Sandals that Bring Sophistication to an Outfit—Examining the Appeal of Paraboot's Gurkha Sandal "Pacific"
When it comes to Paraboot's signature models, the "Michael" and "Chambord" often come to mind. However, for the summer season, it's the Gurkha sandal "Pacific" that takes center stage. Its calmly designed appearance, while retaining a touch of casualness, exudes a refined atmosphere perfectly suited for adults. This time, we interviewed Toshiyuki Karasawa from Paraboot's PR team to learn about the history and allure of the "Pacific."
Gurkha Sandals: The Elegant Sandal Inspired by Military Origins
When you opt for sandals for summer styling, you get a sense of coolness, but they often tend to look overly casual. That's when the "Pacific," crafted by the famed French leather shoe brand Paraboot, becomes the perfect choice. While they're Gurkha sandals, they incorporate materials and designs derived from dress shoes, offering a refined, dressy touch as well. When we asked Karasawa about Gurkha sandals, he explained:"Gurkha sandals are said to have originated from the 'Gurkha soldiers,' a mercenary unit formed in Nepal by the British, who would wear them to traverse Nepal's rugged mountain paths. If the deck shoe staple 'Barth' is inspired by the navy, then 'Pacific' draws its roots from the army, which is a fascinating contrast.
The mesh-woven upper covers the foot broadly, combining breathability and a snug fit—occupying a unique space that's between a sandal and a dress shoe. It’s this blend that makes them especially popular in this season.

When you want to keep your feet cool, the 'Pacific' maintains an elegant look that's less casual than sport or beach sandals. Not only do they work barefoot, but they're also a great match with socks, making them a go-to item not just for summer, but from spring to fall, too."
Even though they're sandals, the leather-woven uppers prevent them from looking childish. That's a big reason for their popularity, but it wasn't always smooth sailing from the beginning. On that front, Karasawa continues:
"In fact, I'm told that sales were sluggish when they were first released. Gradually, select shops began to carry them; those shops shared their appeal and that's when popularity started to spread. I remember that the 'Pacific' played a key role in kicking off the Gurkha sandal boom," Karasawa recalls.
Indeed, as "Pacific" gained popularity for its reputation as a sandal that wore like dress shoes, other brands quickly followed suit. I also recall this trend from back in the day.
Commitment to Craftsmanship for Outstanding Comfort
So what makes the "Pacific" so popular? Aside from its dressy looks, the biggest factor might be the comfort—something you wouldn't expect from a sandal. Karasawa adds:"The fit of the upper goes without saying, but I think one major reason people find them so comfortable is the cushiony footbed, which is in direct contact with the foot.
"This translates to a world of difference in comfort compared to the vinyl or rubber materials commonly used in sandals. The heel cup, shaped neatly like a dress shoe and reinforced with a core material, securely cradles your heel, providing a solid hold even if worn a little loosely."
The "Pacific" features a natural latex "SPORT" sole, which isn't even found in their classic models like "Michael" or "Chambord." Compared to regular synthetic rubber soles, this one is dramatically softer and offers excellent cushioning and flexibility—key factors that enhance comfort.
"When you think of Paraboot, the brand is renowned for its authentic Norwegian welted construction. However, when it comes to the 'Pacific,' they have chosen to use the cemented construction method, bonding the upper and sole together. Considering comfort, cement construction allows the shoe to break in much more quickly, and excels in flexibility of the sole. That means you can enjoy a comfortable fit right from the start, without needing to wear them in multiple times—a major advantage."
Given that these sandals are designed with comfort as a priority, Paraboot’s decision to switch up the way the sole and upper are joined truly reflects the brand’s commitment to quality.
This Season’s Top Pick: The New "Gray Suede" Colorway
The "Pacific" lineup goes beyond just standard leather; a variety of leather options are offered. Karasawa commented further:"Recently, the 'Pacific' range has welcomed new additions like 'Vegetable Tanned Leather' and 'Suede'. This season’s highlight is the 'Gray Suede' model, so I definitely recommend checking it out."

Paraboot offers more than just the "Pacific" among its range of sandals. Karasawa provided more insights:
"Currently gaining popularity is the 'Ferret,' which is more slender at the toe and leans into dressier elements. There’s also the three-strap structured 'Ouvea,' the closed-toe 'Adriatic' with a strap at the heel, as well as the 'Athenes,' which is a clogs-style model. These are now part of the lineup.

"With 'Pacific' continuing to be a bestseller, people who want to avoid matching with others are now turning to these other sandals. Each of them matches the comfort and attention to detail of the 'Pacific,' so it’s worth giving them a try."
"Pacific" masterfully incorporates subtle dress elements and showcases meticulous manufacturing throughout, from its construction method to every detail. This summer as well, the reign of the "Pacific" remains unshaken. There truly are no other Gurkha sandals that can rival this level of comfort, so it looks like this stronghold will stand firm for now.
