Authentic Shell Jacket Under 10,000 Yen: The Astonishing Functionality of Montbell’s Lightest-Ever "Ultra Light Shell Parka"
"Lightness" is one of the most crucial features for mountaineering apparel and gear.
The lighter the item, the more you can reduce your base weight (the total weight of your backpack at the start of your hike, excluding consumables), and it also decreases the strain on your body. That’s why professional mountaineers are always searching for wearables and gear that are even a gram lighter.
Shell jackets, which are typically on the heavier side, have seen countless brands experiment and strive for lighter designs.
Amidst the competition, the "mont-bell" "Ultra Light Shell Parka"—which debuted in 2020—truly stands out.
It weighs just 136g on average. For context, that’s about the same as a single D-cell battery, and even lighter than your typical banana. Yet, it boasts stretchability for free movement and high-performing features like moisture absorption and quick-drying abilities. Best of all, it comes at a remarkable price: just 9,900 yen (tax included).
Let’s uncover the secrets behind Montbell’s lightest ever soft shell with PR representative Tetsushi Hosako.

Based on a Now-Discontinued Lightweight Shell
How did the "Ultra Light Shell Parka" come to be?"The base for this parka was the Ultra Light Shell Jacket, which launched in 2016 but has now been discontinued.
"Within Montbell’s soft shell category, there’s a classic series called the Light Shell. In this series, shells feature a windproof nylon outer fabric with a mesh lining to boost insulation and breathability."

The Ultra Light Shell Jacket inherited all the strengths of the Light Shell series, while pushing the boundaries of lightweight construction even further.

"The Ultra Light Shell Jacket was a popular model, but we received many requests from both customers and staff to add a hood. That’s why we decided to create a hooded version, and in the process, developed the even more supple Ultra Light Shell Parka."
The Secret Behind Its Light Weight: Ultra-Fine Yarn Ripstop Nylon

Weighing in at only 136g, this outstanding lightness is all thanks to its material.
"The outer fabric is made from Ballistic Airlight nylon ripstop. This material is densely woven from ultra-fine 12-denier nylon fibers using advanced technology, which not only results in extreme lightness but also makes the jacket compact and highly durable."
The jacket’s functionality shines as well: the mesh lining efficiently lets moisture escape, keeping you dry inside. Thanks to its water-repellent finish, it shrugs off light rain with ease.

Slip your arms through the sleeves and you’re immediately struck not just by the lightness, but how easily you can move.
"We’ve added stretch to the back and sleeves. By harnessing the natural diagonal stretch of the fabric, we’ve intentionally cut the fibers on the bias."

The lining feels pleasant against bare skin, too.
"The liner is a polyester mesh that absorbs moisture and dries quickly. It wicks sweat away swiftly and feels smooth to wear. For high-activity situations, there are large ventilation openings under the arms to help expel heat efficiently."
A Hood Packed With Features Fit for the Mountains

The standout feature is the meticulously designed hood.
"The face opening and depth can be adjusted with the drawcord, and the height with Velcro at the back—this improves fit and prevents the hood from flapping on windy days. There’s even a brim with an inserted core, ensuring you maintain visibility in stormy weather."
The front zipper is designed so it won’t chafe or rub against your chin when fully closed, maximizing comfort.

One of the standout features of Montbell’s soft shell is its unique packable design. You can fold it down compactly and store it in the left chest pocket, so there’s no risk of losing a separate storage bag.
If I were to point out a weak point of this shell, it would be that there’s only one pocket located on the left chest. This is a deliberate choice to fully harness the material’s light weight.
"If you’re concerned about dirt, you can wash it in the washing machine using a mild detergent for clothing. Since the fabric is thin, we recommend putting it in a laundry net when washing."
Not Just for the Outdoors: Great as an Everyday Jacket or Sportswear
This item is incredibly versatile—it’s useful as an insulated jacket for high-altitude summers, or as a mid-layer in winter. No matter the season, you’ll find it handy. For city wear, you can throw it on like a shirt, making it ideal as a lightweight jacket during warmer months.
"It’s designed for a wide range of outdoor activities such as hiking, trail running, and climbing, but many people also use it for running.
"It’s lightweight, easy to move in, and doesn’t trap sweat, so you stay comfortable as you exercise. When it gets warm, you can easily take it off and store it compactly."
Priced at 9,900 yen (tax included), it’s another example of Montbell’s commitment to cost performance. As with their other products, Montbell keeps prices affordable by handling every step from planning and development to production and distribution in-house.

"We offer nine series of soft shells, including the Crag Parka Jacket and Cross Runner Jacket, but this model is the lightest of them all.
"Light & Fast is the shared concept behind all Montbell products. Our goal is to make things as light and compact as possible, allowing you to move swiftly and safely.
"Given how important weight reduction is, I believe a soft shell named 'Ultra Light' has an ongoing duty to keep evolving.
"We’ll continue to listen to customer feedback and pursue further weight reduction through materials development and field testing."
The "Ultra Light Shell Parka" truly embodies Montbell’s relentless pursuit of Light & Fast innovation.
