The Latest in the "Heel-Less Shoe" Series! Exploring the Unique Features and Functionality of Mizuno's WAVE REBELLION FLASH 3

2025.09.09
Mizuno's SMOOTH SPEED PROJECT gathers experts armed with the know-how to make people run faster. In their quest for smoothness in speed running, they developed SMOOTH SPEED ASSIST—a unique, patented sole structure from Mizuno that delivers a smoother high-speed ride.
Currently, the top racing models featuring SMOOTH SPEED ASSIST are the "WAVE REBELLION PRO 3" and the "WAVE REBELLION PRO LOW." Now, the "WAVE REBELLION FLASH," designed for runners aiming to clock in under three to four hours in a full marathon, has received an update. Let's dive into its evolution.
The WAVE REBELLION FLASH 3 racing shoe features a high-performance midsole material for significantly improved cushioning and responsiveness. ¥20,900 (tax included).

Dramatically Improved Cushioning and Responsiveness from the Previous Model

The biggest leap forward from the last model is the change in midsole material.
"The midsole material is split into top and bottom layers by the plate. While the previous model used MIZUNO ENERZY LITE+ in the top midsole, this new version incorporates MIZUNO ENERZY XP.
MIZUNO ENERZY XP is the same material used in the top-tier Wave Rebellion Pro models. It's a lightweight material offering excellent responsiveness and cushioning, and for the Flash 3, we've fine-tuned it for the target pace of its runners. The bottom midsole has been upgraded from the standard MIZUNO ENERZY in the previous model to MIZUNO ENERZY NXT in this one.
As a result, while maintaining high stability, the forefoot now has about 22% more cushioning and 32% more responsiveness. Both cushioning and responsiveness in the rearfoot have also been improved by about 17% compared to the previous model," explains Shingo Sudo from Mizuno's Global Footwear Product Headquarters.

Like its predecessor, it features a glass fiber-reinforced nylon plate.
"Another key feature of the Wave Rebellion Flash 3 is its glass fiber plate instead of a carbon one. While carbon plates offer incredible responsiveness, they tend to be quite rigid. Glass fiber is also a stiff material, but it's more flexible compared to carbon, which should make it feel more approachable for a wider range of runners."

Midsole Structure Also Updated

In the previous model, a cushion hole extended from the forefoot to the heel, but in the new model, the forefoot section has been filled in. This change enhances responsiveness and adds a sense of stability during toe-off. The sole's base has also been slightly widened. While some might worry that the increased cushioning and responsiveness from the new midsole materials could compromise stability, filling in the forefoot cushion hole and widening the base ensure that stability is firmly in place.

The shoe continues to feature SMOOTH SPEED ASSIST, Mizuno's unique, patented sole structure that delivers a smoother high-speed ride.
SMOOTH SPEED ASSIST is a patented sole design that leverages insights gained from developing Mizuno's short-distance track spikes. The forefoot is curved to promote a natural angle for forefoot strikers, while the midfoot is extended to provide stability and a significant energy return upon landing.
The cutaway heel is another signature feature. In typical running shoes, when a runner lands on their forefoot, gravity causes the heel to drop—a movement stabilized by the calf muscles. SMOOTH SPEED ASSIST is engineered to reduce the strain on these calf muscles during this phase.
The curved forefoot and cutaway heel are distinctive features of the patented SMOOTH SPEED ASSIST.
The heel bevel is at a 6-degree angle, a slight tweak from the previous model's 5 degrees, adjusted to complement the new midsole material.
The "Wave Rebellion Flash 3" is designed to help runners crush their goals, thanks to its high-rebound sole material that generates explosive speed and a unique sole structure that helps you maintain that pace, even in the later stages of a race.

Experience a Natural Boost in Pace

When I slipped my feet into the "Wave Rebellion Flash 3," the first thing I noticed was the mesh upper, which offers a soft, snug fit. It instantly feels like a true racing shoe.
While the cut-out heel might seem unusual, it's completely unnoticeable once you start running (though it does feel a bit odd when walking slowly). It naturally encourages a midfoot strike, delivering excellent responsiveness (quick rebound) and making it easy to find your rhythm.
Perhaps because it features a fiberglass-infused plate instead of a carbon one, I didn't experience any of the harsh stiffness or push-back you sometimes get. This makes it a fantastic gateway shoe for runners new to plated footwear.
As someone who typically gravitates toward stability models and lacks a bit of leg strength, I did feel some potential for instability over longer distances. However, for shorter runs, it was perfectly fine. For well-trained runners aiming to conquer a full marathon, this shoe could be a powerful secret weapon for smashing personal bests.
It feels like the shoe actively helps you maintain your pace.
