How Are Smart Glasses Created to Seamlessly Blend Into Daily Life? Oakley Meta Turns Technology Into the Ultimate Supporter

2026.09.02
Smart glasses have long been anticipated as the interface of the future. However, due to challenges in comfort and usability, they often generated buzz without achieving widespread adoption.
Oakley stepped up to solve this issue. Co-developed with Meta, the AI-powered glasses "Oakley Meta" have finally arrived in Japan. How did both companies divide roles and approach design to integrate advanced tech without sacrificing eyewear comfort? Based on an interview with an Oakley representative, we explore their development process.

Focusing on Everyday Integration Without Feeling Like Technology

One factor that has hindered the spread of smart glasses is the discomfort of wearing them. Unlike smartphones, glasses face the absolute requirement of resting continuously on the face for long periods. If weight is concentrated on a specific area, it strains the nose and ears, while bulkier frames depart from everyday aesthetics. Moreover, if frequent hand gestures are required for controls, the core advantage of hands-free convenience is lost.

In the development of Oakley Meta, the priority was not simply adding features to sunglasses, but ensuring that the technology didn't feel intrusive.
"The face is an extremely sensitive area. Products that make you acutely aware of technology or force new behaviors won't blend into everyday life. What we aimed for with Oakley Meta was a product that packs features like AI, a camera, and open-ear audio while offering a design you'll want to wear every day and a natural user experience."

How Oakley and Meta Fused Their Two Technologies

At the core of Oakley Meta's development was the concept of "Athletic Intelligence."
Rather than having AI make decisions on behalf of people, this idea relies on AI providing necessary information at the right time during sports or daily activities to support human action.
To turn this concept into a physical product, Meta handled the AI and software, while Oakley drew on its long-established expertise in eyewear design. By fusing their respective strengths, the two companies developed a wearable product that feels natural during both sports and everyday life.
Initially, the Oakley Meta project did not set a rigid end goal. Instead of deciding what to build upfront, it began by exploring what kind of experiences could be created by combining Oakley's performance eyewear with Meta's AI and connected technologies.
"In this development process, rather than setting a firm goal right from the start, our focus was on exploring what possibilities this product held."
Both teams defined the product architecture early on and developed it on a shared platform. According to project representatives, it took about 10 to 11 months from finalizing the direction to completing the first prototype. What drove this rapid development was designing the eyewear and digital features as a single, unified product.
The division of roles was clear-cut: Meta managed the digital foundation—including AI, voice controls, camera, connectivity, and app integration—while Oakley provided its expertise in eyewear design, covering facial fit, optical performance, stability during sports, and helmet compatibility. The biggest challenge was not merely placing the two side by side, but integrating them so seamlessly that users wouldn't feel any boundary between them.
"We view Oakley Meta as a product that embodies 'Athletic Intelligence.' This concept isn't about technology or AI replacing human ability or judgment, but rather unlocking a person's innate potential and performance to enrich their daily experiences. We believed technology should never be a ruler, but always the ultimate supporter. This philosophy became a vital guiding principle for our subsequent product development."

Fusing Two DNAs: Eyewear Expertise and AI Technology

Housed within the frame are a camera, open-ear speakers on both sides, multiple microphones, a battery, and connectivity hardware.
The lifestyle model, the "Oakley Meta HSTN," packs a 12-megapixel camera, a speaker on each side, a 5-microphone array, and 32GB of storage, offering up to 8 hours of battery life under normal use. Fitting all this into an everyday silhouette required more than just miniaturizing components—it demanded a layout that prevents weight from concentrating on specific areas of the nose or ears.
Project representatives highlighted fit and comfort as critical themes during development.
"While fitting multiple components like the camera, speakers, and battery inside a compact frame, we strived for a design with an optimized weight balance that stays comfortable even during extended wear."
This is where Oakley's decades of experience in ergonomic frame design proved invaluable: stabilizing the relationship between line of sight and lenses, preventing slippage during movement, and distributing pressure across contact points. By simultaneously refining the internal layout as an electronic device and the external design as eyewear, the team ensured that adding features didn't translate into extra wearing discomfort.

The Field of View Becomes an Interface: A New Dimension Expanding the Athletic Experience

On the other hand, Meta's expertise shined in the control scheme interface. By adopting voice commands and touch controls, users can capture photos, take calls, and access Meta AI completely hands-free.

"First-person athletic footage allows users to share immersive experiences that were difficult to capture with conventional smartphones or cameras."
A defining feature of Oakley Meta is its ability to record moments without diverting your eyes, even in situations where you would previously have needed to pull out a smartphone or camera. Final sprints before the finish line, a crucial stroke on a challenging golf course, or breathtaking views from a mountain peak can all be realistically recorded and shared straight from the wearer's perspective.
And video isn't the only element powering this experience. The open-ear speakers, which deliver crystal-clear audio while letting ambient environmental sounds in naturally, play a vital role. The acoustic design maintains awareness of surroundings for safety during both sports and daily life.

The "Oakley Meta Vanguard" is designed to seamlessly pair with compatible Garmin smartwatches and bike computers rather than measuring all workout data directly on the glasses themselves. While the smartwatch handles tracking metrics like heart rate, pace, speed, elevation, and elapsed time, Meta AI provides access to that data—enabling voice checks and displaying post-workout summaries.

"Our goal was to allow users to seamlessly access essential features without having to take out their smartphones, keeping them fully focused on their workout."
Another key highlight is how this new value proposition spans everything from serious competitive sports to everyday life.
The "Oakley Meta Vanguard" features a frame specifically engineered for sports. Built with durability and active movement in mind, it boasts a high IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.
"The shield lens fits naturally even when wearing a helmet, providing a comfortable fit during intense activity. It also features a customizable action button that lets you assign controls to match your specific athletic needs."

Meanwhile, the "Oakley Meta HSTN" builds on the silhouette of Oakley's existing lineup, featuring a design that seamlessly fits light sports like golf and running, as well as daily use. The frame uses O Matter™, a lightweight yet highly durable material.
Both models are also compatible with photochromic and prescription lenses. Just like standard sunglasses, the ability to choose options tailored to your lifestyle is a major part of their appeal.

"Ultimately, our goal might be for people to stop thinking about the term 'smart glasses' altogether. You simply wear them naturally as eyewear, accessing the features you need as if it were second nature. We hope to see that kind of experience spread."
Whether smart glasses truly become part of daily life depends on more than just packed features. It requires all-day wearability, freedom of movement, and seamless connectivity with existing gear and services. Rather than simply piling on functions, Oakley Meta addresses the hurdles to smart glass adoption by refining comfortable wear and intuitive operation as genuine eyewear.
