NANGA’s Flame-Retardant Down Goes 3-in-1! Unpacking the Maximum Versatility of the HINOC DOWN 3-IN-1 JACKET

2025.12.03
So resistant to holes it can shrug off flying embers—NANGA's flame-retardant outerwear, a long-time champion of campfire sessions, has evolved this fall into a 3-in-1 design.
The "HINOC DOWN 3 IN 1 JACKET" pairs an outer shell made from the flame-retardant HINOC material with an inner jacket packed with ultra-water-repellent down. The result is an all-purpose jacket perfect for everything from camping adventures to city streets.
We sat down with Sou Yonezawa from the Sales Planning Division at NANGA Inc. to uncover the true potential of this single piece, which masterfully blends the security you need around a fire with the lightweight comfort essential for everyday wear.

PROFILE

Sou Yonezawa

Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1990, Sou Yonezawa joined NANGA Inc. straight out of university in 2013. He took on the public relations role in 2018 and, by 2023, became the PR Lead for the Sales Planning Division. His hobby is camping, which doubles as hands-on product testing.

HINOC: A Proprietary Fabric Balancing Flame Retardancy and Comfort

To fully appreciate this down jacket's performance, you first need to understand its core material: HINOC.
“It’s a proprietary blend of aramid fibers and polyester developed in-house at NANGA. It’s highly flame-retardant, making it resistant to flying embers and reducing the risk of holes that can ruin a jacket during a campfire. Aramid fibers are typically quite stiff, but thanks to a special weaving technique, HINOC minimizes that rigidity, resulting in a distinctively soft, cotton-like feel.”
Despite using flame-retardant aramid fibers, the material has a cotton-like texture—another key feature of HINOC.

The All-Season Outerwear: An 'Outer Shell + Inner Down' System

Since launching its first outerwear with this flame-retardant material back in 2015, NANGA has continuously and independently evolved the series.
“HINOC is also durable and resistant to water and stains, which makes it great not just for the outdoors but also for everyday wear. As a result, we’ve been hearing a growing chorus of customers saying, ‘I want to wear this in the city.’”
The development was also fueled by the fact that many users were already layering inner down jackets under their HINOC outerwear. That sparked the idea for a 3-in-1 design, combining both the shell and the liner into one complete package.
“We redesigned it as the HINOC DOWN 3-IN-1 JACKET, which pairs a HINOC outer shell with an inner jacket filled with UDD DX (Ultra Dry Down). This creates a versatile piece of outerwear you can wear from the first chill of autumn right up to the edge of deep winter.”

An Outer Shell Packed with Practical, Gear-Inspired Details

The jacket features a minimalist, mountain parka-style design that looks right at home in the city. Even the embroidered chest logo is tone-on-tone with the body, giving it a refined finish that avoids the rugged look typical of flame-retardant outerwear.
Large-capacity pockets designed to hold a variety of camping gear.
The front features a dual-layer zip and storm flap closure, while the hood is adjustable via a drawcord.
Since the outer shell is designed for camping, it’s packed with clever features to boost its practicality.
“When you zip the front all the way up, the structured stand-up collar covers the lower half of your face to shield you from cold wind and rain. On each side of the torso, we’ve included dual-layer pockets: a high-capacity pocket for storing your gloves or smartphone, layered over a hand-warmer pocket.”
“The zipper pulls are intentionally long, making them easy to grip and operate even when you’re wearing gloves.”
The inner down is also equipped with large pockets. The front features snap buttons for easy wear and removal.

Solving Down Wear's Biggest Weakness: Water

The inner down jacket, meanwhile, sports a simple, collarless design. Its stylish look comes from the combination of a high-density ripstop nylon and the matte texture created by weaving with 12-denier full-dull yarn.
The understated, matte texture comes from the use of full-dull yarn, which has light-diffusing particles integrated into the fibers.
NANGA's signature attention to detail is also evident in the insulation. The inner down is filled with the brand's proprietary UDD DX.
"UDD DX is an ultra-water-repellent down, achieved by applying a water-repellent coating to each individual feather. Down is naturally vulnerable to water; when it gets wet, it loses its loft, and its ability to retain heat plummets. However, UDD DX effectively repels moisture, allowing it to maintain its loft and keep you warm for extended periods, even when exposed to condensation, light rain, or sweat."
This performance difference is particularly noticeable in camping environments with fluctuating temperatures and high humidity. The insulation resists losing its effectiveness even against morning dew or steam from cooking.
Connecting the outer shell and the inner down is simple. The inside of the outer shell's neck is fitted with a tag that has a snap button.
"You can connect the inner down using the dedicated zipper inside the outer shell and the snap button at the neck. Plus, this model is designed for each piece to be worn on its own, giving you three ways to wear it: the outer shell by itself, the inner down by itself, or both together as a set."
This versatility extends its wearability across the seasons. Wear the pieces individually in the spring and fall, and then combine them for winter. Both layers are lightweight and flexible, creating an all-purpose outerwear that's just as comfortable for city life as it is for hiking and camping.
The outer shell features an oversized stand-up collar and flap pockets that add a stylish accent to any outfit. The inner down is a collarless design that can be worn casually like a cardigan.

A New Standard in Flame-Retardant Outerwear, Redefined with Versatility

"Previously, flame-retardant outerwear was generally geared more toward camping. But with this 3-in-1 design, it has become a piece that bridges the gap between the outdoors and everyday life. I believe it's a landmark jacket that elevates the standard for flame-retardant outerwear to the next level."
If you mainly wear it in the city, you might not always need 100% of its outdoor-ready specs. Nevertheless, the flame-retardant properties of the HINOC fabric and the moisture resistance of the UDD DX serve as a solid guarantee that "you can wear it with confidence in any situation."
This peace of mind is arguably the greatest value of the HINOC Down 3-in-1 Jacket.
