Why Does It Feel "Better Than New"? — Morimoto Cleaning Tackles the Science of Sleeping Bag "Function Restoration"

2026.08.21
Nationally recognized for its high-end down garment maintenance, Morimoto Cleaning has applied its expertise to launch a new service specializing in outdoor sleeping bag care.
Why did the company venture into caring for gear built for harsh environments—a far cry from everyday fashion? Behind this move lies the story of a man who transformed his father's legacy through a fresh lens, turning a personal passion into a thriving business.
We spoke with Takeshi Morimoto of Morimoto Cleaning to learn more about the journey behind this bold new venture.

From "Kindness" to "Business": Pivoting to High-End Brand Specialization

Founded in 1973, Morimoto Cleaning built its reputation as a trusted, community-focused dry cleaner.
A beloved local cleaner built hand-in-hand with the community
The founder, Morimoto's father, was a craftsman at heart. He cleaned luxury designer items at standard rates and even tackled stain removal at no extra charge.
Although Takeshi initially worked at a tech firm, he eventually returned to the family business and witnessed his father's dedication firsthand.
"My father treated luxury items the same as everyday clothes, pouring his heart into every garment without charging extra for stain removal. That generosity was admirable, but I wanted to build a viable business around those skills. That's when I decided to take over."
By pivoting to focus on high-end luxury brands and introducing digital marketing, Morimoto Cleaning transformed into a business attracting orders from across the country.

An Outdoor Enthusiast Discovers the Potential of Sleeping Bag Restoration

The next application for the skills honed in luxury brand care was sleeping bags. As an avid mountaineer and camper who regularly maintained high-performance outdoor gear, Morimoto had refined cleaning techniques tailored to high-tech fabrics.
Using specialized detergents for each item to achieve a premium finish
Around that time, an acquaintance reached out with a dilemma: "I tried washing my sleeping bag at home, and it turned into a total disaster."
"I offered to wash it for them, and when it was done, they were thrilled—saying it was so fluffy it barely fit back in its storage bag. That was the moment I knew: this is a service people genuinely need."
Campers want to use their high-end sleeping bags for years, but few know how to care for them properly. Morimoto realized his company's expertise could solve that exact problem.

Constant Oversight: The Craftsmanship Restoring Sleeping Bags to Life

Cleaning a sleeping bag is even trickier than cleaning a down jacket. In addition to their large size, sleeping bags feature complex "baffle structures" designed to keep down evenly distributed. Aggressive washing can easily damage the stitching or down feathers.
The process begins with careful hand-washing of areas prone to body oils, like around the collar, using a specialized detergent. The sleeping bag is then placed in a large mesh bag, washed in warm water (around 35°C / 95°F) for 5 to 8 minutes, and rinsed twice. To maintain extreme quality control, a maximum of two items are processed at a time.
Their complex construction requires years of experience and specialized detergents
"Because sleeping bags are highly water-repellent, they inflate rapidly during washing. Trapped water is hard to drain, and suds build up easily. Strong rotation or centrifugal force can even tear the seams. For certain items, we have to stand by and monitor them constantly."
Drying demands the most patience. After thorough water extraction, the sleeping bag is air-dried for 4 to 5 days and flipped every half day to ensure the interior dries completely. Finally, a few minutes in a high-temperature dryer restores the down's original, cloud-like loft.
Specialized detergents and painstaking drying restore loft while giving the fabric a softer, richer feel

A Texture Surpassing Brand-New Quality and a Commitment to the Environment

At Morimoto Cleaning, the team pursues a texture superior to brand-new items by combining a dedicated down detergent from a professional chemical manufacturer with their proprietary "re-fatting process."
Down maintains its lightness and warmth (fill power) thanks to natural oils. However, repeated washing strips away essential oils, leaving feathers dry and brittle. The re-fatting process replenishes appropriate lipids to restore the feathers' natural elasticity, reviving their ability to create "dead air" (a layer of trapped air that retains heat).
Morimoto himself has experienced the difference brought by this technology.
"When I slept in my sleeping bag, it felt smoother and more comfortable than when I first bought it. It's just a personal feeling, but I thought, 'This feels wonderfully cozy.'"
In addition to adding value that exceeds new items, environmental consideration is strictly maintained—precisely because outdoor gear is used in nature. For their standard water-repellent treatment, they adopted a water repellent free of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which raise environmental and ecological concerns.
However, PFAS-free repellents face challenges regarding initial water repellency and abrasion resistance compared to traditional fluorine-based ones. To solve this, the company developed a proprietary "fixing process" that combines precise application by skilled craftsmen with thermal management using steam irons.
For a perfect finish, the final step of heat treatment is essential
By allowing water-repellent components to penetrate deep into the fibers and aligning and setting the water-repellent groups at a molecular level with heat, they achieve high-density, highly durable water repellency capable of withstanding severe condensation and wet snow—all while remaining PFAS-free.
To objectively demonstrate this effect, they are also working to quantify loft values (fill height). However, because individual differences and measurement conditions have a major impact, they are currently working to establish a more accurate evaluation method while continuing to value user feedback.

Beyond Functional Restoration

Morimoto Cleaning's efforts go beyond sleeping bags. Morimoto is mapping out his next vision, including developing and selling original detergents for down products, delicate wear, and martial arts uniforms (dogi), as well as expanding into down duvet cleaning and storage, plus motorcycle gear maintenance.
Along with expanding their original detergent lineup, they also sell products specialized for sneakers, which are in high demand
The dry cleaning shop inherited from his father has grown into a nationwide business by specializing in luxury brands and leveraging web channels. As personal passion merges with master craftsmanship, its possibilities continue to broaden.
Cherishing high-quality goods for years through proper care—Morimoto Cleaning's journey to convey this value through handcrafted expertise has only just begun.
