A Regularly Released Long-selling Favorite

SOPHNET is a brand that originated from "SOPH.," which was founded in 1998. Their enduring concept of "refined everyday wear" continues to be at the core of SOPHNET's identity, reflecting the spirit of the times.
Besides SOPHNET, they've expanded fashion's possibility through innovative ventures such as the experimental label "uniform experiment," launched with Hiroshi Fujiwara, and the fictional football-inspired apparel line "F.C.Real Bristol (F.C.R.B.)."
SOPHNET, in particular, has consistently updated fashion values by actively incorporating tech fabrics and outdoor-level functionality.
Since the 2010s, they’ve quickly recognized the emerging synergy between art and fashion.
Through collaborations with renowned creatives such as contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima and UK art world heavyweight Julian Opie, SOPHNET has released unique collections and continued to evolve as a fashion brand.
Now in its 27th year, SOPHNET has maintained a perfect balance between technology and culture, practicality and aesthetics—always renewing what “refined everyday wear” means.
The Summer Wool T-Shirt is among their most consistently released and best-selling pieces.
“We don’t release this T-shirt every season, but every time it drops, it sells out. The rate of repeat buyers is especially high—many pick up more than one color. We hear feedback all the time like, ‘This season’s is awesome, too.’ Plenty of fans eagerly await every new release.”
"SOPHNET. Washable Wool Short-Sleeve," 23,100 yen (tax included)
The brand has long worked with summer wool, and in developing this piece, they researched even better wool fabrics.
In that process, they discovered the unique summer wool used for this T-shirt, which led to its creation.
"Unfortunately, the details of development weren’t recorded, but during an internal meeting, someone suggested, ‘Why not make something with a cool-feeling material?’—that’s said to be the spark that started it all.
We use 100% fine merino wool yarn and craft it with delicate jersey knitting. The silky smooth surface and lightweight, tightly knit finish are its hallmarks.
This high-quality wool shirt looks sharp but feels as easy as a T-shirt—and it’s completely machine washable at home. That’s a major selling point."

Scale-Off Processing Gives a Luxe Feel—Inside & Out

The key to its machine-washability is the special "scale-off processing." This feature is really what sets this piece apart.
Through this process, the "scale"—the tiny scaly cuticle on each wool fiber—is chemically removed, preventing the fibers from matting together, which would otherwise cause pilling and clumping.
The left shows fibers with scales; the right, fibers with the scales removed for smoother texture.
This process prevents shrinkage from washing even with wool products, making them machine-washable at home. Thanks to the reduced fuzz, the texture against the skin is smooth, achieving exceptional comfort.
"Although this is quite a delicate material, it resists deformation and wrinkling even after washing, and it's also less prone to fraying.
Depending on how often you wear and wash it, you can keep wearing it for several seasons if you put it in a laundry net and use the washing machine.
It's a favorite item among our staff, too."
You'll be surprised to learn that odor prevention has also been carefully considered. Wool naturally traps sweat and sebum inside the fibers, making it hard for bacteria to grow on the surface, so those musty, damp smells are unlikely to develop.
Additionally, the scale structure of the wool absorbs sweat components, so you can also expect it to help block unpleasant odors.
On top of that, wool knitwear is highly breathable and dries quickly—another huge plus. Especially with SOPHNET's summer wool T-shirts, the fine-gauge jersey knitting delivers even greater quick-dry performance and a refreshingly clean feel.
A subtle sheen highlights refined style
"This T-shirt features the delicate luster and soft texture unique to knit fabrics.
It exudes an elegant vibe even when worn on its own, creating the perfect dash of understated luxury—a distinctive appeal of this piece."
Staying true to the brand's theme of "sophisticated daily wear," the design is purposefully simple and straightforward.
"We've stripped away unnecessary details, pursuing a design that's both minimal and modern. The silhouette is relaxed with just the right amount of ease, ensuring a laid-back fit. When styled minimally, it leaves a sophisticated impression."
This season, the overall design is highly anonymous, with even the brand name labels absent, making the shirt more versatile than ever.
This pared-back approach—eschewing a prominent logo—speaks to the brand's confidence in the garment's comfort and functionality.
There’s a matching long-sleeve version in the same material (25,300 yen, tax included)
The main purchasers are said to be men in their late 30s to late 40s. The core fans are discerning, stylish adults who have followed the brand since its inception.
And since these pieces are suitable for any occasion—both on and off duty—it's common for customers to buy multiples at once.
Oversized ribbed details add character
"This season, we're offering five colors: light gray, light blue, navy, yellow, and black. The ribbed finish means these shirts don't just showcase the quality of the material—they can also stand out as the star of your outfit."
SOPHNET is once again emphasizing the uniquely Japanese sense of beauty known as "Iki" (粋, meaning "chic" or "sophisticated").
Matsuzawa mentions plans to focus more on "making ‘Iki’ clothing" moving forward. After all, the brand name "SOPHNET." is derived from "sophisticated," relating to ideas like refinement and polish, and by extension, carries a nuance of "Iki."
"Through the collections we create, we want to inspire more sophisticated fashion and ‘Iki’ lifestyles, enriching people's lives—even if just a little. That's the kind of brand we hope to be as we keep pushing forward," he shares.
As design and technology continue to diversify in the world of fashion, SOPHNET cherishes the traditional Japanese sense of “Iki” dandyism while continuing to deliver high-performance items that blend technology and style.
