We spoke with Shinji Yamamoto, the man behind the Buddy Pants, from the department that oversees the planning and development of Mizuno's globally released apparel.

"The project's origin was a desire to create pants that could keep up with modern, active lifestyles. We aimed to design pants that could be a true BUDDY, or partner, covering everything from commuting and remote work to gym sessions, sports, and casual outings around town."

He says their main focus was on mobility.

"While they are fundamentally designed for daily use, we leveraged Mizuno's identity as a sports brand to really maximize their mobility."

This led them to focus on the pattern.

"In developing competition wear for athletes, Mizuno has created specific patterns tailored to the movements of each sport. The Buddy Pants utilize pattern theory derived from analyzing body movements across a variety of sports."

A Pattern Design for Ultimate Mobility, Inspired by Ski Pants

The inspiration came from competitive skiing.

"For many years, Mizuno has provided apparel for demonstrators competing in the All Japan Ski Technical Championships. During their turns, they continuously perform deep flexing movements, sometimes so deep their knees touch their chests.

"To handle such demanding flexion, you need a special pattern that enhances the leg's range of motion while also making the most of the fabric's elasticity. The Buddy Pants apply the principles used in these ski pants that accommodate deep flexion. They provide smooth support for leg movements in everything from desk work to sports."

The absence of side seams is another key feature of these pants.

"On the lower body, the skin stretches the most at the knees and the seat. A seam running along the line connecting these two points can cause the fabric to pull and restrict the skin's natural stretch, so we eliminated the side seams.

"Furthermore, the stretchiness of the yoke on the back panel is crucial for bending forward smoothly. For this, we adopted pattern designs from our golf pants and removed the center-back seam as well."

However, removing the seams presented a new challenge.

"When you omit the side seams, it becomes harder to create a clean silhouette, which is a disadvantage from a design perspective. This is another area where the principles of ski pant design proved useful.

"The demonstrators in the Technical Championships are also judged on their appearance when standing still, so their posture has to look good. By adopting the 3D tailoring and tapered cut of ski pants, we were able to achieve a sleek, clean silhouette."

It's also worth noting that all models feature a durable water-repellent finish.

"On a rainy day, even with an umbrella, your pants can get wet from wind-blown rain or splashes from the ground. The water-repellent finish not only sheds water but also helps resist stains, making it incredibly useful for everyday life."

Combining Sportswear-Level Functionality with a Design Fit for Urban Use

The Buddy Pants lineup is divided into two categories: Lifestyle and Outdoor.

"The lineup is structured for easy selection based on your needs. If you prioritize ease of movement, go for 'Lifestyle'; if you want something lightweight, choose 'Outdoor.'"

I tried on the "Stretch Water-Repellent Tapered Pants" , which is said to be the most popular item in the Lifestyle category.

They're light and easy to move in, just like sportswear.

In addition to a fit that feels like it envelops your lower body, you can bend and stretch smoothly. When you sit in a chair, there's no tightness in the knees, no pulling or twisting. They seem perfectly capable of handling running or cycling.

The silhouette is a slightly slim regular fit. The tapered line makes your legs look sleek, so they could easily be a go-to for business settings, worn just like slacks.

The fabric used is a 100% polyester 2-way stretch material with a supple texture.

Similarly, the "Stretch Water-Repellent Tapered Pants" , also made with stretch material, features a relaxed rise and thigh, tapering down to the hem.

Additionally, some colors in the Buddy Pants range offer a short-length "SH" model, allowing you to choose a silhouette that suits your body type and preference.

"It meets needs like wanting a proper full-length fit or a breezy cropped fit. If the waist is perfect but the length is too long, choosing the short-length model eliminates the need for hemming."

Since their launch in February 2024 at directly managed stores and on the company's own e-commerce site, sales have been steadily climbing.

"We've received a lot of feedback in reviews, with comments like, \"I can use them for my commute and for exercise,\" and \"I can wear them all day without getting tired.\" We feel confident that we're delivering the value we intended to our customers."

"This model uses Mizuno's proprietary functional material, which features a special multi-layer structure to block wind. It was originally used for golf and outdoor wear, and the softshell-like material has excellent stretch and a water-repellent finish that sheds rain and snow."

"We've developed lifestyle-oriented pants before, but they all focused primarily on the functionality of the material.
