What Defines the Ultimate Urban Backpack? Manhattan Portage Has the Answer.

2026.03.31
The demands placed on backpacks in urban life are constantly evolving. This includes the functionality to carry digital gadgets safely, a design that seamlessly blends with everyday attire, and the rugged durability to handle daily wear and tear.
Manhattan Portage, a brand born in New York, released the "Pacific Lincoln Square Backpack" this spring—an 'urban backpack' that masterfully balances all these elements. Guided by the insights of Yuka Shiroki, the brand's PR Manager, let's dive into the philosophy behind its design and features.

A Collection for Urban Business Professionals

The "Pacific Collection" debuted in the Spring/Summer 2021 season.
"Our main audience is professional adults working in the city," Shiroki says. "The collection is built on the brand's long-standing reputation for toughness and utility, but with enhanced features designed for the modern professional, whether for daily commutes or business trips. Its stylish design, which pairs well with suits and jackets, has also been a huge hit."
Every model is designed for the safe transport of work essentials, coming standard with features like a padded laptop sleeve and a waterproof lining. Additionally, it's packed with features for the highly mobile urbanite, including expandable compartments for varying loads and a luggage pass-through for easy attachment to a suitcase.

The Goal: Balancing Everyday Ease of Use with Ample Storage

So, where does the new "Pacific Lincoln Square Backpack" fit into the Pacific Collection?
"This model is all about striking the perfect balance between everyday usability and generous storage," she explains. "It's a box-shaped backpack made from durable CORDURA® nylon. Design-wise, we aimed for that sweet spot between formal and casual—it's not too stuffy, but not too relaxed either, making it perfect for work and play."
The choice of a boxy silhouette is a key part of this design philosophy.
"In today's urban lifestyle, we're carrying more digital gadgets like laptops and tablets than ever, so internal organization and visibility are crucial. The box shape is great for this because it provides a wide opening, making it easy to access your belongings and see everything at a glance."
However, traditional box-shaped backpacks can sometimes look bulky and feel a bit too casual. That's why this model was designed with a subtle taper toward the bottom. This ensures plenty of storage capacity while creating a sleeker, more refined silhouette when worn.
The tapered silhouette, which narrows from top to bottom, gives it a sleek profile.
The model's name was inspired by New York City's Lincoln Square.
"That neighborhood is a hub for art schools and performance centers, a place where tradition and modernity, formal and casual, seamlessly coexist. We wanted to capture that unique vibe in the backpack's design."

Material Matters: A Fusion of Sophistication and Toughness

The main material chosen is 610D CORDURA® HP Fabric with a waterproof coating. It’s a material from the CORDURA® brand, which Manhattan Portage has trusted for years, known for its finer thread and clean, polished look.
"While our traditional 1000 denier CORDURA® nylon is incredibly rugged, it can sometimes look a bit too rough for professional settings. For this model, we specifically chose the 610D CORDURA® HP Fabric with a waterproof coating. It retains excellent durability but has a more refined, elegant texture. This means it won't look out of place with a suit or jacket and is also less likely to cause pilling on your clothes."
The main fabric is the lightweight and high-strength 610D CORDURA® HP Fabric with a waterproof coating (pictured on the right).
They also made a conscious decision to avoid going overboard with waterproofing.
'If we were to make the entire bag completely waterproof, the resulting texture would scream 'outdoor gear,' which could compromise its versatility for city living. That's why we've only applied a PVC coating to the reverse side of the main fabric.'
The result is a bag that maintains a lightweight look while providing ample water resistance for everyday use.
The front panel, which is most exposed to rain, is made from 100% waterproof tarpaulin vinyl. This strategic choice of material for the most vulnerable area ensures a perfect balance of practicality and peace of mind.
The rugged tarpaulin vinyl on the front also embodies the brand's 'NEW YORK TOUGH' concept.

Smart Details for Life on the Go

But how does it fare in terms of usability? In the city, a backpack's comfort isn't just about how much it can hold; it's about how easy it is to use while you're on the move.
The first thing you notice when you put it on is the clever placement of the main compartment's zipper. It’s positioned on the side closest to your back, making it incredibly easy to access even when you’re wearing the bag on your chest in a crowded train.
Not having to take off the bag or twist into an awkward position just to grab something is a major advantage for city dwellers.
Unlike conventional backpacks, the zipper is on the reverse side. The opening faces your back, making it easy to access your belongings even when wearing the bag on your front.
The interior also features a simple, user-friendly design. The main compartment is a single, open space, maximizing the capacity of its boxy shape. Meanwhile, a strategically placed laptop sleeve and pockets for smaller items make organization a breeze.
The laptop sleeve fits up to a 14-inch device and features approximately 5mm of built-in padding.
Every detail has been considered for carrying comfort. The shoulder harness is equipped with high-cushion padding, while the back panel uses a breathable mesh fabric to prevent stuffiness, even in the summer. It's a design that comfortably supports your daily commute, whether by train, foot, or bicycle.

The Perfect Urban Backpack, Achieved Through "Subtraction"

Despite being packed with functional details, the bag maintains a remarkably simple exterior.
'If you pack in too many features, it inevitably creates 'noise' in both usability and aesthetics. Since this is an everyday item, we focused on making it stress-free and ensuring it blends seamlessly into your daily life.'
Superfluous straps and harnesses have been kept to a minimum, reducing the risk of snagging on the train or in a crowd. In an urban environment, this very lack of clutter becomes a feature in itself.
The padded shoulder harnesses are curved to fit the contours of your body, offering an excellent fit and reducing the strain on your shoulders.
By keeping only the essentials and eliminating the superfluous, the pursuit of usability is clear. The "Pacific Lincoln Square Backpack" quietly exudes an aesthetic that is distinctly New York.
