What's So Great About the On 'Cloudmonster 3', the First to Feature a Triple-Layer CloudTec?

2026.04.02
The sports brand On was established in Switzerland in 2010. With its mission to "Ignite the human spirit through movement," the brand provides premium footwear, apparel, and accessories for running, outdoor activities, training, tennis, and everyday life.
Then, in March 2022, On launched the 'Cloudmonster,' equipped with the largest volume of CloudTec—On's core, world-patented technology—ever. Its exceptional cushioning and distinctive, bold design earned it a following not just among runners, but also for gym workouts and in the fashion world, making it one of the brand's signature bestsellers.
Now, after about two years, the 'Cloudmonster' has undergone its second major update. Let's explore what makes it so special.

A First-Ever Triple-Layer CloudTec

The 'Cloudmonster' was a groundbreaking product that served as an entry point for many new runners to the On brand. Its performance, which balanced maximum cushioning with an explosive push-off, and its distinctive design featuring a bold logo on the side, captivated not only runners but sneaker enthusiasts as well.
The 'Cloudmonster 2,' released in February 2024, featured an even thicker sole for greater energy return. Now, the 'Cloudmonster' has evolved once more. Its most significant feature is undoubtedly the triple-layer CloudTec sole.
"The original Cloudmonster and Cloudmonster 2 used a dual-layer CloudTec, but the Cloudmonster 3 is the first in history to feature a triple-layer CloudTec. This delivers a level of cushioning and propulsion never seen before," explains Yuki Tsuchida, a TecRep at On Japan.
This triple-layer CloudTec also makes a strong visual statement. Thanks to its unique look, the 'Cloudmonster 3' is poised to become even more popular for everyday city wear.

Improved Fit Thanks to a Refined Last (Foot Shape)

A change to the last (the mold that gives a shoe its shape) is another key update for the 'Cloudmonster 3.' The previous 'Cloudmonster 2' was designed with a wider fit, leading to feedback from many runners that it felt too "loose." In response, this latest version features a modified last for a more comfortable and secure fit.
"The Cloudmonster 2 was especially wide around the toes, so many runners found it too loose. For the Cloudmonster 3, we've returned to a last that fits snugly, much like the original Cloudmonster. We're also introducing a wide-fit model for the first time in the Cloudmonster series, alongside the regular fit.
Runners who preferred the feel of the Cloudmonster 2 should consider the wide-fit option. Having two fits to choose from is a huge update in itself."
The upper is made of an engineered mesh that uses different weave patterns in various zones to provide both breathability and support. This improves airflow compared to the previous model, ensuring a more comfortable environment inside the shoe on long-distance runs. Padding has also been added to the tongue to alleviate pressure on the top of the foot.
"Another unique feature of the Cloudmonster 3 is the band on the tongue. You can tuck your tied laces into it, which lowers the risk of them coming untied and stops them from flapping around while you run."

The outsole's durability has also reportedly been improved.

A Highly Versatile, Do-It-All Model

On athlete Kotaro Shinohara took the stage at the media launch for the Cloudmonster 3, where he shared his thoughts on the new shoes.
On athlete Kotaro Shinohara
“When I first picked up the shoe, I thought, ‘Oh, three layers! This is different from anything before,’ and I also loved the uplifting colorway. When I ran in them, the cushioning felt just right. If a shoe is too soft during toe-off, it can feel heavy, but with the Cloudmonster 3, landings are soft, yet the push-off feels sharp. It's a versatile shoe you can use for everything from slow jogs to slightly faster-paced runs.
I preferred the fit of the original Cloudmonster and the cushioning of the Cloudmonster 2, but the Cloudmonster 3 feels like it combines the best of both. In fact, I wear the Cloudmonster 3 for everything from jogs at a 5-minute per kilometer pace to faster runs at a 3:30 pace, and even for my 30 km long runs.”
Shinohara says the most important quality he looks for in a jogging shoe is a seamless connection with his foot. He finds that the superior fit of the Cloudmonster 3 makes it feel like a natural extension of his own body.
When I slipped my own feet into the Cloudmonster 3, the first thing I noticed was the improved fit. When I ran in the previous version, the shoe felt a bit big, and I thought I should have gone down half a size. I didn't have that issue with this new model; it provided a snug, connected feel right away.
I really felt the cushioning when walking and during leisurely paced jogs. The triple-layer CloudTec compresses perfectly to absorb impact on landing. As I picked up the pace, its responsiveness really came to the forefront. It's an incredibly fun shoe to run in.
Comfortable running across a wide range of speeds
The original Cloudmonster was a hit not just for running, but also for gym workouts and casual city wear. This latest version looks poised to be just as versatile.
