Gear to Shield Your Arms From UV Rays: The Story Behind Montbell's 'WIC.UV Tect Arm Covers'

2026.05.15
When it comes to UV protection in the great outdoors, the default solution is often just to 'cover your skin.' But that alone doesn't guarantee comfort. In summer, heat gets trapped, and mobility is compromised.
That's why Montbell came up with a solution: the 'WIC.UV Tect Arm Covers.' They re-envisioned UV protection as gear for adapting to the environment. We'll delve into the design of this product, born from that very idea, with Hirotaka Nagai from Montbell's Public Relations department.

Shielding the Arms, Which Are Prone to Sun Exposure

Montbell has been offering UV protection arm covers since 2009. To understand this item, it's crucial to ask: why do we need to cover our arms and hands in the first place?
Of all body parts, the arms are most likely to be exposed during activities and are highly susceptible to the effects of direct sunlight. The forearms, in particular, are continuously exposed to the sun, which can raise their surface temperature, leading to a feeling of increased heat and fatigue. Furthermore, as sweating increases in an attempt to lower body temperature, the combined factors of UV rays, heat, and sweat can amplify feelings of discomfort and exhaustion.
'Today's arm covers are expected to do more than just reduce forearm exposure. They need to block UV rays while releasing heat and wicking away sweat.'
In the mountains, UV intensity is said to increase by about 10% for every 1,000-meter rise in elevation. When you're out in the field in a short-sleeved shirt, arm covers are essential gear. Photo courtesy of Montbell.
Their role extends beyond just preventing sunburn. They function as gear to maintain your body's condition by suppressing temperature rise from direct sunlight and reducing discomfort from sweating.
Especially during midsummer outdoor activities, a dilemma arises: long sleeves are too hot, but short sleeves increase exposure. This is where arm covers come in. Since they can be put on or taken off as needed, they allow for temperature regulation that adapts to the environment and your level of exertion.
In other words, arm covers can be described as a 'variable layer' that controls body exposure according to the situation. It's these functional characteristics that explain why their use has expanded from outdoor adventures to everyday life.

Developed Around the Concept of 'Comfortable Activity'

Against this backdrop, Montbell launched the 'WIC.UV Tect Arm Covers' for the Spring/Summer 2024 season.
'The recent heatwaves are a major factor behind their development. While exposure to strong UV rays is increasing, rising temperatures and humidity make it difficult to stay comfortable with traditional “just cover up” methods. We use a material that not only effectively blocks UV rays but also allows for comfortable movement during strenuous outdoor activities.'
The key to this design is the new material, 'Wickron UV Tect.'
'It's a material developed by Montbell that boasts a high UV protection factor and quick-drying properties. It protects the skin from UV rays while rapidly absorbing and diffusing sweat to keep you dry.'

It has the highest UV protection rating of UPF 50+. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is a rating that indicates how well a garment blocks UV radiation. A rating of 50+ means it's said to delay sunburn by more than 50 times compared to wearing nothing at all.
Wickron UV Tect is a high-performance material offering top-tier UV protection (UPF 50+), excellent moisture-wicking, quick-drying properties, and breathability. Starting this season, Montbell is releasing a variety of apparel using this material. Photo courtesy of Montbell.
It also has excellent breathability, reducing that stuffy feeling by allowing heat to escape. Additionally, it features antibacterial and anti-odor properties, providing the welcome benefit of staying fresh even after long hours of wear.
'UV protection and comfort are often difficult to balance, but this material achieves both.'
Odor resistance is another key feature of this material, preventing unwanted smells even during extended activities. Photo: Montbell
The Wickron UV-Tect material itself is crafted from 100% polyester. Polyester is naturally moisture-wicking, so it dries quickly when you sweat, keeping your skin feeling dry. Unlike cotton, which absorbs moisture and becomes heavy, these sleeves remain comfortable even after hours of wear.
Additionally, the fibers are highly stable, which helps maintain the UV-blocking performance over the long haul. Its superior durability also makes it well-suited for repeated use in outdoor settings.

Functional Details Hidden Within a Simple Design

When you actually put them on, the design appears straightforward, but Montbell’s signature touch shines through in the thoughtful engineering of every detail.
An elastic adjuster is located on the upper arm. A simple pull is all it takes to adjust the fit, accommodating various arm sizes. It’s designed with enough give to avoid feeling restrictive.
The thumbhole is another key feature. It prevents the sleeve from slipping down your wrist while providing solid coverage for the back of your hand.
You can't miss the "Spiral Slant-Tec Cuff" at the wrist. This patented Montbell design features a diagonal seam that doesn't impede stretch, delivering a comfortable fit with minimal constriction.

Weighing in at an average of just 41g (for the men's version), they are exceptionally lightweight and portable. The design is based on the idea of putting them on when you need them and taking them off when you don't.
While originally intended for high-exertion outdoor activities like hiking, they are increasingly being adopted for everyday use. The growing number of male fans is a testament to their widening appeal.
Montbell's "WIC. UV-Tect Arm Covers" are a product that redefines the arm cover category in the face of today's scorching summer heat.
How do you block UV rays while ensuring all-day comfort? By solving this challenge, this item has evolved from a simple sun-protection tool into a piece of essential "gear" for adapting to harsh environments.
