Oboz: Sandal Styles From the Bozeman Outdoor Brand Forged in the Rocky Mountains
Bozeman, Montana. Nestled in the majestic Rocky Mountains, this city serves as the northern gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Its breathtaking natural environment has made it a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts.
Today, we're spotlighting Oboz, a brand that was born right here in Bozeman back in 2007.
Using nature as its personal 'development lab,' Oboz relentlessly pursues high performance through daily field testing. We sat down with Takeshi Ikeda, Manager of the Sales Department at Uniglobe G.K., to get the scoop on the brand's history and his top sandal picks for the season ahead.

Oboz: Born from Bozeman's Wilderness
“The brand name 'Oboz' is a fusion of 'Outside' and 'Bozeman.' Its founder, John Connelly, was a true giant in the American outdoor footwear industry with decades of experience. Thanks to this legacy, even though Oboz is younger than many other outdoor brands, it quickly became a household name across the United States.
John sadly passed away in 2024, but his vision lives on through the dedicated team that continues the brand. You can find Oboz at major outdoor retailers, including America's largest, REI, as the brand continues to grow its footprint, mainly in the U.S.”

Oboz's Classics: Bridging the Gap Between Trekking and Hiking
To get a real feel for Oboz, we started by talking about the brand's signature classic models.“Oboz has a whole lineup of outdoor shoes, but if we're talking classics, it has to be the 'Katabatic Low' and the 'Sawtooth X Low.'
Generally, with outdoor footwear, you pick your trekking shoes based on the environment—like whether you're tackling an 8,000-meter or 2,000-meter peak.
But in the U.S., 'hiking' often means covering much longer distances than what one might imagine in Japan. This puts a premium on performance that can endure hours of continuous walking.
Bozeman sits at an altitude of about 1,600 meters. This unique location is why Oboz excels at crafting footwear that hits the sweet spot between trekking and hiking—shoes that can handle high-altitude trails but are also built for long-haul comfort.
The 'Katabatic Low' boasts a light, nimble feel, making it perfect for light treks and even some trail running.
Meanwhile, the 'Sawtooth X Low' serves a similar purpose but is geared toward those who love a classic outdoor look, thanks to its distinct design, materials, and features.”

Oboz's Take on Recovery Sandals
With the brand basics and classic shoes covered, we turned our attention to the must-have sandals for this summer.“Oboz's flagship sandals are the 'Whakatā Ease' and the 'Whakatā Off-Road,' which comes with a heel strap.
Japanese summers have been getting incredibly hot, and the demand for sandals is growing every year. The sandal season is getting longer, and we're seeing more people getting into water activities like stand-up paddleboarding. With all that in mind, sandals have become a crucial key product for the brand.
Lately, a ton of brands have been releasing recovery sandals, and the whole concept of 'recovery' has really broadened.
These two Oboz models are definitely part of that conversation. They are designed as recovery sandals. Their wide shape and proprietary footbed provide a supportive, comfortable fit for tired feet.
The upper features a mesh material and an adjustable strap. But it's not just about cranking a strap tight; the fit comes from a 360-degree design that combines the shape of the upper, the footbed, and the outsole to hug your foot.
Think about it: after a long hike in heavy boots and thick socks, slipping into these breathable sandals is the perfect way to let your feet breathe and relax. That's a huge part of their appeal.
When your feet are fatigued, your arches can start to collapse, making it hard to walk with a firm footing. That's why this footbed is so carefully engineered—it lifts the arch to help you engage the sole of your foot properly again.”

Oboz's Unique EVA Sole: The Foundation of Walking Performance
You can't talk about the Oboz brand without mentioning the proprietary technology integrated into their insoles, midsoles, and outsoles. This philosophy is also clearly reflected in their sandals."Oboz's development technology is also incorporated into the footbeds and outsoles of our sandals. The midsole features EVA material, and from a recovery standpoint, we consider cushioning performance to be crucial. When you actually wear them, I think you'll feel some incredible cushioning.
Additionally, we've strategically placed a highly durable rubber outsole on the parts that contact the ground. This placement is designed to follow the motion of your foot as you walk, targeting high-stress areas from the heel to the little toe, and then to the big toe.
By placing rubber only where needed, the design preserves the signature softness of EVA without hindering the foot's natural movement. The grip is also fantastic, making them perfect for playing in streams and other waterside activities.
On top of that, I've heard that back when Oboz was still a small brand, even the factory staff who made the shoes wore them every day.
I believe the Whakatā Ease and Whakatā Off-Road are products that naturally fit into everyday life, not just for recovery or outdoor activities.
These sandals really feel like a direct reflection of the environment and lifestyle of Bozeman."

Protecting Bozeman's Nature: Oboz's Environmental Initiatives
Oboz cherishes the nature-rich landscape of Bozeman. We talked with them not only about their product creation but also about their various eco-friendly initiatives."At Oboz, we're also pouring our energy into eco-friendly initiatives. For example, the sandals I just mentioned use recycled polyester and vegan leather, and 20% of the EVA material is made from sugarcane-derived raw materials. Through these material choices, we aim to reduce our environmental impact from the manufacturing side as well.
One of these initiatives is our 'One More Tree' program. At Oboz, we have an ongoing project to plant one sapling for every pair of shoes sold. Since starting in 2007, we've planted over 7 million trees.
We're currently partnering with the non-profit 'Trees for the Future' to promote the 'Forest Garden' project, which supports sustainable agriculture. It's an initiative that not only helps conserve the environment through tree planting but also supports the livelihoods of people in developing nations.
Additionally, Oboz is engaged in 'carbon offsetting.' This is the idea of using various methods to directly or indirectly absorb or reduce the carbon dioxide emitted by economic activities.
In practice, on top of our tree-planting activities tied to sales, we're also introducing renewable energy with support from the 'Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF)' and offsetting the carbon dioxide emissions from our employees' commutes.
Moreover, we contribute to the conservation of waterside ecosystems through Water Restoration Certificates (WRCs)."

Oboz develops shoes for a wide range of outdoor activities, from trekking and hiking to trail running. Every one of their products strikes a high-level balance between durability and comfort.
Furthermore, with its brand aesthetic and commitment to the environment, you could say Oboz is an outdoor footwear brand that truly embodies the 'modern American spirit.'
Born from the nature and culture of Bozeman, Oboz is poised to expand even further across the globe as a new American standard.
