Run Freely & Comfortably in All Kinds of Places! Stepping into Salomon's GRVL Shoes

2025.03.21
Gravel roads, dirt trails, grassy areas, and more. Gravel running allows you to explore and discover diverse terrains. People in the U.S. and Europe are increasingly enjoying this running style, which emphasizes exploration and adventure over competition.
Salomon has released shoes that cater to this gravel running style. What makes gravel running so appealing, and what technologies do the corresponding shoes have to offer?

Enjoy Running Free without the Constraints of Speed or Distance

Road running takes place on paved asphalt, while trail running occurs on mountain paths. So, what exactly is gravel running?
“At Salomon, we define gravel running as running on various surfaces that include flat, uneven terrains. This encompasses gravel roads, sandy areas, off-road paths within parks, grassy fields, and cobblestones. Since it includes 'uneven terrain,' running on roads can also be considered part of gravel running,” says Taku Yamamura from the Salomon Soft Goods MD team.
So, why does Salomon promote gravel running?

“Salomon offers both trail running shoes and road running shoes. Particularly for trail running, many elite athletes choose Salomon shoes, and we provide race support.
"Competing in races, tackling long distances for the first time, taking on tough courses, and aiming to beat personal bests are all wonderful ways to enjoy running. However, we also want to promote a more relaxed approach to running, one that isn’t focused on time or competition, but allows for an enjoyable, casual experience akin to walking. That’s what gravel running represents.”

Last November, the Salomon Store Tokyo Shibuya hosted an event called Shibuya Trail for about a month after its opening. This was a photo rogaining event where participants freely visited five partner cafes around Shibuya—a perfect fit for gravel running (the store continues to hold regular group running events).

On weekend mornings, one can jog at a leisurely pace to their favorite cafes or bakeries. During business trips or travels, enjoying carefree runs and walks to explore the local area is another form of gravel running. Running along riverbanks, ascending embankments, and traversing roads to hit the trails in a favorite park are all part of the gravel running experience.

Gravel Running Shoes that Provide Comfort for Both On-road & Off-road Running

Currently, Salomon offers two models of gravel running shoes: DRX DEFY GRVL and AERO GLIDE 3 GRVL.

“The most significant difference between road running shoes and gravel running shoes lies in the outsole. Designed to perform well on both road and off-road terrains, the outsole provides high grip and is unfazed by wet surfaces or muddy conditions.
"However, unlike trail running shoes, the lugs (protrusions) are not as tall, preventing jarring impacts on hard asphalt surfaces. The joy of gravel running shoes is that they allow running freely on any surface.”

The "DRX DEFY GRVL" offers exceptional stability. It features Salomon's unique Active Chassis in the rear foot area, which provides a natural and stable ride feel, allowing the runner to confidently tackle unstable terrains.
Equipped with the Active Chassis (the white arrowhead-shaped part at the rear foot), the DRX DEFY GRVL is appealing for its high stability. Priced at 15,400 yen (tax included)
The outsole tread design is inspired by gravel bike patterns
"AERO GLIDE 3 GRVL" is a newly launched model this spring. It features a unique material called Energy Foam Evo in the midsole, which provides outstanding cushioning. With a heel height of 40mm and forefoot height of 32mm, this thick-soled model allows you to experience a bouncy, dynamic cushioning. The seamless upper fits like a glove, making long-distance running enjoyable and comfortable.
The high cushioning is a hallmark of the AERO GLIDE 3 GRVL. It uses the latest foam material in the midsole. Priced at 17,600 yen (tax included)
The outsole is designed to handle various terrains, allowing for comfortable running on both paved roads and rough surfaces.

The Recommended Shoe for On-road Runners

This time, I tried the "AERO GLIDE 3 GRVL." It is positioned as the gravel version of the "AERO GLIDE 3." I was worried that the gravel outsole might be too stiff for running on asphalt, but it turned out to be unfounded.
While running on asphalt, it felt like a road shoe with enhanced grip, and I didn't notice any harshness or jarring impact. The balance between cushioning and stability is also very good, making it quite comfortable even on roads.
I also ran on grass, dirt, and gravel roads. In off-road conditions, the traction performance of the gravel outsole really stands out. It felt like the outsole was gripping the surface, allowing for a secure running experience.

It's suitable for regular use as a road model and also great for running on trails in parks or riverbanks occasionally. It should also be a great companion for free-spirited runs while traveling. Owning a pair of Salomon's gravel shoes can broaden the enjoyment of running.
