Not Yet in Japan: Sculptural Beauty as the Spice of Daily Life—Introducing Nordic Jewelry Brand Pearl Octopuss.y

2026.01.21
Organic forms inspired by the Norwegian sea and mountains, and bold jewelry that resonates with the lifestyle of today's woman. Effortlessly navigating these two poles is the brand Pearl Octopuss.y, which is currently capturing the world's attention.
"All you need is one statement piece of jewelry to elevate your basic wardrobe," says founder and designer Cathrine Børter. Based in Oslo, the brand merges the serene nature of the Nordics with contemporary playfulness, holding the power to dramatically transform everyday attire.

A Tale of Jewelry Born from Serendipity and Intuition

Behind the whimsical brand name lies a creative story where serendipity and intuition intertwine.
"When I first posted my work on social media, one of the jewelry pieces looked like an octopus, so I wrote that in the caption. That's how it became the brand name," Børter says with a smile. The classic beauty of a pearl and the organic, mysterious form of an octopus—just as the words suggest, this name, where playfulness and creativity coexist, symbolizes the brand's universe.
Her design starting point isn't seasons or trends, but rather "atmosphere" and "mood." While honoring the established language of her signature forms and materials, she considers it crucial for new creations to "organically" connect to that universe.
Her method—referencing the archives while layering new impulses, sometimes by chance, sometimes by intuition—is less a process of renewal and more like cultivating a "universe." "I find joy in merging new impulses with our existing aesthetic," she explains.
At the core of her inspiration lies the nature of Norway. The soft, undulating curves of seafoam on the coastline and the sharp, rugged crags of mountain ridges. "My sensibilities are sparked by heart-stirring moments and powerful emotions," she says, and this duality of the natural world is vividly reflected in her work.
The delicacy of pearls and crystals meets the toughness of metal and chains. By intuitively combining these contrasting elements, she puts a unique spin on classic materials.
"I want to move beyond the traditional Nordic design, often labeled as minimalism, to express my own universe."
By channeling a strength hidden within tranquility into sculptural forms, she defines her own unique vision of "Nordic beauty."

The Philosophy: Make Everyday Wear Dramatic

The reason Pearl Octopuss.y has won so many fans is its remarkable "versatility." Despite their powerful presence, the pieces blend surprisingly well into everyday life.
"I don't like to overthink my outfits, so it's important to have a foundation that you can play with through jewelry. I want people to feel freer and have more fun with the clothes they already own."
True to her word, the pieces are designed to be worn in multiple ways, and their brilliance is most striking against basic attire like a T-shirt and jeans. Unconstrained by seasons, gender, or trends, they empower the wearer with confidence and playfulness—that is the brand's true genius.

A Globally Acclaimed Aesthetic and a Commitment to Circularity

The brand's momentum extends far beyond Norway.
Getting picked up by the iconic American luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman and e-commerce powerhouse Net-a-Porter was a major turning point, fast-tracking its international recognition. The fact that artists like American musicians Lenny Kravitz and Katy Perry, and South Korean DJ Peggy Gou, have embraced the brand is a testament to its appeal. "In a world where people can choose anything, being recognized is a genuine honor," Børter shared.
Last August, during Oslo Runway, the brand staged a show in front of historic paintings at the Munch Museum. In a space where art and fashion converged, they created a powerful moment that put jewelry in the spotlight. Looking ahead, the brand is also exploring an expansion into bags, shoes, and fragrances.
However, behind its dazzling expansion lies a sincere philosophy: "to deliver only what you can truly love." This belief—that "what you choose should be something you truly love"—is manifested in a deep commitment to sustainability. The brand deliberately limits its variety of materials, designing products so that in the rare event of a defect, they can be disassembled to recover and reuse the materials.
This meticulous choice of materials extends down to the finest details, with jewelry pouches made from fair-trade certified organic cotton and drawstrings from natural hemp.
Bringing playfulness to everyday life and sculptural beauty to your look, Pearl Octopuss.y transcends mere ornamentation. It is set to become a small but powerful bridge, connecting the wearer to the world.
