The Unstoppable Evolution of Mizusawa Down: What High-Quality Means for the Latest Models
The iconic Japanese down jacket, Mizusawa Down, was developed in 2008, bringing together the technology and development expertise of Descente.
Initially, it was created for the Japanese national team to wear at the Vancouver Olympics. The city of Vancouver, with its frequent rain and snow, demanded waterproofness and high functionality. Mizusawa Down wasn't born for commercial sale, but from a desire to provide athletes with the absolute best quality.
In this article, we'll introduce the latest items for 2025 and take a deep dive into the material technology, specifications, and integrated features. We'll also get an inside look at the recently rebuilt factory in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, the home of Mizusawa Down.

Mizusawa Down's Top-Tier Model: The 'VERTEX'
First, let's introduce Mizusawa Down's top-tier model, the 'VERTEX.'This model was updated in 2024 and is being released again this year. It's a high-spec item using 1000 fill power[1] down. In addition to its comfort, a key feature of Mizusawa Down is the sheer lightness of the item itself. The VERTEX is the model that pursues this 'lightness' even further.
While the classic 'MOUNTAINEER' model is already incredibly lightweight at about 1,000g, the VERTEX takes it a step further, achieving an astonishing lightness of approximately 900g. The ability to shave off another 100g from an already light product speaks volumes about their technical prowess.
There are other reasons behind this incredible lightness. By using 1000 fill power down, which boasts the highest class of loftiness among feathers, the structure can trap a large amount of air with even a small quantity of down, delivering high heat retention. Furthermore, in the pursuit of warmth, a noteworthy feature is the use of 'HEAT NAVI' for the lining, which is specially pleated.
To explain, the 'HEAT NAVI' material is a proprietary fiber technology developed by Descente. It works by absorbing sunlight and converting it into heat within the fabric itself.
By pleating this HEAT NAVI to increase its surface area and placing it on the back, the design effectively spreads warmth from the back throughout the entire body. These materials and specifications are commercialized only after repeated verification tests at their in-house research facility in Osaka, confirming factors like the 'speed of warming' and the 'maximum temperature reached.'
With its focus on warmth and lightness, the design is kept as minimal as possible. This is another major characteristic of the top-tier VERTEX model.

The 'Dual Zip Ventilation' System for On-the-Go Temperature Control
Now, let's touch upon a unique feature found in many Mizusawa Down models.First, the 'down packs' that partition the down are fixed using heat-bonding, a specification that eliminates the need for stitching on the outer fabric. This prevents rain and wind from penetrating, achieving a high level of waterproofness. This stitchless technique also creates a structure where heat is less likely to escape, thus improving insulation. This technology is a standard feature on basically all Mizusawa Down models and has cleared strict quality standards.
Additionally, the front features the 'Dual Zip Ventilation' system. It consists of two parallel rows of zippers. When you close the outer zipper, it creates a highly waterproof structure.
On the other hand, closing the inner zipper reveals a mesh fabric, allowing outside air to be drawn into the garment. This structure provides a mechanism to efficiently release uncomfortable heat and moisture that can build up inside the jacket. Ventilation zippers are also equipped under the arms, allowing the air taken in from the front to be expelled from the underarms, enabling ventilation while the jacket is still on.
Because these items boast more than enough insulation for city wear, this function for properly releasing heat is extremely convenient for urban life.

A Down Jacket Featuring GORE-TEX Fabric, Released Annually
Mizusawa Down also releases items featuring GORE-TEX Fabric. Allow us to introduce the new 2025 model: the "GORE-TEX ENDEVOR."This model incorporates GORE-TEX Fabric, developed by the American company W. L. Gore & Associates, and is designed with a rugged aesthetic, featuring a natural texture from its cotton-like recycled nylon.
The cuffs feature a snap-button adjuster system for a customizable fit. The design deliberately exposes this feature, adding to the item's unique appeal.
The material used is "GORE-TEX 60d NATURAL PLAIN WEAVE (ゴアテックス 60デニール ナチュラルプレーンウィーヴ)," characterized by its fluorine-free water-repellent finish and membrane[2]. With the rise of "PFAS-free" fluorine regulations in North America, this material stands out as a sustainable option that meets these new standards.

Mizusawa Down's Distinctive Pockets
A standout feature in Mizusawa Down's design is the 'figure-eight' zippered pockets. There's a practical reason behind this unique design choice, which is featured on both the GORE-TEX ENDEVOR mentioned earlier and the classic "MOUNTAINEER" model. The name 'MOUNTAINEER' speaks for itself. When wearing a climbing backpack, the hip belt often blocks access to standard lower pockets on a jacket. To solve this, the pockets were raised and angled in a 'figure-eight' configuration.
This design has since been carried over to other Mizusawa Down and DESCENTE ALLTERRAIN shell jackets, cementing its status as an iconic brand signature.

Beyond the Classic: 'OVERSIZED JACKET "MOUNTAINEER"'
The 'OVERSIZED JACKET \"MOUNTAINEER\"' is an updated take on the brand's long-standing classic, the 'MOUNTAINEER.' While the original is known for its slim silhouette, this new version features a roomier design, with the chest and hem expanded by about two sizes.Key features like the heat-sealed down packs and dual-zip ventilation are naturally carried over. Additionally, just like the regular model, it utilizes 'Dermizax™,' a Japanese-developed micro-stretch fabric engineered with advanced waterproof and breathable technology.

New Factory Opens, Ushering in the Next Era
A major development this year is the opening of a new Mizusawa Factory, the production hub for Mizusawa Down. With a history spanning nearly half a century, the original factory was rebuilt to the tune of approximately 3 billion yen due to its age. The new factory's interior moves away from a cold, industrial feel, instead offering a warm and inviting space with woody accents. At the same time, the space is filled with the latest high-tech equipment used to create Mizusawa Down, offering a unique factory view unlike any other. Moving forward, this new facility will be the birthplace of the brand's high-quality items.

Numerous advanced features are seamlessly integrated into a minimalist and sophisticated design. This is the very essence of Mizusawa Down. Thanks to a relentless spirit of inquiry that drives functional updates every season and a unique, unparalleled development technology, this year's lineup is as impressive as ever.
This is precisely why Mizusawa Down continues to be cherished by fans in Japan and all over the world.
[1] Fill Power: An indicator of down quality. A higher number means the down traps more air, resulting in superior insulation and higher quality. High fill power allows for a puffier garment with less down, making the final product lighter.
[2] Membrane: A film-like layer sandwiched between layers of technical nylon fabric (e.g., in 2- or 3-layer constructions). It is engineered to block water droplets from entering while allowing water vapor (sweat) to escape.
