in linguistics and economics at university. Although she had several career options, she chose to follow her heart and embark on the path of a crochet artist.
She started by designing online-selling crochet clothes, blankets, and accessories. In the past, her largest creation was a 50cm teddy bear with a blanket, and she sometimes crafts smaller dolls measuring 1.5cm or 3cm, but her current focus is on micro sizes below 5mm.

"My micro crochet works began as an experiment. I wondered what would happen if I used even smaller hooks or sewing thread, and I quickly put those ideas to the test. During that process, I encountered the world's smallest crochet hook produced in Japan."
She continued with shining eyes.
"The 0.35mm hook, essential for micro crochet, was made by a Japanese person. Every time I sit down to crochet, I feel immense gratitude towards the people who created this incredibly small hook.
"If this crochet hook had not been made by a Japanese person, my micro works would not exist."

Creative Stories Reflected in the Miniature World
Once she began posting her micro crochet works on social media, she received an overwhelming response."People seem to love seeing things that are unbelievably small, and I'm really happy about that. Since my works seem almost impossible to create due to their miniature nature, in a way, I think it’s because they appear nonsensical that people appreciate them highly."
What draws people in is not only the delicacy of the miniature size. Each piece she creates breathes with its own story: adorable animals with charming expressions, dynamic cellists almost conveying sound, and warm conversations between characters. Each of these works weaves a story that gently stimulates the imagination of those who view them.

"Every piece I create carries a story," she says.
As a cellist, her sources of inspiration are diverse, drawn from nature, such as animals, trees, and mountains, as well as life stories and music. Additionally, as someone who loves reading and writing, she sometimes writes down stories before creating her works.
"For example, there’s a piece inspired by a dream I had one night. Beneath a blooming cherry blossom tree, there stood a samurai.
"The samurai slightly turned his head towards me, standing dignified as if unafraid of anything. Amidst the flowing wind, I captured that moment of the samurai waiting for a boat and expressed it as a micro crochet piece."

On the other hand, the story behind the very tiny yellow duckling is different. Lucia describes it as a story that exists between life and death.

"The duckling is very small, at only 1.5mm, and is likely the smallest in the world. It’s so tiny that it seems almost nonexistent, but upon closer inspection, you can see its eyes and the shape of its head. It is simultaneously a young duck and incredibly fragile, easily ruined by a moment's movement."
Lucia continues to share a steady stream of ideas through social media. Her creative process has remarkable characteristics. The moment an idea comes to her, the entire process of knitting is completed in her mind.
According to her, she can instantly calculate the number of stitches needed based on shape and size, thanks to her abundant experience and exceptional talent. Astonishingly, without using sketches or magnifying glasses, she can finish even works smaller than 5mm in just 2 to 3 hours.

Regarding her process, she expresses it as "peaceful, endless, and filled with infinite creativity."
"My creations represent a worldview where balance is essential. I trust the ideas that come to me and bring them to form. Some may wonder, 'Why create such tiny works?' On the other hand, many resonate with the emotions embedded in my pieces. Of course, there are those who may not prefer my works, but I accept that as another form of emotional expression."
The Boundless World of Miniature Stories

Although Lucia has presented her works in numerous exhibitions, she has not particularly defined a final goal as an artist.
"Life continues day by day. I feel inspiration, ideas emerge, and I bring them to form. Then I wait for the next idea to arise. In 2025, I hope to express some stories I have been nurturing through micro-crochet.
"There is no end to creation, and I cannot predict what ideas will sprout. However, when inspiration strikes, I want to embrace it and share it with everyone as a work of art."
From her deft fingers wielding delicate Japanese crochet hooks and threads emerges Lucia's miniature world. Her rich creativity is sure to further stimulate our imaginations.
