Why Does Shimano's 'ES Insulation Jacket 03' Insist on Being 'Exclusively for Fishing'?
From the mountains to the city, for work or play—the world is overflowing with outdoor apparel that can be used anywhere. But the more we chase versatility, the more a garment's original purpose is diluted and its identity is lost.
In today's world, the 'ES Insulation Jacket 03' from SHIMANO stands out with its 'exclusively for fishing' concept. From its materials and construction to its fine details, it's free of trends and marketing gimmicks. The goal was to create a cold-weather fishing jacket built with only the functions necessary for fishing.
We explore the philosophy and background behind the jacket with Tappei Fukui from the LSG Planning department at Shimano Inc.

A 100% Pure Cold-Weather Fishing Jacket, Reflecting the Voices of Anglers
The ES Insulation Jacket 03, released in September 2025, is an outerwear piece made just for anglers. The impetus for its development was the limitations of existing apparel.“The fishing environment is unique, with elements like sea spray, strong winds, humidity, and UV rays. While some anglers use general outdoor wear, it wasn't fully up to the task. So, we decided to create a cold-weather jacket exclusively for fishing, packing it only with the features essential for the sport.”

The voices of anglers were the blueprint.
“Shimano has over 200 sponsored anglers, and dozens of our most highly skilled instructors are deeply involved in the development process. They conduct on-the-water tests, and we use their feedback about any discomfort or areas for improvement to refine the product.
We then take that field feedback and cross-reference it in the lab. In addition to our in-house test facilities, Shimano works with third-party testing agencies and has the expertise to replicate fishing-specific conditions like sea spray, wind, humidity, and UV rays.
Based on this data and the issues identified on the water, we quantify features like water repellency and durability, running repeated tests to close the gap between the numerical data and the real-world feel.”
When the pros' experience is combined with meticulous testing data, the result is apparel that delivers peak performance on the water.
“The ‘03’ in the model name indicates its place in the series. The 01 is our entry-level model, while the 05 is the top-tier grade that pushes the specs to the limit. Positioned in the middle, the 03 is our standard line, offering the best balance of features and price.”

A Unique Waterproof, Breathable Material That Resists Loss of Repellency Even in Saltwater
The clearest expression of this 'exclusively for fishing' philosophy is Shimano's proprietary waterproof, breathable material, 'Dryshield+,' and its saltwater-repellent treatment.“A typical water-repellent finish is designed to bead up rain. But saltwater has a lower surface tension because of its salt and mineral content, which makes that repellency less effective. On top of that, when salt dries and crystallizes on the fabric, it inhibits the water-repellent barrier, causing the surface to wet out more easily.”

“In addition to the standard water-repellent treatment, we've made the fabric surface smoother. This helps prevent the white, chalky salt stains that appear after the fabric gets wet and dries, and it also prevents a decline in water-repellent performance.”

The surface of the material has a unique structure to it, giving it a feel of durability.
“While the stretchy materials common in outdoor apparel offer great mobility, their durability can be a concern. Fishing puts immense stress on fabric—it’s touched with wet hands, abraded by rods tucked under your arm, and exposed to salt residue. That’s why we prioritized durability for the outer shell by increasing the weave density. This also makes the fabric resistant to pilling and helps maintain its water repellency.”

Optimal Materials for Different Body Parts Provide Superior Warmth
"When you're fishing in the winter, you spend a lot of time not moving, which makes you feel the cold more acutely. That's why we increased the overall insulation and used a highly heat-retentive brushed tricot around the lower back. For winter fishing in the Kanto region, this single jacket is all you'll need."The insulation is made from a polyester material that retains its warmth even when damp and dries quickly. By using insulation mapping to strategically place more padding in areas prone to cold and just the right amount in high-movement zones, we've also ensured excellent mobility.
Detailed Craftsmanship Packed with a Fishing Tackle Maker's Expertise
At first glance, the design has a military vibe. But this isn't a case of form over function. When you actually put it on, you'll see how this design philosophy translates into freedom of movement."The 3D-cut pattern provides extra room in the shoulders and arms, allowing for smooth casting, rod handling, and the motion of raising your arms to land a fish. We also designed the silhouette with a slightly relaxed fit, so you can easily layer a fleece underneath."

Every detail reflects the expertise of seasoned anglers. The front features a D-ring for attaching gear, and there are a total of five water-resistant flap pockets on the body and sleeves. This design makes it versatile enough for a variety of settings, from inshore boat games to offshore fishing.

Inside the left chest pocket, you'll find a detachable lens cleaner for wiping your polarized sunglasses or goggles.
"While fishing, your lenses can easily get cloudy from water spray and salt. Wiping them on your sleeve can cause scratches, and fumbling for a separate cloth is a pain. That's why we attached a microfiber cleaner inside the easy-to-reach chest pocket."
Additionally, special anti-static tape is placed along the seams of the sleeves, underarms, and shoulders. This helps prevent static buildup that can make threading your fishing line a frustrating experience.

"We focused solely on the essential functions for fishing, rather than trying to make it an all-purpose jacket. We were able to hit a price point in the 30,000-yen range by stripping away any unnecessary features and design frills."
However, this jacket, honed specifically for fishing, has found an unexpectedly broader audience.
"As it turns out, more and more people are wearing it around town. Of course, it's built with function as a priority for fishing, but we felt that wasn't quite enough. We wanted to create something with a cool factor that anglers would actually want to wear. We didn't want to forget about style, even when out on the water. I think that's why it has ultimately found its way into everyday urban wear."

No matter how cold the wind or how rough the tide, it will keep you warm and won't interfere with your casting focus. Step out onto your fishing spot this winter wearing this jacket, and you'll understand just how dependable a piece of gear designed with a clear purpose can be.
