Enhanced Propulsion & High-Speed Comfort! New Balance "FuelCell Rebel v5" Is Incredible

2025.07.23
The "FuelCell" series is built on New Balance's unique midsole material, "FuelCell," which offers excellent resilience and lightness. Among the lineup, "FuelCell Rebel" stands out as a non-plated model optimized for speedwork, enjoying significant popularity. The latest iteration, FuelCell Rebel v5, pursues even greater speed and high-speed comfort. This version features increased forefoot foam and upgrades to the outsole and upper.

A Speed Training Model with Exceptional Bounce & Lightness

"FuelCell Rebel remains grounded in the concepts of being lightweight and bouncy—that's been consistent since the very first model, and v5 is no exception," says Aoi Mamiya from New Balance Running Footwear.

New Balance's running shoes are mainly split between the "FuelCell" series (which FuelCell Rebel belongs to) and the "Fresh Foam" series.
The former is a collection focused on energy return and speed. Thanks to a highly responsive midsole material, you get rapid energy return. It's ideal for runners aiming to set race PRs or for those who prioritize speed during training.
The latter is all about a plush underfoot feel—like running on sand—with a fit that feels almost like a second skin, making it perfect for those looking for comfort and relaxed runs.
"FuelCell Rebel" has built a reputation as a top training and racing shoe option for serious runners. Its latest version levels up on comfort without compromising the original concept.

Forefoot-focused Updates

The midsole material remains the same as the previous model. The FuelCell compound, blended with PEBA, excels in both bounce and energy return.
"To deliver a more satisfying bounce than previous versions, we've slightly increased the thickness in the forefoot. This upgrade gives more spring on toe-off and enhances forward propulsion."
The outsole now has increased ground contact area under the forefoot and improved grip, which brings out the best in the midsole's bounce while supporting stable, fast-paced runs.
"While the v4 outsole was separated into three vertical sections for forward propulsion, the new version's thicker forefoot led us to increase the contact area for greater stability. The v4 also had some grip issues, which we've tackled in v5.
"Runners who've tried v5 report greater stability compared to the previous model. Some point to the apparently wider forefoot for this, but interestingly, the forefoot width is actually just a bit narrower. The improved stability is thanks to the new outsole design—not the shoe's width."

A Shoe that Fits the Foot Even More Comfortably!

The previous upper design prioritized minimal weight. In this version, comfort is the focus—resulting in a softer, plusher fit.
"The tongue now uses a soft, neoprene-inspired material, treating the foot to a gentle touch. The v4 also generated feedback around Achilles irritation, which has been addressed in this update as well."

The FuelCell Rebel’s renowned resilience, featherweight build, comfortable fit, and natural propulsion have earned immense support among runners. The latest "FuelCell Rebel v5" is already a sought-after model—with the pre-launch men's red/black version selling out instantly.
In testing the FuelCell Rebel v5 myself, what struck me was the springy, responsive ride. Before reviewing any specs, I assumed the midsole foam had gotten softer, but in fact, the compound is unchanged.
The increased bounce likely comes from the slightly thicker forefoot. In terms of stability, this model also outperforms its predecessor. With an outsole that reliably grips the ground, you can rely on a secure feel every step. It’s a shoe that now accommodates an even broader range of runners.
The sense of bounce and stability are clearly improved, while the upper feels noticeably softer
