Why Is Peripheral Vision So Clear? Optical Design of SunGod's "8KO Lens"
What dictates how well you see through sunglasses isn't just their ability to cut glare. SunGod's 8KO Lens delivers crystal-clear vision by minimizing light dispersion, chromatic aberration, and geometric distortion. How do they achieve this exceptional visual clarity? We spoke with Yosuke Nishio from the PR Section of the Product Department at Stride Co., Ltd., the official distributor in Japan, about the materials and optical design behind it.

Bringing Competition-Grade Lens Technology to Everyday Models

SunGod is a performance eyewear brand founded in the UK in 2013. By channeling feedback from top athletes and professional teams back into product development, the brand brings its advanced lens technology to everyday models as well.

8KO lenses are trusted in sports like cycling—where reading constantly changing surroundings in real time is crucial—as well as trail running and sailing. The "Classics⁴" tested here is the flagship model of the "Everyday Series," bringing this competition-proven 8KO lens technology to lifestyle frames.

Natural Colors, Effortless Clarity
Putting them on for the first time, what immediately stands out is that colors don't feel artificially boosted. The scenery looks just like it normally does, but with outlines and boundaries looking remarkably clean and sharp. What is particularly impressive is when shifting your gaze from straight ahead to the side. Distortion and blurriness are minimized even at the edges of the lens, keeping your entire field of view comfortable and focused.
The key to this effortless clarity is SunGod's proprietary "8KO Nylon Lens."
"8KO is a 2mm-thick lens made from a transparent polyamide—a nylon-based material. Compared to standard polycarbonate, it excels at minimizing light dispersion and reducing chromatic aberration," explains Nishio.

Chromatic aberration refers to the color fringing or bleeding seen along edges and outlines. By suppressing this misalignment, 8KO provides sharp vision from the center of the lens all the way to the periphery.
One key metric indicating this performance is the "Abbe number." A higher value means less light dispersion and reduced color fringing. Achieving a higher Abbe number than standard polycarbonate, it prevents image blur even when shifting your gaze to the sides.
Furthermore, SunGod has reduced "geometric distortion" caused by lens curvature and manufacturing precision. According to SunGod, their lens geometry reduces distortion by up to 70% compared to polycarbonate equivalents.

Aiming for Accurate Vision Without Overemphasizing Colors
8KO lenses prioritize visual clarity that captures actual colors as accurately as possible, without unnecessarily enhancing the scenery's colors or contrast."Some brands tune their lenses to boost color saturation. However, that kind of view can cause eye fatigue during prolonged use. It can also make it harder to recognize crucial details you need to judge accurately, such as wet road surfaces or the distance to an object."
Sunglass lenses must pass testing standards requiring them to correctly identify red, yellow, and green traffic lights. Rather than exaggerating vividness, SunGod focuses on delivering visual clarity that lets you accurately capture necessary information in real-world environments.
In short, 8KO does not aim to dramatically enhance the scenery. By minimizing unnecessary color bleeding and distortion, it delivers visual information as accurately as possible. That is precisely what SunGod considers clear vision.
Designed to Bring 8KO Lenses into Everyday Use
The aforementioned "Classics⁴" brings the optical performance of 8KO lenses to an everyday model."Most people wear sunglasses for longer in their daily lives than when playing sports. That’s why we’ve combined the same lens technology used in athletic performance with frames designed for comfortable everyday wear."
8KO polarized lenses reduce glare from reflections and block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. The frame is made from lightweight and flexible recycled TR90 material, keeping the weight down to approximately 26g.
The hinges feature a proprietary screwless design called "Pop-Lock." This prevents screws from loosening or falling out while allowing the temples to be replaced individually if needed.

Three Factors That Determine Clear Vision
How well you see through sunglasses isn't determined solely by brightness control to reduce glare. Factors such as chromatic aberration (which affects color bleeding) and geometric distortion (which impacts image accuracy) are also crucial to visual clarity.8KO lenses use a nylon-based material to minimize light dispersion and reduce chromatic aberration. Furthermore, geometric distortion caused by lens shape and molding precision is also minimized. By suppressing not only glare but also color bleeding and image distortion, the lenses achieve clear vision from the center all the way to the edge.
This level of optical performance, developed for sports where conditions change second by second, is now available in everyday models like the "Classics⁴." What dictates sunglass performance isn't just lens color or tint depth. The design of 8KO lenses demonstrates that controlling material properties, light dispersion, chromatic aberration, and distortion is what truly determines visual quality.
