Maximize Your Layering Freedom: Nanga's 'Nylon Tussah Track Vest' Is the Ultimate Mid-Layer

2026.04.16
In the great outdoors, how you layer your gear is just as crucial as what gear you wear. To adapt seamlessly to fluctuating temperatures, activity levels, and environmental shifts, a 'mid-layer'—something that's neither an outer nor an inner layer—is absolutely indispensable.
This season, Nanga has unveiled its 'Nylon Tussah Track Vest,' a piece engineered precisely for this purpose. How did this innovative mid-layer, designed to maximize your layering options, come to be? We'll delve into the development story through an interview with So Yonezawa, the brand's PR manager.

PROFILE

So Yonezawa

Born and raised in Shiga Prefecture, the birthplace of Nanga Inc., he joined the company straight out of college in 2013. He took over public relations in 2018 and moved to the PR team within the Sales Planning Division in 2023. His hobby is camping, which doubles as product testing.

A Vest with All the Makings of an Ideal Mid-Layer

The outdoor gear layering system is typically broken down into three parts: base layer, mid-layer, and outer layer. A vest is a smart option within this system, protecting your core while keeping your arms free for a full range of motion.
In recent years, however, the rise of advanced fleeces and insulated jackets has somewhat blurred the vest's role. Facing this, Nanga decided it was time to re-examine the value of the 'vest.'
"Because it's sleeveless, it's easy to move in and great for regulating your temperature. It gives you incredible layering freedom, and we wanted to reintroduce it as a piece that adapts to modern climates and lifestyles," he explains.
In today's world of drastic temperature swings, a vest's ability to adapt to body heat during activity and changing weather is a huge plus.
"It's not as bulky as an outer layer, and it's not as limiting as a base layer. It's the piece in your layering setup that adds what you need and gets rid of what you don't. That's the role of this vest."

Designed for Dynamic Comfort, Not Just for Standing Still

The name 'Track Vest' itself reflects Nanga's design philosophy.
"We took inspiration from athletic wear and track jackets. The word 'track' evokes dynamic actions—running, moving, being active. Outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and traveling are also all about being in constant motion.
"That's why this vest is designed to prioritize comfort while you're on the move, focusing on features like its lightweight feel and a build that doesn't restrict movement."
As a sleeveless vest, it offers excellent arm and shoulder mobility and won't feel bulky under an outer jacket. This very concept of 'dynamic comfort' is what defines the 'Track Vest.'

Choosing a Material That Balances Performance with Urban Style

The key to perfecting the vest came down to choosing the right material.
"A mid-layer designed for constant motion needs the perfect balance of lightness, wind resistance, and comfort. We also couldn't compromise on versatility—it had to be wearable for long seasons, from early spring through early fall."
In the search for a material that ticked all these boxes, nylon tussah emerged as the top contender.
Nylon tussah is a type of plain-weave fabric woven from high-density nylon yarn. The name 'tussah' originally refers to Tussah silk from wild silkworms. The fabric mimics its natural texture, featuring a subtle, fine unevenness and a moderate crispness from the weave.
Thanks to these properties, nylon tussah has long been a go-to material for outdoor gear that demands a combination of lightness, durability, and packability, like windbreakers and lightweight jackets.
"Its matte, cotton-like feel is another key attraction. It provides outdoor-grade strength and durability but has a refined look that blends right into city life. It was the ideal material that met all our criteria."
The plain-weave construction, where warp and weft threads interlace, gives the fabric high resistance to tearing and abrasion. Weaving it at a high density provides wind resistance while maintaining a flexible, supple feel.

Lining and Ventilation for Added Temperature Control

The nylon tussah material provided lightness, durability, and wind resistance. However, one crucial challenge remained in perfecting it as a mid-layer: how to manage the environment inside the garment.
"Outdoor apparel isn't just about warmth. It also needs thermoregulatory features that effectively release heat and moisture generated during activity, preventing the inside of the garment from getting too humid."
To overcome this challenge, a mesh material was chosen for the lining.
"The mesh construction creates a layer of air between the outside and the garment, ensuring a moderate level of insulation. It also helps reduce humidity and keep the interior of the clothing comfortable."
Additionally, ventilation was incorporated into the back yoke.
"Heat generated inside the garment tends to build up in the upper back, so we positioned a vent there to release heat and let in fresh air. This is especially effective in warm, windy conditions, like trekking from spring to early summer, or in breezy spots like by the ocean or a river."

Detailing Designed for Layering

Nanga's practical design philosophy is evident in every single detail.
"The simple, hoodless stand collar is designed for layering with hooded tops and shells. It prevents bunching at the neckline, ensuring a comfortable fit even when worn with other layers."
The front pockets are also part of this layering-focused design.
"We've adjusted the pocket placement so they don't interfere with the pockets of the jacket from the same series. When worn on its own, it still offers ample storage for your gear and gadgets."

The Goal: A Versatile Mid-Layer for Any Situation

This vest is designed to function seamlessly, not just in the great outdoors but as an extension of everyday life.
"We envisioned a user who moves between nature and the city—someone who goes camping or hiking on the weekends and commutes by bike on weekdays. We aimed to create a garment for this lifestyle that isn't confined to a single purpose."
It transitions from the outdoors to daily urban life, working as an outer layer in spring, early summer, and fall, and as an inner layer in winter. The Nanga Nylon Tussah Track Vest is the perfect mid-layer solution, embodying the modern philosophy of layering.
