After 10 Years of Development, What Makes UNIQLO's High-Performance Outerwear "PUFFTECH" so Remarkable?

2024.11.16
This winter, it’s predicted to be colder than usual due to the effects of La Niña and other factors.
In preparation for this harsh winter, UNIQLO is focusing its efforts on a specific high-performance outerwear. The outerwear named PUFFTECH showcases the latest advancements in fiber technology utilized in its insulation.
Claimed to be the lightest and warmest insulation ever by UNIQLO, it possesses various features such as being non-bulky, water and moisture-resistant, and resistant to feather leakage.
We spoke with the PR team at UNIQLO Co., Ltd. about the development story and the latest lineup.

Functionality of Insulation Culminated by UNIQLO's Wisdom

First, can you tell us what "PUFFTECH" is?
This is a functional insulation developed in collaboration with Toray, a material manufacturer specializing in advanced materials. It mimics the structure of natural down using synthetic fibers and achieves high thermal insulation by creating layers that hold a large amount of air. "PUFFTECH" is the name of this insulation and also the name of the outerwear that utilizes it.
Last year, we trial-released vests and parkas, and the response exceeded our expectations. Therefore, this season, we will fully launch it as our main outerwear.
You claim that "PUFFTECH is the lightest and warmest in UNIQLO's history." What’s the secret?
The secret lies in the newly developed fibers. It is made from several fibers that are one-fifth the thickness of human hair. By further springing these ultra-fine hollow fibers, we succeeded in creating more air layers.
Additionally, while most products have flat insulation layers, we managed to shape this insulation into grain form, which is another hallmark. This means it can hold even more air while achieving exceptional lightness.
Were there any challenges in the development process?
The warmth of down is influenced by the power of its fluffiness, quantified as loftiness. The biggest challenge was to enhance this loftiness while also achieving a soft texture similar to real down. We repeated over 100 prototypes in a year, and it took us 10 years to complete.
What are the features of "PUFFTECH"?
It is light and warm, and even with a small amount of insulation, it is sufficiently warm, preventing a bulky silhouette. As a result, it doesn't look bulky when worn, making it easy to put on and take off. Moreover, it’s compact and easy to carry since it is lightweight and doesn’t take up much space.
Another feature is its resistance to water and moisture. It retains its thermal insulation even in environments with over 90% humidity like rain or fog, and the outer material is also treated for water resistance, which allows it to handle sudden light rain.
Additionally, it dries faster compared to regular down, allowing for home washing.

Solving the Feather Leakage Issue in Down Jackets

UNIQLO already has a blockbuster product, "Ultra Light Down." How does "PUFFTECH" differ?
Launched in 2009, "Ultra Light Down" broke the traditional heavy and bulky image of outdoor down products, transforming down jackets into urban daily wear through astonishing lightness and a slim design. The down jacket recorded explosive sales and has continued to evolve, gaining support worldwide.
While "Ultra Light Down" represents UNIQLO's winter offerings, it also presented challenges. Customers voiced concerns about feathers sticking to sweaters worn underneath. This issue is due to a phenomenon called feather leakage from the quilt.
However, "PUFFTECH," with its granular structure, has a characteristic that minimizes feather leakage, allowing us to overcome this challenge.
The designs are also diverse.
Yes. The difficulty with feather leakage has brought design benefits as well. Down jacket designs often used wide horizontal quilts to limit feather escape, but "PUFFTECH" is inherently less prone to feather leakage, allowing for various designs including diamond, block, and non-quilt patterns.
This season, we have 4 styles for men, 6 for women, and 5 for kids/babies. Items using "PUFFTECH" are also available in UNIQLO U and UNIQLO: C.
"PUFFTECH Parka (Men's)," 6,990 yen (tax included)
"UNIQLO:C PUFFTECH Quilted Coat (Women's)," 9,990 yen (tax included)

Responding to Diversified Needs as Times Change

What factors have contributed to achieving such a high level of completion?
While UNIQLO's long-standing manufacturing know-how and technical skills play a significant role, the foundation of development has been customer feedback.
With recent sudden weather changes and trends of mild winters, the demand for outerwear has expanded beyond what it used to be. Nowadays, just being lightweight and warm is no longer sufficient for down jackets.
PUFFTECH has responded to this diversification of needs by adding various features such as being lightweight and warm comparable to real down, not bulky, portable, easy to put on and take off, long-lasting, water-resistant, and machine washable at home.
"PUFFTECH Compact vest (Men's)," 3,990yen (tax included)
What role will PUFFTECH play for UNIQLO in the future?
There are many well-known items such as HEATTECH, AIRism, and Soufflé Yarn, but I want PUFFTECH to be developed into an item that is recognized as “UNIQLO's winter outerwear…” or “UNIQLO's insulation material…” as well.

A Global Marketing Strategy that Shows UNIQLO's Seriousness

You can see PUFFTECH in the media and on the streets.
PUFFTECH is being deployed in stores worldwide, and it is an item that UNIQLO is focusing heavily on at a global scale. The aim is to gain high recognition as a new category of LifeWear, and to expand its position in the lightweight outerwear market that was built with Ultra Light Down.
To achieve this goal, we have conducted a large-scale marketing campaign like never before. In October, we held an event in Paris during Fashion Week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the brand, where PUFFTECH was prominently showcased.
Afterwards, we utilized a universal promotional video across various countries, including the US, Europe, China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. In Japan, we ran wrapped advertisements in major train stations in Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hakata to increase recognition.
What kind of evolution can we expect moving forward?
UNIQLO continuously researches the flow of the times and improves products while listening to customer feedback. HEATTECH, which has been updated for 21 years, is a prime example of this. Just like HEATTECH, PUFFTECH will continue to evolve, aiming to someday replace existing down jackets and exceed their presence through ongoing technological innovation.
