The Pac Sac backpack by ÉPOR (ROPÉ ÉPOR) is building a loyal following among professional women. Having sold over 10,000 units and topping e-commerce sales charts, this product might look like any other backpack at first glance. But hidden within is an ingenious design engineered to solve the everyday challenges modern women face.
We sat down with the designer, Shie Sato, to discuss the "built-in kitchen" concept that inspired this hit product and the journey of trial and error to perfectly balance function and beauty.

The Backpack Dilemma of the Hybrid Worker
The lifestyles of today's working women are more diverse than ever. We've seen a rise in "hybrid workers"—women who juggle multiple roles in a single day, from their careers to childcare, family, and personal hobbies. As commuting styles have become more casual, the number of women choosing backpacks for business is rapidly growing, thanks to the hands-free convenience and reduced physical strain. But many backpacks on the market failed to fully meet their needs. Products from outdoor brands, while highly functional, often clashed with blazers or more polished outfits. On the other hand, backpacks designed specifically for women often sacrificed functionality for excessive embellishments.
For ROPÉ ÉPOR, whose concept is "Work beautifully, comfortably," Sato aimed to develop a backpack suitable for any and every occasion. The target audience was women leading busy lives—those who might pick up their kids after work, head to the park on weekends, or actively pursue hobbies outside their jobs.
What they needed wasn't just a bag to carry their things, but a companion that would help them maintain a polished look and move gracefully through any situation.
Functional Beauty Inspired by the "Built-in Kitchen"
As Sato conceptualized the new backpack, her source of inspiration, surprisingly, was the "built-in kitchen."A built-in kitchen has a very modern, simple exterior—a sophisticated design that hides the clutter of daily life. But once you open a drawer or cabinet, you find a meticulously calculated storage space where cutlery, cooking utensils, and spices are all neatly organized. With every tool in an easy-to-reach spot, cooking becomes efficient and smooth.
Sato had a hunch that this structure—"simple on the outside, highly functional on the inside"—was exactly what a modern woman's backpack needed. The biggest drawback of most backpacks is that their large capacity can make them difficult to organize, often leading to fumbling for items buried at the bottom. The hassle of using smaller pouches and the stressful moments spent rummaging for a wallet at the checkout counter were major pain points.
The name "Pac Sac" embodies the idea of "packing" your belongings in an organized way and carrying them with simplicity. Like a built-in kitchen, its functionality isn't obvious from the outside, yet the user reaps all the benefits. This concept became the guiding principle for its development.
A Design that Strips Away 'Noise' and Condenses Functionality Inside

To embody the philosophy of the built-in kitchen, Sato thoroughly stripped away all visual "noise." A typical functional backpack would conventionally have side pockets for water bottles or numerous external zipper pockets. However, Sato made the bold decision to eliminate them.
Adding bumps and decorations to the exterior inevitably creates a more casual look. To achieve the luxurious feel of a high-end designer bag and a sophisticated look that pairs well with a blazer, the exterior had to be minimal. In its place, meticulous attention was paid to the internal structure.
The key was to assign a "home address" for every item. By designating an optimal storage spot for each item you carry—like a laptop, tablet, smartphone, wallet, and keys—users can effortlessly retrieve what they need.
The first distinctive feature is its division into two large compartments: a main storage area and a sub-compartment with multi-functional pockets. It's designed for independent storage, with a 14-inch laptop sleeve in the main compartment and a tablet pocket in the sub-compartment. There's also a key ring, cleverly placed so you can quickly access your keys when needed.

Sato adds that another crucial element of its beauty is the bag's ability to "stand on its own." A bag that slumps over when placed on the floor or a chair is anything but elegant. Through a cleverly designed core material and structure, the bag maintains a firm, upright form regardless of its contents, ensuring its presence is beautiful even when set down.
An Update to Eliminate "Searching Time"
Roughly two years after its debut, the "Pac Sac" received its first major update. Throughout this revamp, Sato's focus remained squarely on one thing: "how to enhance its beauty."The most significant upgrade is the addition of an internal water bottle holder. Since the design prioritizes a sleek exterior over side pockets, water bottles and folding umbrellas would sometimes tip over inside. To solve this, a dedicated holder was installed internally, leaving the external appearance completely untouched. This keeps bottles stored upright and prevents them from getting mixed up with other belongings.

A new strap and a detachable carabiner have also been added to the shoulder strap. This is a handy spot to attach things like a pass card holder or wireless earbuds, streamlining your movements at ticket gates and while on the go.
The subtle design adjustments are also worth noting. The attachment angle of the shoulder straps was slightly altered, which helps reduce fabric wrinkling when the bag is worn and improves how it contours to the body.

Additionally, the starting point of the front pocket's zipper was shifted, evolving the design to be easily opened and closed with one hand. While these modifications are subtle enough to be missed at first glance, they were crucial updates for dramatically improving both the user experience and the bag's overall beauty.

To balance eco-friendliness and functionality, the bag is crafted from recycled nylon. From a wide array of nylon materials, one was selected for its subtle sheen and structure, then treated with a water-repellent finish. Its water-repellent capability is effective enough to handle light rain without an umbrella, making it a welcome feature for busy women who can use it without worrying about the weather.

Beautifully Curating Every Moment for the Modern Working Woman
The finished "Pac Sac" was welcomed by a chorus of women who felt, "This is exactly what I've been looking for."Its "style-enhancing effect" has been particularly praised. Sato reportedly obsessed over making the backpack look stylish when worn and how it could beautifully complement the body's silhouette. The perfectly balanced size—not too big, not too small—and a form that contours to the body banish the frumpy look often associated with backpacks.
There was also strategic thinking behind the sizing options. In addition to the regular size, which fits a 14-inch laptop, a smaller "Mini" version was introduced. This gives users a choice for days when they're not carrying a PC or for times when they want to be more agile. This offering adapts to the evolution of digital devices and diverse work styles, while also serving as a well-proportioned option for women with smaller frames.
The color variations also break from the mold. By offering nuanced shades like dark brown and beige in addition to classic black, the bag provides the appeal of a fashion accessory, not just a business necessity. The hardware, available in gold or silver, adds a touch of jewelry-like sparkle, further enhancing its feminine charm.

The "Pac Sac" from Rope E'por is far more than just a tool for carrying things. It's a sophisticated backpack that, much like a modular kitchen, conceals the "noise" of everyday life and delivers the right function at the right time.
Through this backpack, Sato's goal was to help working women organize their time and enhance their presence. When belongings are organized, you spend less time searching. When you spend less time searching, you gain peace of mind. And it is that sense of calm that becomes the source of beauty for women navigating their busy lives.
This masterful fusion of function and aesthetics is destined to remain a trusted companion for modern women in today's hybrid work world. In the future, a tote version is also scheduled for release, promising even more options to match various fashion styles.
