Lightweight & Thin, the All-Purpose New Wear from Montbell, the "EX Light Thermawrap Parka"

2024.11.08
In outdoor brands, synthetic materials (synthetic insulation) are commonly used as filling for cold weather gear alongside down. This season, brands outside the outdoor sector are continuously releasing garments that highlight the functionality of synthetic insulation, and its benefits are becoming widely recognized. The era in which we can simplify "warm = down" is over.

Embracing the unique functionality of synthetic insulation "Exceloft" early on and evolving it further, "Montbell (stylized "mont-bell")" has introduced this fall/winter season a new item that can be widely utilized: the "EX Light Thermawrap Parka," which gets more impressive the more you learn about it. I spoke with Tetsushi Hosako from the Public Relations Department of mont-bell Co., Ltd.
EX Light Thermawrap Parka Men’s: ¥17,050 (tax included); available in green as well as blue-green, light green, and black; sizes available in S, M, L, and XL; average weight 200g; comes with a stuff sack. Women’s version also available.

The Versatility of the Synthetically Insulated "Stretch Exceloft" that Down Cannot Compete With!

While being lightweight and thin, this parka is sufficiently strong and possesses moderate insulation, quick-dry properties, and stretchability. When I tried it on, it was incredibly easy to wear. It uses the evolved version of synthetic insulation, "Stretch Exceloft," which incorporates stretch capabilities.

Many people still have a strong image that "when it's cold, you wear down," yet a significant number are now consulting in stores asking which is better for them, down or synthetic insulation. While both down and synthetic insulation have their pros and cons, the "EX Light Thermawrap Parka" featuring the functional material "Stretch Exceloft" is very comfortable to wear and offers more mobility compared to down, leading many to choose this option.
It fits compactly into the included stuff sack.
There are various types of down, generally light and warm, but when wet, its insulating properties drop significantly, and it takes a long time to dry. If it rains or if you sweat while climbing stairs or hills, you cannot expect it to dry quickly and return to a comfortable fit the same day. In contrast, synthetic insulation is resistant to water and dries quickly.

"Even in winter, when exercising heats you up, sweating can be uncomfortable. The 'EX Light Thermawrap Parka,' with its rapid-drying properties, lightweight and thin materials, is designed to maintain a dry feel even during moderate activity without needing to take it off frequently. The outer and lining fabrics are thin yet strong, water-repellent, and overall resistant to wetness, which are advantages not offered by down.

"'Exceloft' and 'Stretch Exceloft' are lightweight synthetic materials, but the highest quality down is even lighter, albeit at a higher price point. Proper management, like changing layers to prevent chilling from sweat according to activity levels, or pairing with waterproof outerwear in bad weather, can utilize down's lightweight and insulating properties effectively. On the other hand, synthetic insulation provides an affordable balance of lightweight, insulation, and quick-drying properties without needing as much meticulous attention."
Not only the stretchability of the insulation, but also fabrics placed in a diagonal (bias) on parts where stretchability is required, such as shoulders, sides, and back, enhance the natural stretch characteristics of the material.

Lightly Styled as Outerwear for Daily Use and Utilized as Mid-layer in Harsh Environments

Living in the city often means transitioning from heated indoors to the outside air for just a short time before returning to another heated indoor space, making heavy winter gear less essential. Recently, the trend has leaned towards milder winters, leading to the popularity of lightweight down jackets. Choosing synthetic insulation wear that is thin, light, and high-performance is the way to go. It is less likely to overheat even during outdoor activities.

"The 'EX Lite Thermawrap' series introduced this season is a multi-functional piece compared to the previous 'U.L. Thermawrap' and 'Thermawrap' series. It can be worn as an outer layer for city outings, or as a lightweight mid-layer when venturing into winter mountains. Layering it with shells like all-weather jackets enhances insulation, waterproofing, and wind resistance during activities.

"After making the most of it in winter, you can take advantage of its compactness in spring, summer, and autumn by stowing it in your bag. With an average weight of 200g, it won’t be a burden. It becomes a reliable companion for all seasons, especially useful for addressing the morning and evening chills during activities like camping and hiking.”

For instance, consider the popular ascent of Mt. Fuji. It is widely accepted to wear winter wear like down jackets while waiting for the sunrise at high altitudes above 3000m. However, as is well-known, the weather on Fuji can deteriorate quickly, greatly increasing the likelihood of rain. While soaking a down jacket can be disastrous, synthetic insulation can withstand some wetness without significant detriment.

If ultimate lightness is pursued, high-end down with 1000 fill power excels over synthetic insulation. However, if you're carrying minimal gear for an overnight stay in a mountain hut, it may be wise to also consider other benefits like quick-drying properties while choosing the "EX Lite Thermawrap" series for lightweight solutions. This applies not only to Mt. Fuji but also to hiking in unpredictable weather conditions.

Is "Exceloft" or Down the Right Choice for You?

“In our stores, I've noticed an increase in customers asking about whether to choose 'Exceloft' or down, and which might suit them better. There are various types of clothing that use 'Exceloft' and 'Stretch Exceloft,' as well as different options for down, so I believe that if you share your intended use, we can make recommendations that simplify your choice. The 'EX Lite Thermawrap Parka' is versatile and easy to adapt.”

If in doubt, asking the staff at Montbell is the best approach. Beyond parkas, there are also lightweight jackets and vests without hoods available. Once convinced of the benefits of synthetic insulation, you might also want to choose pants and shoes that use "Exceloft" as well, providing comfort at a reasonable price. Sleeping bags are also recommended.
Exceloft Camp Shoes L, 5,390 yen (tax included) Color options include the brown shown in the photo, as well as black, navy, and red in four types. Sizes are available in S (22-24 cm), M (24-26 cm), and L (26-28 cm). Average weight is 149g, includes staff bag, unisex.
Understanding the characteristics of materials enables better differentiation in the use of your cold-weather gear and appropriate handling when used in combination with other items. The options for pairing with fleece or wool also expand. Why not visit your nearest Montbell store to try out the "EX Lite Thermawrap Parka"?
