Not Just Thick Soles! What Makes the New Standard Sandal "OOmega" from OOFOS® Special?

2025.05.03
Renowned in the medical field and among athletes, "OOFOS®" reigns as the pioneer of recovery shoes. Among its lineup, the thick-soled "OOmega" series not only boasts high design quality but also offers enhanced recovery effects, becoming a new standard for OOFOS®.
This time, we spoke with the development team about the unique features of the "OOmega" series, the background behind its creation, the attention to detail, and future plans.

Enhanced Recovery Performance Thanks to Thick Soles

First, we inquired about the common design and materials throughout the "OOmega" series.
“The biggest feature of the 'OOmega' series is the sole thickness, which is 15mm thicker compared to previous models. This allows us to maximize the cushioning performance of 'OOfoam™,' providing a soft and stable feel that cradles the entire foot.
"The patented proprietary material 'OOfoam™' absorbs 37% more shock compared to standard EVA materials, reducing strain on the feet, knees, and hips. Its high cushioning and excellent shock resistance come from the 'closed-cell structure (a structure with no gaps between molecules),' making it resistant to moisture, sweat, and odors, while also allowing for easy cleaning.”
"All OOFOS® sandals are designed to support natural weight transfer while walking. By incorporating a gentle curve in the sole from front to back, we enable a smooth transition of weight from heel to toe, applying a 'rolling design.' This design is well executed in the 'OOmega,' eliminating any instability despite the thick sole.
"Moreover, by creating a unified construction of the 'footbed,' designed based on ergonomic principles, and outsole, we achieve both flexibility and slip-resistance. The central arch part supports the foot securely, while the heel and forefoot are gently cradled to promote recovery effects.”

Classic Thong Type & Popular Slide Type

Offering extremely high functionality, OOFOS® sandals have also been designed with a strong commitment to aesthetics.
“The 'OOmega' has been crafted with particular attention to fashion among OOFOS® models. It was born as a derivative model of the slim 'OOlala,' which is particularly popular among women. Maintaining the design principles of 'OOlala,' it combines luxurious comfort with a substantial thick sole, making it especially appealing to younger generations and fashion-forward users.”

“On the other hand, the 'OOmega OOahh' launched in 2023 is a slide type model that is based on the upper design of the universally popular 'OOahh,' restructured into a more feminine slim silhouette.
"Additionally, to better fit the feet of users in Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, the forefoot has been designed wider.”

“OOFOS® items have understated logos to better blend into outfits.
"The color options are primarily centered around black and nomad (beige), which match both casual and dressy looks, developed in close collaboration with the Japan team. However, seasonal offerings may include vibrant colors like 'neon berry' and 'stardust.' We are also considering adding neutral greens and grays to our upcoming lineup.”

The Key is an Optimal Balance of Design & Functionality

Combining high levels of functionality and fashion, the "OOmega" and "OOmega OOahh" are reimagined models that have been updated with new attractions. However, what challenges did the development entail?
"The 'OOfoam™' used in OOFOS® items is a soft and unique material, which necessitated a different hardening process at various temperatures and humidity levels as we increased the thickness. It took time to find that optimal balance.
"Moreover, guaranteeing stability while increasing the sole height was another difficult aspect. We achieved a stable fit by slightly widening the width at the thong and heel areas."

Future Plans to Explore a Variety of Material Combinations

The "OOmega" series was born from overcoming challenges. Lastly, I inquired about future prospects.
"Currently, we are developing a new closed-toe shoe (a type that covers the toes) that applies the thick sole design of 'OOmega.' We are also challenging ourselves to combine it with upper materials such as canvas, mesh, and leather."

"The 'OOmega' series has a good compatibility with various materials, so there should be new possibilities explored in future design developments. Furthermore, there may be a release of an even thicker version of the shoe.
"While keeping in mind collaborations with attractive brands, we hope you continue to look forward to the evolving 'OOmega' series."
The "OOmega" series truly exemplifies the "ideal recovery sandal," balancing high fashion and practicality. It is set to become the perfect companion to endure the harsh summer that lies ahead.
