Lighter Weight, More Propulsion! The Innovation of the Arc'teryx SYLAN 2

2026.05.19
Developed for running through the mountains with speed and comfort, the SYLAN is a signature trail shoe from Arc'teryx. It was created over a nearly three-year development period based out of the brand's footwear design center, which was established in Portland, Oregon, in 2021.
Now, after about two years, this dedicated trail running shoe from Arc'teryx has received an update. With every aspect re-evaluated based on athlete feedback, what kind of shoe has the SYLAN 2 become?
In June 2021, Arc'teryx opened its footwear design center in Portland. Under the concept of 'TRAVEL FAST & TRAVEL FAR,' the brand began developing the high-performance shoes demanded by mountain athletes.
This footwear design center, in collaboration with ARC’One—the company's proprietary factory near its Vancouver, Canada headquarters—completed the original SYLAN after extensive testing and incorporating advice from athletes.

An Evolution to Fit a Wider Range of Runners

The SYLAN 2 was designed to be even lighter and more propulsive than its predecessor. It has evolved into a versatile all-rounder that enhances speed efficiency while being suitable for a broader array of terrains and situations.
'The major updates include a weight reduction of about 20 grams, a revised rocker shape and outsole, and the inclusion of a carbon fiber-infused plate,' explains Miyuki Arai from Arc'teryx PR.
'The original SYLAN was specialized for descents, and with a strong emphasis on a rolling motion, its rocker point (where the curve begins) was positioned significantly toward the midfoot. This new model focuses more on the toe-off phase, so the rocker point is now closer to the toes than in the previous version.'
While still providing a great rolling sensation and propulsion, the shift in the rocker point—along with confining the rocker shape to the forefoot—has boosted stability, creating a shoe that suits a wider spectrum of runners and scenarios.

Featuring a Y-Shaped Carbon Fiber Plate

Inside the highly responsive foam midsole is a Y-shaped carbon fiber plate. This plate enhances both stability and propulsion. Thanks to its unique Y-shape, the shoe maintains ample cushioning and flexibility, making it easy to control and preventing any harsh feeling of being pushed upward from the ground.
It avoids the stiffness and weight often associated with plated shoes, delivering a ride so natural you might forget the plate is even there.
The upper features a specially shaped jacquard knit made from a blend of nylon, TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), and TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) to reduce weight while increasing strength. An additional TPU film boosts durability and protection.
It also retains the knit collar structure from the original SYLAN, while an updated flat-knit tongue securely supports the foot. Breathability has been enhanced to maintain comfort even during long runs.

A Meticulously Crafted Outsole

Just like its predecessor, the SYLAN 2 was developed at the footwear design center in Portland. The shoe was refined through continuous cycles of testing and modification, incorporating invaluable feedback from athletes.
The outsole features Vibram Megagrip and Vibram Litebase. Vibram Megagrip is a high-performance rubber compound that delivers unparalleled grip on both wet and dry surfaces. It's also exceptionally durable, supporting the feet of many mountain athletes.
Vibram Litebase is a technology co-designed with top global athletes and R&D teams. It enhances performance while being environmentally friendly by reducing raw material consumption. This technology slashes outsole thickness by up to 50% and total weight by 30% without sacrificing grip, traction, or durability.
Furthermore, a new design with dual-height lugs (4.5mm and 3.5mm) ensures optimal traction across a variety of terrains.
'The lug arrangement was also redesigned into a pattern that is less likely to get clogged with pebbles and mud. The outsole has evolved to provide a more comfortable run on a wider range of surfaces compared to the previous model.'
An outsole excelling in grip, durability, and light weight.

A Balanced, Confidence-Inspiring Ride

I had the chance to join a media test run event and took the "Sylan 2" for a spin on about 7km of trails in Takao. The fit was incredible—it felt like the shoe was an extension of my foot, and my first impression was fantastic.
The grip was solid even on descents, allowing me to run with confidence. On paved roads, I didn't feel any harshness or stiffness, which suggests these shoes would be a great asset in races that include road sections. With its superb balance of cushioning, stability, and responsiveness, I feel this shoe is a great fit for runners of all levels.
The powerful grip let me tackle the trails with total confidence.
For a limited time, the "ARC'TERYX TRAIL HUB TAKAO" is open at Mt.TAKAO BASE CAMP until Sunday, June 28. This is the first hub in Japan where you can actually try on and experience Arc'teryx's trail running products. You can test out the "Sylan 2" here, so if you get the chance, be sure to stop by.
