Design & Comfort Uniquely Combined: Montbell's "Lock-On Sandals" Are Revolutionaries in the Sandal World

2025.04.21
Every year, when spring and summer arrive, the desire to wear flip-flops kicks in. They allow for freedom of toe movement and feel refreshing against bare skin.
However, after walking for a while, feet can get tired or start to hurt. While one might say this is the fate of flip-flops, Montbell’s "Lock-On Sandals" are different.
The soft S-shaped strap holds the entire foot while the heel strap locks the heel in place. The sensation while wearing them is akin to wearing sneakers.
Let's explore the charm of the revolutionary Lock-On Sandals with Montbell's PR representative, Tetsushi Hosako.

The 2 Models that Form the Base of the "Lock-On Sandals"

First, please tell us about the background of the creation of the Lock-On Sandals.
The Lock-On Sandals were released in 2014. They are based on the "Slip-On Sandals," which began sales in 1994.

Unlike the Lock-On Sandals, the thong is shaped like a loop, right?
This model features a thong type that has a strap running between the big toe and the second toe (index toe). A common drawback of typical thong sandals is that they can cause discomfort when walking as you have to grip the strap with your toes.
However, the Slip-On Sandals hold the foot with a loop strap, reducing the need to grip with your toes, making for a more comfortable experience. Additional advantages include less sand getting kicked up and a quieter walking experience.
The thong strap is made from a tubular polyester tape, providing a smooth feel against the skin. This material is carried over to the Lock-On Sandals as well.
How was the distinctive thong of the Lock-On Sandals developed?
Originally, we developed a model called the "Sock-On Sandals."
This was designed in response to requests from users and staff wanting to wear sandals while still wearing socks, leading to the adoption of an S-shaped thong.

The S-shaped thong that does not interfere with socks securely holds the foot, making it easy to step in and push off, allowing for stable walking. The padded thong is flexible and excellent in fit, adapting freely to the shape of the foot.
Moreover, there’s no need to grip the thong with your toes, making long walks less tiring on your feet.
The Lock-On Sandals are an evolved model of the Sock-On Sandals, incorporating a "back strap."

Increased Mobility with the Addition of a Back Strap

How does adding the back strap change things?
By securing (locking on) the heel with the back strap, the connection between the foot and the sole is enhanced, and mobility is further improved.
The strap includes a hook-and-loop fastener, allowing for fine adjustments to fit the foot size.
While the Slip-On Sandals, Sock-On Sandals, and Lock-On Sandals differ in thong shape, presence of a back strap, and weight, they share common materials.
How is the fit and cushioning for the sole?
The footbed is made of shock-absorbing E.V.A. foam and is shaped to fit the contours of the foot.
It features a dimpled surface that creates small indentations, providing grip and preventing moisture buildup.
The outsole is made from a rubber material that offers excellent grip and incorporates a pattern for effective water drainage.
I tried them on, and they are incredibly lightweight.
The M size Lock-On Sandals weigh only 137g per foot, making them compact and great to bring along for hiking or camping, perfect for relaxing at a tent or mountain lodge or during water activities.

An Increasing Number of Users Wearing Them in the City

Recently, I've been seeing them more often in urban settings.
Originally designed as outdoor sandals, their comfort and aesthetic appeal have attracted many users who wear them for casual outings.
It's also common to see people enjoying coordinated outfits with socks, in addition to wearing them barefoot.
It has garnered attention as a fashion item, and at BEAMS, they release limited edition models in exclusive colors every year.
What kind of product is the Lock-On Sandal for Montbell?
The development concept that unifies all products is "Light & Fast" and "Function is Beauty."
"Light & Fast" aims to connect lightweight and compact design with swift and safe actions, while "Function is Beauty" achieves inherent beauty by eliminating waste and pursuing functionality to its limits.
The Lock-On Sandal is one such product that embodies this concept.
Since its release in 2014, they have continued to update details such as materials, fit, and the shape of the thong based on user feedback.
The revolutionary sandal continues to advance towards greater heights.
