Social Media Is Buzzing! Understanding the Changes in Sewing Boxes Through the Two Major Characters: "Little Bobdog" & "Home Economics Dragon"
The transformation of sewing boxes since the Heisei era has often been a topic of discussion on social media, particularly with the characters "Little Bobdog" and "Home Economics Dragon," which hold a special place in the hearts of those in their 30s and 40s.
But why were these two characters chosen as part of home economics teaching materials, and what has made them beloved for so many years? Today, the evolution of sewing boxes serves as a subject illustrating generational gaps, yet the historical background is not widely known.
We spoke with Yasuhiro Kawanaka from Sunward Co., Ltd. about the history and changes that sewing boxes have undergone since the Heisei period.

The Sewing Box, Once Unremarkable, Began to Shine in the 2000s
Regarding how each character was adopted for sewing boxes, Kawanaka shared:"Until then, Sunward had been producing characters like Little Bobdog and other fancy characters. We had already been working with textbook manufacturers for home economics, so originally, Little Bobdog was adopted for the sewing box.

"From there, we received further requests from manufacturers, leading to the birth of the Home Economics Dragon."
Thus, in 2001, "Home Economics Dragon" was born.
The dragon suddenly appeared where only unremarkable sewing boxes had existed, quickly becoming a hit among boys. It was not about choosing something out of a lack of options; instead, Home Economics Dragon ignited their desire to have it.
When I was in elementary school, there were indeed fancy character sewing boxes, but it seems there were very few designs catering to boys’ needs.
This suggests that boys did not lack preferences for sewing box designs; rather, the limited options available were the issue.
The excitement of Heisei-era boys with the emergence of Home Economics Dragon likely reflects this reality.
In fact, it is not an exaggeration to say that Home Economics Dragon is a pioneer in school materials.

Surprisingly Unknown!? The Official Story of Little Bobdog & Home Economics Dragon
Little Bobdog was created in March 1988 in Georgia, USA. This vibrant dog character, drawn with black lines, conveys a lively and pop impression.During the 80s, when fancy characters were in vogue, Little Bobdog stood out, but what led to its creation?
"At that time, there were many pastel-colored fancy characters aimed at girls.
"Against the trends of the time, the designer of Little Bobdog wanted to create a character expressed with strong lines in a monochromatic black scheme.
"It seems they believed a bold and vibrant character design was necessary as casual fashion began to take off in America."
While many may recognize the face of Little Bobdog, they might not know its name… Sunward also jokes about this character, surprisingly noting that we often encounter Little Bobdog in various ways.
"Perhaps the most famous use of Little Bobdog is in the cigarettes produced by Orion Co., Ltd.
"You can still find these being sold today, and they might be spotted in your local stores. Many people associate Little Bobdog strongly with home economics materials, but it has also been quite active in various types of math drills and more.

"In the past, it was often used on bank passbooks and appeared as a character in Hitachi's commercials, showing its surprisingly diverse presence."
Furthermore, the Home Economics Dragon has a surprisingly grand story setting. The logo of the Black Dragon, "Lourd Leger," means "heavy and light" in French, referring to gravity.
"Home Economics Dragon is depicted as a mythical creature that protects the sky empire and governs gravity. Along with its setting, the logo Lourd Leger carries the meaning of 'heavy and light.'"

Moreover, the English text found beneath the logo also supports the concept of "Home Economics Dragon."
Sometimes intellectually, sometimes playfully, stories unfold
As if by magic, everything happens
"This Black Dragon has a worldview, featuring four empires: Fire, Earth, Sky, and Water, where the strongest spirits reign and battle against each other."
It's astonishing that such an epic story, almost like a book, is illustrated on a home economics sewing box.
"Actually, the home economics dragon is part of a series, and there's also something called 'Soul of Salamander.' This series features a sewing box design where the Black Dragon and Salamander are fighting, and many people from different generations may have seen it before.
"At the time, it was incredibly popular, especially among boys, and now that those boys have grown up, they're saying it’s cool again."

Currently, the home economics dragon sewing boxes from that time are no longer for sale, but they are said to continue in new designs featuring different dragons.
Recently, a series of aprons and backpacks has emerged, keeping it relevant in school materials.
If we include designs that didn’t make it to production during the planning stages, over 50 types of dragons have been created so far.
Sunward's Characters Who Will Be Even More Active in Reiwa Era
Since last year, there has been much discussion on social media about the differences between the sewing boxes of the Heisei and Reiwa eras, with particular attention on the home economics dragon and Little Bobdog. Although the original sewing box shape has been discontinued in Reiwa, these characters are showing new developments.Recently, Sunward has released original merchandise and has begun to make an impact in unexpected fields.
"The home economics dragon exhibited at Comic Market last year and has been actively engaging in merchandise development. This year, it was transformed into a 3D character by the Kobe wrestling organization Dragon Gate, showcasing a new aspect as 'Dragon Mask Man.'
"It participated in two matches at Edion Arena Osaka and Korakuen, displaying strength by winning both."
Additionally, another popular character, Little Bobdog, is unveiling new developments. This year, an apparel line in a competition format has been confirmed, raising expectations for its future successes.
"The apparel brand over print will feature Little Bobdog illustrated by three famous illustrators, along with sweatshirts designed by winners of the contest, set to be sold in four patterns by Sunward."
Surprisingly, Little Bobdog is also making remarkable strides in China. While many in Japan may know its face but not its name, it has become a well-known character in China.
"It was broadcasted on China's version of NHK, '中国中央電視台,' as an educational program with 3D animation. There are over 50 retail locations in the region, and collaboration cafes are also being developed.
"It all started when it was featured on a diaper package. Following that, they introduced kids' products, quickly gaining popularity and becoming a staple character for children.
"We have been focusing on the Chinese market so far, but since about last year, we have been putting more effort into Japan. We want to make Little Bobdog a character loved by everyone, just like in China."
The characters of Sunward are showing new expansions beyond the realm of school materials. They have various collaborations lined up, heightening anticipation for future developments.
"There have been many requests for the revival of the original home economics dragon sewing boxes, so we'd really like to bring them back. Currently, those sewing boxes are no longer available from manufacturers, so we are considering selling a proprietary reissue. We aim to actively engage in efforts to ensure that more people can enjoy not only this character but others from Sunward as well."
The journey of these characters, intertwined with memories of the Heisei era, keeps us watching eagerly for their activities in this new era of Reiwa.
