While inner down jackets are commonplace now, back when this vest first launched, the market was dominated by outdoor and sports brands, with few options designed for everyday wear.
"At the time, most fabrics were slippery and shiny, which I felt made them difficult to work into a daily wardrobe. So, while drawing inspiration from outdoor gear, we set out to create something lightweight, compact, and easy to incorporate into everyday outfits," says Kuroda.

It featured a matte texture, a lineup of basic colors, and achieved a balance of loft and lightness thanks to high-quality 750-fill-power down. The packable design, allowing it to be stored compactly, drew attention as a new and unprecedented type of cold-weather gear.
"It's incredibly convenient to just toss in your bag during the change of seasons when mornings and evenings are chilly, or when you're traveling for work or pleasure," Kuroda explains.
Just Stuff It in the Pocket: A New Design Born from Customer Feedback
Typically, packable items are stored in a separate pouch. However, customer feedback revealed common complaints like, "It's a hassle to fold," and, "I always lose the pouch." In response, Muji completely revamped the packable design in 2023.
"We redesigned it so you can just stuff it into the pocket, and it will pack down compactly," says Okada.
By aligning the seam of the body with the pocket slit, the design achieves a beautiful fusion of form and function, making the pocket virtually invisible when the vest is worn.

"If the pocket is too big, it defeats the purpose of being packable, but if it's too small, it becomes difficult to stuff. We went through countless rounds of testing to find that sweet spot: a size that's small but still easy to pack. As a result, we've received positive feedback, with customers saying, 'It's much easier to pack now.' Another key feature is that you can stow it in either the left or right pocket," says Okada.
Creating Value Beyond Its Price Tag with a New 3-Layer Structure
Above all, the product's greatest strength is undoubtedly its price. Despite a price adjustment this season due to the rising cost of raw materials like down, it maintains an affordable price of ¥4,990 (tax included)."Many customers seem to recognize its excellent cost performance, often buying it in multiple colors. The women's collection comes in five colors, including basic shades plus 'smoky pink,' a rare color for inner down," Okada notes.

The men's line, meanwhile, is available in four basic colors. New colors are introduced each year, with this season's key addition being light silver gray.
Furthermore, to ensure customers feel they're getting more value than the price increase suggests, the vest has been updated in terms of both quality and function.
"Until last year, the vest had a two-layer structure with visible stitching. This season, we switched to a 'three-layer structure' by adding another layer of fabric on top. This helps prevent down from poking through the seams and offers better protection against cold wind. We've received a lot of feedback in our stores, with customers saying things like, 'I was worried it looked too thin, but it's surprisingly warm when you put it on,'" says Okada.
The outer fabric was co-developed with a supplier to block wind while remaining light and soft. Thanks to this proprietary material, the vest weighs only about 130g, even with its three-layer construction.
"We originally designed the vest to be compact to avoid a bulky look when layering. But because the three-layer structure helps control the fabric's loft, we're seeing more people wear it under suits," Kuroda adds.

Additionally, the faint horizontal lines you can see on the lining are made of conductive thread, which helps suppress static electricity. The vest also uses eco-friendly recycled nylon. Muji has continuously refined the design, incorporating daily feedback from users and staying current with modern demands, all while keeping the price accessible. This dedication is undoubtedly one of the secrets to its long-running success.
"Recently, many people are wearing it as a standalone outer layer in the fall and early winter, enjoying it as a layering piece in the dead of winter, or even using it at home to save on heating bills.
It's truly wonderful to see customers enjoying the vest in more ways than we ever imagined, adapting it to different seasons and occasions. We also see many people buying it as a gift. We've even received feedback like, 'I gave one to my mother, and she was delighted!'" says Okada.
The 'Lightweight Down Packable Collarless Vest' is light, warm, compact, and blends seamlessly with any outfit. The reason it has been a beloved staple for nine long years is its ability to maintain this universal appeal while continuously evolving to meet the needs of the times.
Going forward, the 'Lightweight Down Packable Collarless Vest' will undoubtedly continue to be a go-to piece, subtly bringing warmth to our daily lives. Before the cold truly sets in, you should definitely get your hands on one. By the time winter rolls around, you’ll probably be back to buy another.
