HOME⇔CAMP Philosophy Embodied: Exploring the Power of Snow Peak's "GORE-TEX Rain Jacket"
The apparel collection of Snow Peak, which began in the autumn-winter season of 2014, has garnered attention in the fashion scene for its stylish designs suitable for urban life, alongside its functionality for outdoor activities.
Among its offerings, the "GORE-TEX Rain" line, introduced in the spring-summer season of 2024, positions itself as the flagship series of rainwear for the brand.
While various rainwear options utilize GORE-TEX, what differentiates Snow Peak's from the rest? Let's check out its capabilities before the peak outdoor season.

Encounter with a New GORE-TEX Material Considerate of the Environment
We spoke with Toyokawa, who is in charge of Apparel Planning and Design."The concept of Snow Peak's apparel line is HOME⇔CAMP, meaning that our wear is comfortable and stylish whether in the city or the field.
"We previously had a strong image associated with outerwear such as down jackets, so we decided to create rainwear that would serve as the face of the brand for the spring-summer season."
The lifeline of rainwear lies in its waterproof capability. The material chosen is GORE-TEX, known as the epitome of waterproof and breathable fabrics.
"While I was satisfied with GORE-TEX's performance, I also wanted to find materials that were more environmentally friendly. During this time, I encountered a GORE-TEX Performance Shell that prioritized sustainability."

The outer fabric is made of 100% recycled 50-denier ripstop polyester. Typically, water repellency is granted using a fluorinated compound known as PFAS, but this material is processed with a non-fluorinated water repellent.
"PFAS is a general term for fluorinated compounds used in everyday products like waterproof sprays and raincoats, as well as in foam extinguishing agents and industrial abrasives and surface treatment agents. Recent concerns have arisen regarding their impact on human health and the environment."
The lining is constructed from 100% recycled 20-denier polyester tricot. By employing a dyeing method known as raw liquid coloring, significant reductions in water resource usage were achieved.
This two-fabric layer sandwiching an ePE membrane forms a three-layer structure that, while being environmentally considerate, meets GORE-TEX's stringent performance standards.

"While maintaining waterproofness, windproofness, and breathability, the comfort level has improved significantly. The use of a smooth tricot fabric for the lining, coupled with rapid evaporation of sweat vapor to the outside, ensures a long-lasting dry feel.
"In essence, this material is the ideal combination of GORE-TEX's waterproof breathability, comfort, and sustainability."
Classic Rain Jacket Enhanced by User Feedback
In the design process, user feedback was paramount."Solving the issues users face in the field is the development style of Snow Peak. This necessitates that manufacturers and users remain in close proximity and work together in creating products.
"As part of this effort, since 1998, we have hosted an event called Snow Peak Way, where staff and users can engage through camping. This event serves as a platform for gathering opinions on products and services."

The needs of users identified during the event have been incorporated into the development of this series.
For instance, the flagship piece of the series, the hard shell "GORE-TEX Rain Jacket."

"We received several complaints about water entering through the sleeves when users raised their arms during tent setup, leading to the idea of adding inner cuffs to prevent water ingress.
"However, to ensure ease of use for daily wear, we designed it to be detachable."

There are additional details that support the waterproofness of GORE-TEX.
"Full seam sealing has been employed to prevent water from entering through the stitches, ensuring complete waterproofing. Additionally, water-resistant zippers are used from the front to the chest pocket throughout."

The three-dimensional hood includes a Velcro tab for adjusting the depth of the brim, as well as a spindle designed to cover the face and head. The top loop is a thoughtful design for efficient drying when hung up.

The double-sided tape at the cuffs and the elastic spindles at both side hems not only prevent rain and wind but also allow for slight adjustments in silhouette.

The side features ventilation with water-resistant zippers, allowing for easy adjustment based on temperature and humidity.

The storage capacity is impressive. In addition to the chest pocket, there are large capacity side pockets, and there is a perfectly sized inner pocket on the right side for holding a smartphone.

The streamlined silhouette enhances mobility in outdoor settings. However, to prevent bulkiness even with mid-layers, a slight ease is incorporated.
Thanks to the three-dimensional two-piece sleeves with gussets under the armpits, arm movement is also easy.
In Both Functionality & Design, There's a Focus on Snow Peak's Character
The GORE-TEX Rain series includes not only jackets but also pants, caps, and hats.

This season, a new pullover type has been released, and the color variations have changed from black, foliage, and coyote to black, navy, and olive.

Finally, we shared the thoughts behind this series.
“There are many rainwear products that use GORE-TEX in the world. The challenge in developing this series was how to differentiate ours from the rest.
"By focusing on functional materials and details, as well as versatility that bridges everyday life and camping, and by paying attention to sustainability, we have expressed the uniqueness of Snow Peak.”
The GORE-TEX Rain Jacket stands out as a one-of-a-kind rainwear for urban dwellers who love the outdoors.
