How Did They Make It Breathable Yet Water-Repellent? A Deep Dive Into the Challenge Mont-Bell's 'Cool Parka' Tackled
The 'Cool Parka' from Mont-bell Co., Ltd. is crafted from a 100% polyester fabric that masterfully balances breathability with high water repellency. Amazingly, it boasts a UV protection rate of over 90%, even in its white version.
Combining breathability and water repellency is a classic challenge, as is achieving high UV protection in light-colored fabrics. So, what drove the team to tackle these technical hurdles without compromise?
We sat down with Kei Enomoto from Mont-bell to get the inside scoop on the parka's functional design and the incredible dedication that went into its creation.
PROFILE

Kei Enomoto
From the Mont-bell Co., Ltd. Public Relations team. Until last fiscal year, Enomoto was involved in apparel product development at the Planning Department in Osaka. Favorite activities include multi-day treks and packrafting. Their dream is to go hiking with a dog.
The Mission of Outerwear: Making Opposites Attract
Within the company's 'Wickron Cool' functional material series, only the parka-style items feature a water-repellent finish. This decision stems from its clear role as outerwear. While base layers like T-shirts require moisture-wicking and quick-drying properties, the outermost garment—the parka—naturally demands a different set of features."Parkas are typically worn as the outermost layer, or what you'd call outerwear," Enomoto explains. "Many of our customers use the 'Cool Parka' for everything from waterside leisure to paddle sports like kayaking. That's why we gave it a water-repellent treatment, specifically for use around water."
This high performance is backed by the company's impressive in-house testing facilities. The Planning Department at their Osaka headquarters is home to a lab equipped with testing machines on par with external agencies, allowing them to measure specs like air permeability on the fly during development. This ability to meticulously cross-reference the subjective *feeling* of coolness with objective *numerical data* in-house was the key to making these contradictory functions work together in harmony.
The Dilemma: UV Protection in Light Colors vs. Featherlight Weight
UV protection is non-negotiable for summer apparel. The 'Cool Parka' impressively blocks over 90% of all UV-A and UV-B wavelengths on average. However, hitting this number with light-colored fabrics like white is a major technical feat. Lighter shades tend to be more transparent and absorb less heat, which typically results in a lower UV protection rating. While Mont-bell could have simply decided not to produce the lower-performing colorways, they chose a different path. To give customers the cool, refreshing colors they want for summer, the team dedicated themselves to developing and testing fabrics until they met their high standards.
"We believed there was a strong desire for cool-toned clothing, especially in the summer," Enomoto says. "There was a lot of internal support for featuring colors like light blue and pale gray, so we made a conscious decision not to shy away from lighter shades."
This commitment to balancing function and design also shines through in the meticulous fine-tuning of the fabric's weight. The parka achieves a stunningly light average weight of 191g for men and 160g for women. But this wasn't a simple quest for lightness. Making the fabric too thin and light would compromise its durability as outdoor wear and result in a flimsy, less structured feel.
The development process involved exhaustive field testing. Through this trial and error, they discovered the perfect sweet spot—a delicate balance between durability, lightness, and a quality texture that doesn't feel cheap. For more intense activities, they also offer the even thinner 'Wickron Cool Light,' showcasing a detailed product lineup tailored to specific user needs.
The Details That Make All the Difference in Comfort
Small details designed to reduce stress on the skin are another key factor in the parka's superior comfort. It extensively uses flat-seam construction, which minimizes bulky seams to prevent chafing during activity. Furthermore, quality control at the production factories is rigorously managed based on strict internal standards, ensuring a consistently high-quality product supply.
The company has also focused on pattern design to accommodate a wide range of body types. For instance, for those who find the standard fit a bit too snug, Mont-bell offers a roomier 'R (Relax)' size to ensure everyone can experience a comfortable fit.

What's more, its detailed design features that prevent sunburn, such as thumbholes that cover the backs of the hands, have proven popular with a wide range of users.

Development Expertise Forged by the 'Cool Parka'
The expertise in breathability, water repellency, and UV protection gained from the 'Cool Parka' continues to influence the development of new products. A prime example is the new 'UV Tect' series, where every item in every color boasts a UPF 50+ rating.
While fulfilling its primary mission to prevent sunburn, the company's signature philosophy of creating garments that stay breathable and comfortable even in scorching heat is clearly woven into its new products.
By balancing the conflicting properties of breathability and water repellency, the 'Cool Parka' stands as a testament to Mont-bell's approach to craftsmanship: solving problems one by one, guided by feedback from the field.
