What Is the Neuroscience-Based 'Nike Mind' Footwear All About?
Nike has just unveiled its first-ever footwear line grounded in neuroscience. The result of over a decade of engineering and manufacturing hurdles, the 'Nike Mind 001' and 'Nike Mind 002' feature 22 independent foam nodes per foot—those are the protrusions you can see on the outsole. These nodes are designed to act like pistons or gimbals, moving with an athlete's every step to help boost their sensory awareness.
Mindset: The Key to an Athlete's Performance
Nestled in Nike's headquarters in Oregon is the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL), an institute dedicated to the entire process from athlete performance research to product development and testing. For over 45 years, the NSRL has focused on studying the body in motion, all in the name of helping athletes achieve their dreams. As they brainstormed ways to offer even greater support, a new focus emerged: mindset.
"We understand that for athletes to deliver their best, a balance between physical and mental readiness is crucial. Mindset has been getting more and more attention recently as a game-changing factor that can create a real competitive edge.
For a long time, the NSRL has had scientists, including perception researchers, on its staff. A few years ago, neuroscientists joined the team, forming the Mind Science department to ramp up research into the athlete's mind," explains an EKIN (a specialist who shares the stories behind Nike's product technology, innovation, and development).
The neuroscientists in the Mind Science department, a cutting-edge team at the NSRL, utilize rare, mobile brain-body imaging equipment to study the nervous system, brain activity, and cognitive functions of athletes in motion. The unique insights from this research are then channeled into developing products and services that support every aspect of an athlete's journey—from preparation and training to competition and recovery.
And the very first innovation to emerge from the Mind Science department is none other than the 'Nike Mind 001' and 'Nike Mind 002'.

Supporting Athletes' Focus on the Present Moment
The "Nike Mind 001" and "Nike Mind 002" pack 22 independent foam nodes into each foot, designed to stimulate the sole. These nodes work like tiny pistons and gimbals, adapting to the athlete's every move. This system relays the ground's texture and feel, sharpening the athlete's sensory awareness."The soles of our feet are packed with thousands of sensory receptors. These are the sensors that detect stimuli like cold, warmth, touch, pressure, and pain.
For example, you might notice an uncomfortable feeling when a tiny pebble gets inside your shoe. This happens because the sensations of touch and pressure detect the pebble and transmit that information to your brain.
These sensors in the foot are called mechanoreceptors. They detect stimuli, convert it into electrical signals, and send them to the brain. While mechanoreceptors are found all over the body, they're especially concentrated in the soles of our feet. They play a vital role in adjusting our posture and movements by interpreting the ground's texture, incline, and firmness."
As Nike's first-ever footwear grounded in neuroscience, research on the "Nike Mind 001" and "Nike Mind 002" reportedly suggests that stimulating the soles of the feet by wearing them could potentially boost brain activity.
"For instance, similar to a form of meditation known as grounding, by consciously focusing on the sensations in your soles, you become more aware of how your feet connect with the ground, how your center of gravity shifts, and your body's overall stability. This helps athletes center their minds on the here and now."

A Sensation That Helps You Tune Into Your Body
On the launch of the "Nike Mind 001" and "Nike Mind 002," Eric Avar, VP of Innovation and Creative Director at Nike, commented, "The Nike Mind concept is a new sensory footwear that reawakens the foot, body, and mind. This is a new paradigm for performance, showing the potential to support future improvements in athlete ability."Trying on the "Nike Mind 001" and "Nike Mind 002" provides a sensation unlike any existing footwear. It's a departure from both barefoot-style shoes and recovery sandals—it's something entirely new.
While walking in them, I could feel more information from the ground than usual, drawing my awareness to my posture and body movements. They certainly seem like they would help you focus on your mind and body before a workout. I could also see them being useful for a daily check-in on your physical and mental condition.
It will be exciting to see not only these models but also what other products will emerge from the "Nike Mind" series in the future.
