Say Goodbye to Yellowing! Tangenet’s "CHAMP T-SHIRT" Stays Bright White Like New Even After Dozens of Wears
If you keep wearing your favorite plain white T-shirt, the color eventually changes. Many of us have experienced this.
So are T-shirts simply consumable items? When it comes to tangenet, the answer is "no".
The brand’s CHAMP T-SHIRT uses a special fabric and processing method that make it both stain-resistant and less prone to yellowing.
This almost magical T-shirt, which stays white like new for ages—how was it created? The brand’s designer, its creator, shares the story behind its birth.

Brand Concept: Blending Western & Japanese Elements

Tangenet was established in 2021 by designer Mitsuru Yoshiya.
"The brand name is a coined word from tangent, gene, and network. Our philosophy is to deliver the technology and DNA of Japanese materials through manufacturing made possible by connecting people at different points."
Before starting the brand, Yoshiya worked at a major apparel company as a designer for a men’s brand.
"During my time there, I traveled all over Japan each season, exploring production areas and engaging in different aspects of making things. That experience convinced me that the quality of Japanese textiles is world-class. One of our brand’s missions is to introduce the strengths of Japanese craftsmanship through clothing."
High-Density Jersey Material That Resists Losing Shape
The "CHAMP T-SHIRT" released the same year the brand was established, put Tangenet on the map. Why was he so drawn to plain white T-shirts in the first place?
"I’ve always had a thing for plain white T-shirts. They’re a timeless classic and look great on everyone, regardless of age or gender.
But no matter how much I love one, after a season or two, the yellowing and stains bother me, and I end up tossing it out.
Among all clothing, plain white T-shirts probably have the shortest life cycle. I wanted to make one that people could wear for a long time. That’s what inspired this item."
The "CHAMP T-SHIRT" truly embodies Japanese craftsmanship.
"For the body, we use fabric made by Hironen Co., Ltd., a textile manufacturer from Fukui Prefecture.

"Most T-shirts use single-knit jersey, but this one uses a double-knit jersey called 'mock lody.'
"Hironen specializes in finely knit double jersey, and the high-density fabric they produce is tough, resists losing its shape, and is even used for jackets and pants."

The reason for the durability also lies in a special polyester yarn.
"To enhance the strength and shrinkage stability, we blend polyester with cotton.
We use Toray’s 'T400,' a highly stretchy polyester yarn, which gets compressed with heat during finishing. This process improves shape retention, so it hardly twists or stretches out of shape during washing."
A Fusion of Opposing Fabric Finishing Technologies: "Repelling" & "Absorbing"
So, how did Tangenet achieve the all-important long-lasting white?Yoshiya asked for help from Tokai Senko K.K., headquartered in Aichi Prefecture.
"Tokai Senko is renowned domestically for its advanced fabric finishing technologies. Working together with their technical experts, we spent about a year and a half developing this specially processed fabric."
The secret behind its staying bright is a revolutionary hybrid treatment.
"We combine two seemingly contradictory processes: water repellency and absorbency. The water-repellent process helps keep not just water, but also sebum and food stains from getting into the fibers."
During development, Yoshiya himself repeatedly ran tests—spilling soy sauce, chili oil, and sauce on the shirt, then washing it and refining the finish each time.

On the other hand, water-absorbing treatment is essential when it comes to yellowing.
"When sweat and sebum soak deep into the fabric, it becomes difficult to remove even with washing, and over time this leads to yellowing. However, this fabric prevents sweat and sebum from penetrating the fibers with a water-repellent finish, while its water-absorbing finish ensures that everything washes out cleanly with water during laundering."
There's also evidence to support this resistance to yellowing.
"We had a third-party agency that investigates fabric properties perform tests for the degree of discoloration and so on.
In a test called the Yellowing Method, where fabric is forcibly yellowed by exposure to light, it was determined to have a resistance to yellowing equivalent to sportswear made from high-tech materials."
The hybrid finishing also brings benefits to comfort.
"If the fabric was only water-repellent, even sweat would be repelled and the fabric wouldn't absorb it. This results in sweat staying on your skin, causing stickiness and discomfort due to stuffiness.
But since this fabric is also processed to absorb moisture, it maintains a light, comfortable feel."
A Horizontal Shoulder Seam Inspired by Kimono
The CHAMP T-SHIRT is, above all, a "fashion item"."When it comes to design, from silhouette to details, I embodied my own ideals."
The idea was inspired by Champion's T-shirts produced in the 1950s.
"Champion's T-shirts from this era were generally characterized by wide armholes and a straight, level shoulder line rather than a sloped one.
This was a feature designed to increase range of motion in the arms, but this design resonates with the kimono, which I love. I felt a real sense of affinity."

Essences of the kimono are scattered throughout the design.
"I wanted to preserve the feeling of draping a garment as with a kimono, so I made both the arm width and body width wide, and also created straight lines for the shoulder seam, sleeves, and body, following the kimono's pattern."

When you make the shoulder seam level, the amount of fabric at the shoulders increases. As you wear it, this fabric drapes onto the body, creating a uniquely kimono-like drape. For that reason, it exudes a distinctive presence—hardly what you’d expect from a plain white tee.
"I aimed for a T-shirt that would look picture-perfect on its own. Personally, I like to tuck the hem into my pants and let it blouse slightly."

Since its launch, sales have steadily increased, and some years it has sold out before summer even arrived.
It’s highly regarded in the fashion industry and beloved by many stylists, buyers, and editors.
"Fabric production is in Fukui Prefecture, sewing is done in Tokushima, and finishing is carried out in Gifu. Moreover, because the fabric itself is rare, mass production isn't possible, but we've sold over 1,000 pieces so far. The repeat purchase rate is high, too—there are customers who have ordered five times from our official online shop."

Another great thing about the "CHAMP T-SHIRT" is how long you can wear it.
"We conducted an experiment where we wore and washed it 70 times over roughly two months, but noticed no significant changes.
If you wear it once a week, that means it would last more than 70 weeks. If you wear it once a week for about five months of the year, that’s about 20 weeks, so it should hold up for about three years. Of course, this depends on the situation and how much you sweat, so it's just a reference, but I hope you'll try it and feel the difference yourself."
Rather than chasing fleeting trends, many want to cherish their favorite clothes for years to come. The "CHAMP T-SHIRT" fulfills just that ideal for adults who value quality and longevity.
