The Innovation Brought by "Samsonite" to Suitcases as They Celebrate Their 115th Anniversary

2025.03.22
"Samsonite" is an iconic American suitcase brand that marks its 115th anniversary this year. Known for its lightweight and durable suitcases, it enjoys support from numerous travelers and boasts a top-tier global market share.
This time, we will focus on the "C-Lite" collection, the flagship suitcase of Samsonite, tracing the evolution of its products alongside the company's journey.

The Birth of the World's 1st Wheeled Suitcase through Innovative Product Development

Samsonite's history began in 1910 when Jesse Shwayder established the "Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company" in Denver, Colorado. The company's philosophy was to develop and manufacture trunks that could withstand any harsh journey, starting with wooden trunks.
"The first product we made was a wooden trunk called 'Samson,' decorated with metal. It embodies our philosophy, characterized by its sturdiness. The brand name 'Samsonite' originates from the birth of this product." This is what Yoshiko Eizawa from Samsonite Japan Co., Ltd. has to say.

The company continued to engage in innovative product development, incorporating cutting-edge technology and materials to match the travel styles of the era. In 1974, it released the world's first suitcase with wheels, revolutionizing the conventional understanding of suitcases by enabling more comfortable mobility.

From the Iconic "Cosmolite" to the Evolved "C-Lite" with Lighter Weight, Enhanced Maneuverability, & Usability

In 2008, "C-Lite" was born, following in the footsteps of its predecessor "Cosmolite." The shell of the Cosmolite featured a material called “Curv” known for its ultra-light weight and remarkable durability. At that time, it was the strongest and lightest suitcase in Samsonite's history, notable for its featherweight that could be lifted with just one finger, attracting significant attention from travelers.

Subsequently, to further enhance comfort and usability during travel, the Cosmolite was transformed into the C-Lite. Eizawa explains the changes made during the renewal process:
"While maintaining the shell-inspired design, we have pursued an even better user experience. Moreover, we've evolved the wheels and handles to make it more manageable than ever before. By switching from single to double wheels, we achieved smoother and more stable mobility."

"Additionally, by implementing a double handle, the maneuverability of the suitcase has improved. Inside, we included cross straps to prevent shifting, a zipper divider, and pockets for small items, designed with a clean and minimalistic interior layout, which is one of our unique features."
The C-Lite, known for its lightweight nature and excellent maneuverability, has charmed travelers worldwide and has now become a top-selling collection.

Travel Styles Vary from Person to Person

Approximately 20 years have passed since the launch of the previous Cosmolite, leading to a profound change in the functionality and design needed in suitcases. Upon inquiring about these changes, Eizawa replied:
"Travel has become increasingly accessible, and I feel the needs for lightweight suitcases, ease of storage, size and capacity preferences, as well as stylistic considerations have diversified. Furthermore, an increase in daily use of compact suitcases by travelers, not just for trips, is a significant shift.
"In light of this, we offer slightly larger options for those traveling domestically by Shinkansen who prioritize a balance between capacity and portability, in addition to sizes suitable for carry-on luggage."
As needs evolve, Samsonite's suitcases continue to progress towards being lighter and more comfortable to use. The company, in pursuit of even greater innovation, is working on developing new wheels and has already unveiled the suitcase equipped with the latest shock-absorbing and silent suspension wheels, including "EVOA Z" and "UNIMAX."

Embracing the Latest Technologies in Product Development

Samsonite commemorated its 115th anniversary by releasing a limited edition model on its founding date, March 10. They will be launching the "NEW STREAMLITE" as a reissue of the "Streamlite" released in the 1940s, and will also feature a limited color, retro blue, from the latest travel collection, "EVOA Z."

Choosing to reissue the Streamlite collection was due to its "indispensable presence in telling the history of the brand," according to Yoshiko Eizawa.
"Streamlite was one of the first collections to adopt lithographic printing, which was cutting-edge technology at the time, successfully achieving a leather-like finish. This marked the first step in reducing the weight of heavy trunks that had wooden frames covered in leather.
"The commitment to boldly incorporate the latest technologies remains a proud foundation for Samsonite. We aspire to continue being your comfortable travel partner through tough and functional products in the future."
With a focus on "lightness" and "durability," Samsonite continues to meet the evolving needs of travelers, dedicated to supporting an enriched travel experience around the globe.
