THE NORTH FACE's Iconic Down Jacket "Nuptse Jacket" Showcases Incredible Performance
When you hear "down jacket," many people likely think of the "Nuptse Jacket."
This model, launched by THE NORTH FACE in 1992, was originally developed as outdoor cold-weather gear for expeditions (mountaineering and exploration).
Subsequently, it gained strong support from mountain professionals and made a breakthrough in the street scene by connecting with music and fashion.
In this article, let's explore the charm of the Nuptse Jackets, which has left footprints in both outdoor and fashion history.

Roots in Expedition Down Jackets Designed for the Mountaineering "Death Zone"
I spoke with Keita Sasaki, a designer for the brand."The birth of the Nuptse Jacket is closely related to the development of the expedition system that began in the '80s. The series was a layering system that connected shells, insulation, and accessories to enhance their functionality in harsh weather conditions. The North Face utilized the know-how acquired from the development of this system to complete the Nuptse Jacket."
The Nuptse Jacket was launched in 1992 as mountaineering wear designed to respond immediately in the death zone (above 8,000 meters where oxygen levels are too low for human survival).
The model name comes from a mountain range southwest of Everest. NUPTSE means "NUP" for "west" and "TSE" for "peak" in Tibetan.
An Icon Among Hip-hop Crews that Colored the '90s Music Scene
The reason the Nuptse Jacket became widely known was due to the music scene in the '90s."Members of hip-hop crews who gained popularity in the major charts all incorporated it into their style.
"The reason for its popularity was not only its ability to protect them from the severe winter cold of Manhattan and Brooklyn but also because the standing collar of the Nuptse Jacket did not interfere with the sweatshirts they preferred to wear underneath."
Entering the 2000s, the trend also took off in Japanese street fashion.
"At that time, the charismatic domestic brand SWAGGER's Ebisu group sparked it, and the popularity spread to the Ura-Hara style. It was featured in various fashion magazines and became widely recognized as a staple down jacket."

In 2006, the Nupste Bootie, the footwear version of the Nuptse Jacket, was introduced. This boot, designed for use inside the tent during winter camps, had rubber soles attached to down socks and became a worldwide hit.

In 2011, the first collaboration model with Supreme was launched. Notable celebrity rappers wore this model, creating a sensation.
In 2022, marking its 30th anniversary since debut, an anniversary model was released, keeping in mind environmental impact by skipping the textile dyeing process. Additionally, the resurgence of '90s fashion in recent years has reignited its popularity.
Functional Beauty Embodying the Brand's Design Philosophy
Why has the Nuptse Jacket become a fashion icon?"The reason lies in its highly perfected design, which has remained virtually unchanged since its birth. A phrase that embodies the design philosophy of The North Face, articulated by thinkers, designers, and architects including Buckminster Fuller, is 'Do more with less.' This means achieving the maximum with the minimum and is a significant principle for the brand.
"In other words, it signifies producing maximum performance and effectiveness with the least amount of material and substance. The North Face's Nuptse Jacket is one of the products that most embodies this design philosophy."

As Sasaki said, there is no waste in design.
"For example, the design featuring a color switch between the shoulders and the body. The area where the backpack's shoulder harness rests uses durable taffeta nylon to withstand wear, while the body features water-repellent ripstop nylon. The varying materials enhance functionality by switching them up."

The standing collar is one of the distinguishing features of this model.
"At the time of its release, down jackets were usually equipped with large hoods containing down, making this type of standing collar quite rare. This collar shape, which gives a neat appearance around the neck, is fashionably easy to incorporate, thus broadening styling options."

The relatively short silhouette is said to be related to its origins.
"This was created as part of the development product line for the Expedition System, so it was conceived with layering in mind. Although the current Japanese model does not feature the zip-in-zip design, I believe that its unique rounded silhouette has garnered support from customers who wear it as an outer, rather than its original intended use as an inner piece."

"It is also noteworthy that it can be packed down small and stored in the inner pocket. Additionally, if turned inside out, you can see two stitches on the underside of the shoulder area. This is evidence of a small down compartment added to the invisible underside. This design prevents the down in the shoulder area from clumping or losing its loft due to the weight of a backpack. It reflects our commitment to attention to detail in our manufacturing process, even in areas that are not visible."
Uses Recycled Down from Japan's Representative Down Manufacturer
Warmth, which is the essence of down jackets, is definitely not overlooked."We use high-quality clean down that can handle winter outdoors. The down we use is sourced from Kawada Feather, a company that handles everything from down processing and manufacturing to bedding production in Japan. They are well-known for their advanced cleaning techniques, utilizing super-soft water that penetrates every detail of the down, alongside a special washing method called 'togi-wash' that complexly agitates the feathers to clean them."

This model also utilizes green down, which is recycled from feathers that Kawada Feather has used in their down products. Even though it is recycled down, superior cleaning techniques ensure that dirt and dust adhering to the feathers are thoroughly removed, fully bringing out the down's natural warmth, lightness, and softness. Additionally, there is almost no smell unique to down.
Even after more than 30 years since its debut, its popularity remains undiminished.
"I believe the reason the 'Nuptse Jacket' continues to be loved across generations is its high styling versatility. The simple design without waste matches a variety of outfits, from Americana to skate, outdoor, and dress styles."
While the styling of down jackets tends to become overly uniform, the "Nuptse Jacket" serves as an ideal canvas reflecting the individuality of its wearer.

The North Face's flagship item, combining uncompromising specs as winter gear with high potential as a fashion item. Even after over 30 years since its birth, it continues to record top class sales every winter.
Its capabilities truly embody the philosophy of "Do more with less."
Users who acquire the "Nuptse Jacket" will surely appreciate the maximum performance that a single down jacket can deliver.
