New Midsole Material! The New Balance '1080' Gets a Complete Overhaul

2026.01.23
New Balance's "1080" is a long-time bestseller, celebrated as a daily trainer that supports runners through their everyday workouts. Thanks to its premium cushioning, exceptional comfort, and simple design, it's also a popular choice for walking, commuting, and everyday wear.
The latest "1080 v15" introduces a brand-new midsole material. So, what is this new material, and how has it transformed the shoe?

A Shoe to Support Runners on the Long Run

A look at recent global trends reveals a rise in both competitive and event-focused runners. This includes those who enter races to set personal bests, use running watches to track their progress, join running clubs and communities, or participate in events like relays and ekiden. This trend is especially prominent among the younger generation.
The "1080 v15" was engineered to enhance the daily running experience for these dedicated individuals—those for whom running is a serious, daily commitment and an integral part of their lifestyle—and to support them on the long run.
The term "long run" carries a dual meaning here. The first is a long run in terms of time and distance. The second is a "long run" in terms of duration over time. Consequently, the "1080 v15" is engineered with features to help runners consistently cover long distances over the long term.

While previous "1080" models were also popular for walking and casual wear, the "1080 v15" zeroes in on core runners committed to the sport. It's now more optimized than ever for daily jogs, long slow distance (LSD) runs, and post-race recovery jogs.

A New Midsole Platform is Born

"Until now, New Balance's midsole platforms have been built on two pillars: FuelCell and Fresh Foam. However, the 1080 v15 introduces a new platform called Infinion."
"FuelCell is a midsole engineered for speed. Its key feature is energy return, with a focus on maximizing rebound. Fresh Foam is a midsole designed for a more comfortable run. It provides a soft, plush, and stress-free ride."
"Infinion was created to help you run longer and more efficiently. It boasts excellent durability and sustained rebound, maintaining its bouncy feel over the long haul," explains Aoi Mamiya, Running Footwear Manager at New Balance Japan, Inc.
As its name suggests, the previous "Fresh Foam X 1080 v14" was built on the Fresh Foam platform, which prioritizes cushioning and comfort. The "1080 v15," however, switches to a new midsole platform. By adopting Infinion—which is characterized by its sustained bounce, high cushioning, and ample rebound—the "1080 v15" delivers the features many runners demand from a daily trainer.
"The insert (insole) is also designed to provide a springy, resilient feel directly underfoot."

The "1080 v15" Achieves a Major Weight Reduction

In addition to its superior cushioning, rebound, and durability, a key feature of Infinion is its light weight. As a result, the "1080 v15" is also significantly lighter.
"The previous model weighed about 300g (per shoe, size 27.5 cm), while the 1080 v15 is approximately 260g. That's a reduction of about 40g, resulting in a shoe that delivers a lightweight ride along with a pleasant bounce."
The upper features a lightweight and highly breathable Breathable mesh. Built on the "Data to Design" philosophy, its construction provides a secure and comfortable fit that moves in sync with your foot while running. Additionally, it incorporates a gusseted tongue, which connects the upper and tongue to prevent your foot from sliding and the tongue from shifting inside the shoe.
The outsole has also been redesigned following the "Data to Design" concept. Working in synergy with a subtle rocker shape, this design ensures a smooth center-of-gravity transition from landing to toe-off.

The outer heel of the outsole features highly durable N durance.

A New Shoe That Breaks Away From the Traditional '1080'

The first '1080' model was released in 2011. Debuting as a long-distance running shoe with superior cushioning, it quickly gained acclaim, especially in the American market. With the release of the '1080 v6' in 2016, the platform was updated to feature Fresh Foam.
Ever since, the '1080' has been a flagship model in the Fresh Foam series. However, the '1080 v15' introduces a brand-new midsole platform, delivering a ride that is, unsurprisingly, a world apart from its predecessors.
The most noticeable difference compared to the previous model is its responsiveness. The midsole boasts high rebound elasticity, providing a sensation of being pushed back firmly before you sink in too deep. This allows for a smooth, rhythmic turnover with every stride.
The impressive responsiveness of the '1080 v15' is its biggest draw
In recent years, there's been a growing trend of runners seeking a bouncy feel in their daily trainers. The '1080 v15' is the perfect answer to this demand. If you're looking to enjoy your daily runs in comfort and elevate the quality of your jogs, this shoe is a must-try.
