Timeless 'Kindness' and Ever-Evolving 'Fashion'—Why Mell-Chan Has Been a Beloved Icon for Over 30 Years
For over 30 years since her debut, the doll Mell-chan has nurtured the gentle spirit of children who want to care for someone. In recent years, her appeal has expanded beyond nurturing play, embracing the joy of fashion and dressing up.
We sat down with Natsuko Doi and Chisaki Takagi from the Toy Division at Pilot Corporation to dive into everything from Mell-chan's origin story to her current spotlight on social media and dedication to fashion.
The Origin Story: Ink Technology from Writing Instruments
Launched in 1992, Mell-chan is a long-loved doll now celebrating her 33rd year. She has long been cherished as an educational toy that fosters compassion through play, but why did a writing instrument manufacturer like Pilot decide to create a doll?"Actually, 'thermochromic ink'—ink that changes color with temperature—had been developed within our company long before the erasable FriXion ballpoint pens, which use frictional heat to erase writing, hit the market. But it was taking a while to refine the quality to a level suitable for writing instruments. The Toy Division was born from the question of whether we could apply this technology in another way.
The color-changing feature was a perfect match for scenarios like bath time. After much trial and error, the idea we finally landed on was 'a doll whose hair changes color in the bath'," says Doi.

A New Era of Communication: Evolving with the Times
Her unique feature of "hair changing color in the bath" once shot to fame through TV commercials. Today, the stage has shifted to social media, where Mell-chan is carving out a new presence.According to Doi, her approachable style—which stays true to her character while subtly sharing trends and everyday moments—has struck a chord with many, steadily growing her fan base to include adults as well as children.

"Mell-chan is actually an 'old-school user' of X (formerly Twitter). We set up her account back in 2010, during the dawn of corporate social media, long before companies were actively using it for marketing. At the time, there wasn't really a strategic culture around 'corporate accounts,' so we more or less just set one up to see what would happen.
On Instagram, however, we tailor our content to the needs of the mothers in our audience. In contrast to X, we focus on creating content with a more supportive and relatable feel."
From Classic to Contemporary: The Evolution of Mell-chan's Fashion
Starting with the original “Ofuro Sukisuki Mell-chan (Bath-Loving Mell-chan)," numerous series have been released over the years. Throughout this time, Mell-chan's fashion has also undergone a major evolution to keep up with the trends. In the early days, her outfits were often classic styles with pink frills. Today, however, her wardrobe is incredibly diverse, featuring everything from dresses with trendy color palettes to stylish hoodie ensembles.
"We've gradually updated her outfit designs to match the times, but for a long time, she was often seen as having a 'slightly old-fashioned' image. While preserving Mell-chan's signature cuteness, in recent years we've started to actively incorporate new, trend-conscious styles inspired by current culture," says Doi.
And indeed, the current catalog is packed with trendy items like the "Mermaid Dress," which can be worn as both a swimsuit and a dress, and the "Neon Hoodie Set."

At the same time, the lineup is also rich with outfits that enhance children's role-playing fun, including career costumes like a childcare worker or a doctor, kimonos, and kindergarten uniforms. These thoughtful additions are designed to spark imagination at every turn.

Nurturing a "Handmade Outfit" Culture with the Fans
While the commercial lineup continues to evolve, a "handmade outfit" culture, where fans themselves become the creators, has also blossomed in recent years. A key sign of this trend is the stream of sewing and knitting books being published.Through books such as "Clothes & Accessories for Mell-chan, Knitted with Crochet and Needles" (Nitto Shoin Publishing) and "Mell-chan’s Stylish Dress-up Fashion Book" (Nihon Vogue Sha), a whole new world for Mell-chan is opening up—one that’s distinct from her ready-made collections.

"Ever since the 2019 release of "Clothes & Accessories for Mell-chan, Knitted with Crochet and Needles," we've teamed up with various publishers to release a whole series of handmade clothing books, and they've been a huge hit.
The book "Mell-chan’s Stylish Dress-up Fashion Book" is especially popular, featuring super stylish, Instagram-worthy looks for Mell-chan. Each publisher brings their own unique flavor, showcasing Mell-chan's charm from a fresh perspective.
Thanks to the rise of social media, more people are sharing their handmade creations, which is helping Mell-chan connect with a whole new audience. We're seeing a ton of different ways people are enjoying her, from adults picking it up as a hobby to crafting handmade outfits as gifts for their kids and grandkids.
We were getting a lot of requests from fans for things like, 'realistic, human-like clothing designs you can't find in stores,' and 'calm, monotone outfits.' In response to that demand, we collaborated with publishers to make these dress-up books a reality.
The interest in handmade crafts really exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the demand for stay-at-home activities skyrocketed," says Doi.

Behind the Scenes: Designing for Today's Trends
The world of Mell-chan is a vibrant place, filled with a cast of unique characters like her little sister, Nene-chan, and her friends, Ao-kun and Lily-chan. The latest addition, 'Neo-rin,' is the one who truly captures today's top trends. It's not just her modern look, with trendy pink inner-color hair—her entire wardrobe is packed with the latest styles to match her persona as a content creator.
Design planning, including for 'Neo-rin's' fashion, kicks off about a year and a half before a product's launch. The process starts with rough ideas, moves through multiple prototypes, and is gradually polished before heading into mass production.

Throughout the process, we place a high value on what real kids are into. We look at kids' fashion magazines like “Nico☆Puchi (kids’ fashion magazine)” for inspiration to make sure we're designing clothes with popular colors and styles," explains Takagi, who is in charge of the project.
"Doll sets often come with limitations on how much ornamentation we can add, but we're always finding creative ways to give the outfits a 'trendy vibe' despite those constraints.
For instance, we'll incorporate detailed designs like printing a realistic-looking 'zipper.' This allows us to deliver a modern feel even when working within certain limitations."
Building for the Future: A Co-Creation Project with Fans
While capturing the current mood with off-the-shelf outfits, the Mell-chan brand is also pouring energy into forward-thinking initiatives. One standout example is a co-creation project with Kyoritsu Women's University. Doi tells us more about these future-focused efforts."Right now, we're working with a professor from the Department of Clothing Science in the Faculty of Home Economics at Kyoritsu Women's University, along with students from the faculties of Home Economics, International Studies, and Business. It's a project centered on the theme of 'upcycling,' where we're creating clothes for Mell-chan using old garments filled with personal memories.
We hope this will inspire former Mell-chan fans to enjoy crafting while reconnecting with their own childhood memories. Plus, the whole idea of upcycling just feels so relevant and perfect for today's world.
Looking ahead, we'd love to develop this into something like a parent-child crafting workshop, where they can turn clothes their kids have outgrown into new outfits for Mell-chan. We want to keep actively proposing these kinds of sustainable, heartwarming creative projects."
