Scorching summers are getting longer every year, and it’s become the new normal... Protecting ourselves from the intense sun and sweltering heat is now a must for everyone. As a result, companies have flooded the market with all sorts of heat-busting gear. Now, Muji has finally joined the scene, releasing its 'Heat-Blocking Folding Sun Umbrella.'
So, what sets this highly anticipated sun umbrella apart? We sat down with Takafumi Matsuki and Miho Haigo from Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. to get the inside scoop on its development and the user-centric passion poured into its design.

Over Two Years in Development, Balancing Lightness and Usability

With a market full of heat-protection gear, Muji's development concept was "just the right amount of user-friendliness." They meticulously tested every aspect from every angle. What Muji prioritized wasn't just high specs, but a design that could be effortlessly integrated into daily life.
"Functionality is a given these days. But no matter how high-tech an item is, if it's a hassle to use, people just won't use it. Dealing with the heat is becoming more and more crucial in our daily routines. So, we made portability a top priority, ensuring it's a practical tool for everyday situations like grocery runs, commuting, or heading to school."

To make it portable, the top priority was making it lightweight.
"Sun umbrellas are for daytime use when the sun is out. That means once the sun goes down, it gets tossed in a bag and can feel like a heavy burden. That's precisely why we felt that being lightweight and portable was crucial."
Typically, sun umbrellas are coated on the underside to boost their heat- and light-blocking properties. While this is essential for beating the heat, it also inevitably adds weight to the fabric.
"So we revisited our coating methods and the materials for the frame. In the end, we managed to achieve a weight of under 170g for a 50cm rib size, all while maintaining a UPF of 50+, a UV protection rate of over 90%, and a light-blocking rate of over 99%."
Lighter umbrellas are easier to carry, but they often sacrifice durability. Many people have probably experienced an umbrella getting flipped inside out by a gust of wind or its ribs snapping.
The storage pouch comes with a handle, so you can hang it from your bag.
"Being lightweight is key, but for an umbrella, being durable is even more critical. An umbrella is made up of many different components. We've paid close attention to every single detail to ensure both safety and durability, like using robust materials for high-stress areas and carefully designing the joint depth and inner diameter to prevent the handle from breaking."
The ribs are made from glass fiber reinforced plastic (fiberglass), which bends flexibly and resists breaking in the wind. This combination delivers both easy handling and impressive durability.
This focus on durability isn't just about safety. As mentioned, an umbrella is a mix of materials like fabric and metal. In Japan, this makes sorting and recycling them for disposal a major challenge. Consequently, a vast number of discarded umbrellas end up in landfills.
"When you think about the environment, it's vital that our products are built to last and can be used for a long time. That's a core principle behind Muji's approach to making umbrellas."
The spherical handle was designed to be compact for easy storage.

A Price and Color Palette Perfect for Coordinating with Any Outfit

The obsession with user-friendliness even extends to the strap for fastening the umbrella.
"I'm sure many people have had that annoying experience where you fold up your umbrella, only to find the strap is on the wrong side. We all seem to have an unconscious habit of rolling it either clockwise or counter-clockwise. It's a minor detail, but it can be surprisingly frustrating. That's why Muji umbrellas feature a strap that can be fastened from either direction."
The clasp, designed to fasten from either direction, is a standard feature on all MUJI umbrellas.
To ensure the umbrella's longevity, the biggest hurdle was the fabric. The newly released model comes in four colors: black, navy, ivory, and light blue. However, as of last year, the lighter shades couldn't meet the company's internal standards.
'Sun umbrellas are, by nature, exposed to sunlight for extended periods. Lighter colors are particularly susceptible to fading from sun exposure, and at first, they failed to meet our standards. It took countless tests and color adjustments, but this year we finally achieved a quality level ready for release.'
We could have released a version with only dark colors last year, but there's a reason we were so committed to offering a four-color lineup.

'We wanted our customers to experience the fun of picking a color that suits their mood or simply owning one in their favorite shade, much like choosing an outfit. We also considered families, wanting each member to be able to pick their own color. That's why we were determined to set the price at 1,990 yen, making it easier for people to buy more than one.'
Although it was only recently released, the "Heat-Blocking Folding Sun Umbrella" has already been well-received.
'Even though it just launched, we believe products that help people cope with intense heat will become increasingly essential. We're considering various potential updates, like adding more color variations or increasing the size, and we plan to continue focusing on developing heat-shielding products while listening to customer feedback.'
This summer is sure to be another scorcher. The role of a sun umbrella is shifting; it's becoming a piece of 'gear' for protecting ourselves in daily life. MUJI's "Heat-Blocking Folding Sun Umbrella" is a practical choice that responds to this shift.
