A Step Beyond Lightweight: How the "Versalite Pack 20" Embodies Montbell's Design Philosophy

2026.01.27
Making your gear lighter directly translates to more freedom on the trail. Montbell's "Versalite Pack" has always tackled the challenge of "lightweight gear" in hiking head-on.
The goal has always been a pack that feels incredibly light the moment you put it on, yet remains stable and comfortable throughout your adventure. Having evolved through meticulous refinement of materials and construction, this backpack is one of the best examples of Montbell’s long-held philosophies: "Function is Beauty" and "Light & Fast."
In this article, we'll focus on the "Versalite Pack 20," the most popular 20L model in the series. Joined by PR representative Tetsushi Hosako, we'll dive into its specifications and the story behind its development.

After gaining experience as a retail staff member, he moved to the public relations department to work in PR. His favorite activities are hiking and climbing, and he often spends his days off rock climbing.

A Name That Says It All: The Goal of Combining Versatility and Lightness

"The Versalite Pack was introduced in 1992. 'Versalite' is a portmanteau of 'Versatile' and 'Light.' It's not just about being lightweight; it also has the versatility for a wide range of activities and uses. That's the concept embedded in its name."

20L: The Optimal Capacity for a Day-Hike Backpack

"For day hikes, lightweight gear is a constant pursuit. Your time on the trail is limited, so you need to pare down your equipment to the bare essentials. At the same time, you have to leave room for items to handle changes in weather or activity level."
For a day hike, a 20L capacity is arguably the most practical size. It can hold all the essential gear—like rainwear, an insulating layer, water, and snacks—without leaving too much extra space.
As a result, it's easier to keep the pack's overall weight down, reducing stress while you're on the move. There's a clear reason why "20L" is the magic number.
"We also designed the 20L pack with its use as a summit pack in mind. On multi-day treks or trips with a base camp, it functions as a secondary pack you carry separately from your main one."

A Featherlight 220g: Setting It Apart from a Typical Backpack

A typical 20L hiking backpack weighs around 700g. For a model with features that enhance comfort, like padded shoulder straps and a frame, this isn't considered heavy.
In contrast, the Versalite Pack 20L weighs a mere 220g. That's over 500g lighter than a standard pack in the same capacity class. At 220g, it weighs about the same as a single juice box. When you put it on empty, it feels like you're wearing almost nothing at all.
"In recent years, many ultralight-focused backpacks have entered the market. However, for a pack to be used for hiking, balance when worn and stability on the move are essential. With the Versalite Pack 20, we aimed to balance weight reduction with practicality, all while designing it first and foremost as a true hiking backpack."
This 20L model is the result of a meticulous process: keeping only the essential features and stripping away everything else.

Uncompromising Durability: The Choice of Ballistic Nylon

When balancing weight reduction and practicality, fabric selection is a crucial first step. The pack's body is made from Montbell's proprietary 30-denier Ballistic nylon ripstop.
"We can't sacrifice strength for the sake of lightness. That's why we chose Ballistic nylon, a material that offers both durability and low weight. The nylon fibers are stretched during production, which significantly increases their tear strength compared to standard nylon."

The bottom of the pack, which takes the most abuse, is made from 100-denier ripstop nylon.
"The bottom often gets placed on the ground or scraped against rocks and dirt," he explains. "Instead of using heavy fabric for the whole pack, we balanced lightweight performance with durability by reinforcing only the areas that need it."
To further slash weight, this model was designed to be frameless.
"To make it even lighter, we did away with the back padding. Instead, we ensured a stable carry with a chest support that keeps the pack in place and a waist belt that prevents the load from concentrating on your shoulders."
The shoulder harness is shaped to contour naturally to your shoulders. It achieves a balance between being lightweight and providing a snug fit by optimizing contact points with the body, rather than relying on excessive padding.
When you actually put it on, the pack hugs your body, minimizing any swaying as you walk. Since it's frameless, the backpack moves naturally with you, never getting in the way whether you're hiking, climbing, or descending. The lightness directly translates into a feeling of effortless movement.
The number and placement of side pockets and straps are also minimal, designed with mountaineering in mind. This design helps prevent snagging and won't interfere with your movements. The "design by subtraction" philosophy is meticulously applied here as well.

Portability as a Summit Pack for Multi-Day Hikes

The key to this pack's versatility is its packable design, which lets it shrink to a surprisingly compact size.
"When not in use, the main body can be stowed inside the top lid. We designed it to be as compact as possible, envisioning it being carried as a summit pack on multi-day treks or as a secondary bag while traveling."

The approach to storage is also meticulously simple.
"What’s most important is being able to access your gear smoothly. That’s why we kept pockets and dividers to a minimum. Storing frequently used items in the top lid and heavier gear closer to your body enhances stability when you’re carrying the pack."

Lightness Isn't the Goal—It's All About Freedom of Movement

Every aspect, from the materials and construction to the details and storage, is engineered to ensure nothing hinders your movement.
"Reducing weight isn't the goal; it's simply a means to achieve greater freedom of movement."
As Takarasako says, Montbell's "Light & Fast" philosophy isn't just a race to be the lightest. It’s about deeply considering what to keep and what to cut in order to move freely in the field. The Versalite Pack 20 provides a clear and incredibly straightforward answer to that question.
