A High-End Smartwatch Built for the Great Outdoors
What do you want a smartwatch for? That's the first question to ask when you're shopping for one. If you're just looking for a smartphone on your wrist for everyday convenience, Polar's Grit X2 Pro might not be your top pick. However, if you're searching for a capable companion for your outdoor sports adventures, you've just found your perfect match.
Even so, you might not be too familiar with the Polar brand.
“Polar Electro is a Finnish company founded in 1977. In 1982, we developed the world's first wireless heart rate monitor for training, making us one of the earliest pioneers in the field of heart rate-based training.
‘Ever since, we've continued to create industry-leading products, backed by over 40 years of continuous research and analysis.’”
Heart rate monitoring is now an essential part of modern exercise, and you could say Polar was the trailblazer that started it all.

“‘The accuracy and high performance of our products, especially our outstanding heart rate monitoring features, are recognized and used by top athletes and experts around the world. We've developed our own proprietary algorithms based on heart rate, ensuring that our products utilize information derived from precise data measurement.’”
While continuously refining its core technology of accurate heart rate measurement, the brand has expanded into various fields, launching a diverse range of wearable devices tailored to different goals and activities.
“‘We are confident that the precision of our heart rate measurement and the sheer volume of data we've collected are unrivaled globally. We hold a vast dataset spanning from professional athletes to everyday users, allowing us to feed insights from advanced data analysis back into our products.’”

The two 'Grit X2 Pro' models are the pinnacle of this specialization, focusing on outdoor sports. In recent years, a wide variety of outdoor activities—from trail running and backcountry skiing to traditional mountaineering and hiking—have gained popularity in Japan, driving up demand for high-quality outdoor watches.
“‘This new model embodies all the essential elements of a high-quality outdoor smartwatch, executed at a very high level. While it's an evolution of the previous model, its performance has been enhanced in many significant ways.’
‘For instance, it has extended battery life for prolonged outdoor use and a display with excellent visibility even in bright sunlight. It also features built-in offline maps that work without an internet connection.’
‘Additionally, we’ve introduced a new lightweight, high-performance titanium model and ensured both are MIL-SPEC compliant.’”

We're told that a key focus for this model was the built-in offline maps.
"This is the first time we've included this feature in the series. It allows you to see your precise current location on an offline map based on GPS data. This means a key feature is the ability to navigate with accurate map information even in environments without an internet connection.
In recent years, outdoor activities that involve going off-trail have become more popular, and we believe route navigation using offline maps is extremely useful in those situations."
The combination of offline maps and the model's dual-band GPS, which supports signals on different frequency bands, enables swift corrections to pinpoint your location accurately, even among tall buildings, in forested areas, or in other challenging environments.
Proven Toughness Backed by Military-Spec Compliance

One of the standout features of this watch is its compliance with military specifications (MIL-SPEC), the same standards required for U.S. defense equipment. Anyone interested in military gear will understand just how strict these standards are. Its superior reliability compared to a typical outdoor watch is noteworthy.
"The latest standard for U.S. defense equipment, 'MIL-STD 810H,' requires products to withstand extremely harsh conditions, including exposure to high and low pressures, high and low temperatures, immersion, and corrosion.
Achieving a high-performance, tough watch makes MIL-SPEC compliance an essential element. The previous 'Grit X' model was also compliant, but for this new watch, not only has the body been updated, but the standard itself has also been raised over time. Meeting it required a lot of trial and error."

Actual tests have confirmed it can handle pressure changes from rapid shifts in altitude. Regarding temperature, it has undergone testing designed to simulate everything from scorching heat to freezing conditions, maintaining stable operation across a wide temperature range of -20°C to +50°C.
Furthermore, it meets MIL-SPEC standards for humidity, shock resistance, and corrosion, delivering reliable performance even in the most demanding outdoor environments.
"It's also highly resistant to saltwater corrosion, making it suitable for use at the seaside. It's sure to be a great companion at beach resorts and similar settings."
Its ability to handle a wide range of situations, from hardcore outdoor sports in the mountains and fields to relaxing scenes at a seaside resort, is another one of this watch's major draws.
Nordic Design and Polar's Uniqueness
When it comes to differentiating a smartwatch, we absolutely have to talk about its design.
"I also want to mention that it won an 'iF Design Award 2025,' which is considered one of the world's top three design awards. It expresses the appeal of a traditional timepiece with details like the textured bezel and the three-dimensional feel of the case, all while achieving a case thickness that is exceptionally comfortable to wear."
The surface of the AMOLED display is made of high-hardness sapphire glass, also used in luxury watches, adding to its premium feel.
Additionally, the titanium model includes a leather wristband. The ability to swap bands enhances its appeal as an accessory, creating a finish that goes beyond being just a smartwatch to capture the hearts of traditional watch enthusiasts as well.

Finally, we asked Tomoeda what he considers the one key feature he wants to highlight.
"I'd really like to draw your attention to the battery performance, which improves year after year. I think it's especially essential for outdoor situations where you're outside for long periods."
As for the crucial battery performance, it boasts some impressive stats: up to 43 hours in training mode with dual-band GPS and continuous heart rate monitoring, up to 140 hours in power-saving mode, and up to 10 days in smartwatch mode. Another key point is its fast-charging capability via a USB-C cable.
"This is just my personal opinion, but since this is a model from Finland—a snowy country—I feel the battery itself is highly resistant to the cold. I've had experiences on business trips to Finland where, in low temperatures, other companies' product batteries would die, but only the Polar device kept running."
Some subsequently released models have even featured replaceable batteries. He also emphasized that the watch is equipped with a proprietary OS.
"Equipping our watches with an OS based on a proprietary algorithm developed through years of heart rate monitoring is a testament to Polar's integrity. The fact that we license our sports and sleep tracking features to other companies is something you'd expect from a leading manufacturer."
The 'Grit X2 Pro' is an outdoor watch that fully embodies Polar Electro's mission to provide ever-better devices that support outdoor activities. If you're struggling to choose a smartwatch, you might want to put your trust in this highly reliable and tough companion.
