Why Do Mont-Bell’s Rambler Glasses Round Fit Japanese Faces So Well?

2026.07.15
The features you need in outdoor sunglasses go beyond just blocking the sun. They must also resist slipping, prevent visual distortion, and protect your eyes from UV rays, wind, sand, and dust. The Rambler Glasses Round, developed by Mont-bell, not only meets all these criteria for outdoor eyewear but also pursues a perfect fit for Japanese facial features. We delve into the story behind their development with Kei Enomoto from Mont-bell's Public Relations Department.

A Round Shape that Blends into the City, But with the Soul of Outdoor Eyewear

The Rambler Glasses Round is a new addition to Mont-bell’s Rambler Glasses series. Positioned as a sibling model, it features more rounded lenses and frames than its predecessors.
“The development was sparked by requests for a rounder model that would be easier for women to wear,” says Enomoto. “However, we ultimately decided not to limit it to a women's model. Instead, we developed it as a versatile option that anyone can choose based on their preference and how they plan to wear them, regardless of gender.”
The hallmark of the Rambler Glasses series is its versatility—you can wear them from the city streets to the great outdoors without needing to switch. This new round model also features a rounded lens shape that subtly tones down the sporty look, making it a stylish addition to any everyday outfit.
At its core, however, it is still a piece of outdoor gear.
“What people expect from Mont-bell sunglasses is protection for their eyes from UV rays and debris in the outdoors. To achieve that, it’s not enough just to have high-performance lenses; a proper fit for Japanese facial features is absolutely essential.”
Sunglasses that don't match your bone structure tend to slip with every movement. This not only leads to visual discomfort and stress but also prevents the glasses from fully performing their primary function: protecting your eyes from UV rays, wind, sand, and dust.

The challenge is that the nose height and head shape of Westerners and Japanese people are different. As a result, when Japanese people wear sunglasses designed for Westerners, they often experience issues like the glasses not sitting properly on the nose, the temples digging into their temples, or the frames slipping during activity.
“Furthermore, even among Japanese and other Asian people, there’s a wide variety in nose height and head shape, as well as differences between genders. At Mont-bell, we use data accumulated over years of development, with our own employees acting as testers to repeatedly refine prototypes and incorporate feedback into the final product.”

Mont-bell's Asian Fit: A Design that Even Considers Pupillary Distance

This philosophy led to the creation of their unique 'Asian Fit' design.
“It’s designed based on the average facial width, nose height, and pupillary distance of Japanese people, ensuring the lenses and frame sit in a natural, comfortable position.”
The key is that it's not just about sitting comfortably on the nose. When the lenses are in the correct position, they can better protect your eyes from UV rays, wind, sand, and dust. Moreover, if the relationship between your pupils and the lenses is correctly aligned, it also helps reduce visual discomfort.
The Asian Fit is more than just a tweak for comfort. It's a fundamental design choice meant to ensure the eyewear's original protective functions perform optimally for Japanese facial structures.

“Of course, no matter how much we tailor the design to Japanese facial features, there will always be individual differences in face width, nose height, and head shape. That’s why we made the nose pads and temples adjustable.”
The nose pad has a two-step adjustment. This allows you to fine-tune how the glasses sit on your nose, helping to stabilize the position of the lenses. Photo: Mont-bell.
The frames and temples are made from a super-elastic nylon resin that is highly resistant to impact and bending. Additionally, the temples contain a core, allowing you to adjust their angle and curve to fit your face perfectly. The benefit is that you can find a sweet spot where they don't squeeze your head too tightly and are less likely to slip, even during movement.

A Proprietary Lens for an Enhanced Fit and Distortion-Free Vision

Another element that contributes to the snug fit is the 6-base curve lens.
"The 6-base curve lenses trace a three-dimensional arc that follows the contours of the face. This shape is designed to block light coming in from the sides and better protect your eyes. A key feature of this model is that it successfully combines a rounded design, perfect for everyday use, with the light-blocking capabilities needed in the field."
A natural field of vision is another of this model’s major strengths.
"They are equipped with Mont-bell's proprietary Real View Lens. They're designed so the optical center of the lens aligns with the pupil's position, and light refraction is minimized by subtly varying the thickness across the lens."
Curved lenses are prone to image shifting and distortion due to light refraction. The brain unconsciously corrects for this discrepancy, which leads to eye and brain fatigue. To combat this, Mont-bell finely adjusts the lens thickness based on its position to reduce refraction. The goal is to create sunglasses that remain comfortable and strain-free, even when worn for long hours.

The combination of the Asian Fit, designed to position the lenses perfectly for Japanese facial features, and the refraction-reducing lens design results in sunglasses that don't just 'stay in place' but are also 'easy on the eyes.'

An Accessible Price Is the Mont-bell Way

The excellent value for money is also hard to ignore. The standard lens model comes equipped with the Asian Fit, Real View Lens, and adjustable temples and nose pads, yet is priced at 6,600 yen. It's classic Mont-bell to offer an accessible price without cutting any essential functions.

The "Rambler Glass Round" lineup also features a polarized lens model that cuts glare by reducing scattered reflections from surfaces like roads, water, and snow. This makes them perfect for waterside or snow activities, and for driving on sunny days. "Rambler Glass Round PL" 8,690 yen (tax incl.). Photo courtesy of Mont-bell.
"For a long time, we have been developing and selling our products under the guiding principle of 'Quality products at reasonable prices, with excellent service.' We avoid unnecessary costs without cutting essential features, pursuing a manufacturing process that allows our customers to buy with confidence and ease."
Functionality to protect your eyes outdoors, a design that fits seamlessly into daily life, a fit tailored for Japanese facial features, a natural field of vision, and an affordable price tag. The "Rambler Glass Round" is the quintessential example of Mont-bell's function-first philosophy, embodying all these qualities in a single piece of eyewear.
