Salomon's "ULTRA GLIDE 3" Features an Innovative Outsole that Disperses Pressure on the Foot!
Introducing the innovative trail running shoe "ULTRA GLIDE 3, designed to minimize fatigue and discomfort through its unique outsole design from Salomon. The newly shaped outsole, named relieveSPHERE, is said to disperse pressure on the foot.
What kind of shoe is it? I spoke with Taku Kariyazaki, an assistant manager at Salomon Store Tokyo Shibuya, who is also an experienced trail runner in 100-mile races.
The development of the features implemented in "ULTRA GLIDE 3" was inspired by feedback from runners participating in the world's premier trail running race, UTMB (Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc). Research conducted among finishing runners revealed that there was a demand for shoes that reduce foot strain and maintain comfort in the latter stages of the race, leading to the advancement of this development.
An Outsole with Hemispherical Depressions that Easily Absorbs Shocks
The most distinctive feature is the wavy outsole, named "relieveSPHERE," developed to reduce foot strain and pain."The shocks that occur to the foot upon landing can lead to fatigue and pain. In response, Salomon developed an outsole with strategically hemispherical cutouts in areas of high pressure based on scientific research. This unique shaped outsole distributes pressure on the foot, alleviating fatigue and discomfort.
"I personally ran on trails with shoes featuring relieveSPHERE, and I felt that fatigue built up less quickly. Some may wonder if the wavy, recessed outsole would make running difficult or feel odd, but I did not notice the shape of the sole while running."
The outsole material, Contagrip, provides excellent grip and durability across wet surfaces, dry terrains, rocky paths, and muddy trails. The midsole incorporates energyFOAM, known for its enduring superior cushioning. The stack height is 41mm at the heel and 35mm at the forefoot, with a lug height of 4.5mm, increased by 1mm from the previous model.
"The midsole has a cockpit seat-like shape with high sidewalls, allowing for high stability during downhill runs."
Combining cushioning and stability, the relieveSPHERE effectively disperses pressure on the foot. Hence, runners wearing "ULTRA GLIDE 3" can reduce damage to their legs.
An Upper that Fits Snugly & Accommodates Swelling
The patented quick lace system, combined with sensiFIT—a structural feature that securely fastens the midfoot when tightening the quick lace—offers a sensation of unity between the foot and shoe, much like many of Salomon's trail running shoes."In addition to excellent support and a comfortable fit, breathability is also a standout feature of the ULTRA GLIDE 3.
"Furthermore, the ankle area and tongue are well-padded, providing a very soft touch. The heel counter is firm, enhancing the feeling of unity between the foot and shoe."
"ULTRA GLIDE 3" Is a Comfort Model Suitable for Long Distances
A model called "S/LAB ULTRA GLIDE" has been released, which adopts a sole unit with a concept similar to that of "ULTRA GLIDE 3." The outsole of "S/LAB ULTRA GLIDE" also combines reliefSPHERE and Contagrip, but the depressions in the reliefSPHERE are slightly deeper than those in "ULTRA GLIDE 3" (though not noticeable at first glance).The midsole consists of a two-layer structure with energyFOAM and energyFOAM+. The top of the midsole features the highly responsive energyFOAM+. The upper, made from stretch material, fits softly to the foot.
"S/LAB ULTRA GLIDE" prioritizes propulsion and lightweight performance (280g, compared to 300g for "ULTRA GLIDE 3"), positioning "ULTRA GLIDE 3" as a highly supportive comfort model.
With the road racing season coming to an end and the trail racing season starting, those searching for a new companion this season should consider trying out "ULTRA GLIDE 3" and "S/LAB ULTRA GLIDE."
