For Over Half a Century of Crafting Travel Bags, Tough Traveler Stays Committed to "Made in USA"
Since its founding in 1970, the bag brand "Tough Traveler" has stayed true to its "Made in USA" commitment in a small town in New York State. While boasting a solid history of craftsmanship spanning over half a century, it also creates playfully unique products, such as peanut-shaped bags and ultra-thin fanny packs.
In Japan, BLUEMOON COMPANY Inc. handles its distribution, drawing attention with items that combine classic American durability with distinctive designs that fit seamlessly into modern fashion.
We spoke with Yusuke Tashita, Deputy Director of the Merchandising Department at BLUEMOON COMPANY, about Tough Traveler's history, its expansion in Japan, and its longstanding commitment to craftsmanship.
Relaunching in Japan After a 4-to-5-Year Hiatus
In 1970, Tough Traveler was founded in Schenectady, New York—a small town rich in nature. Built on the concept of "making great products for going on trips," it is a bag brand that has adhered strictly to "Made in USA," carrying out everything from design to manufacturing within the United States for over half a century.BLUEMOON COMPANY began working with the brand as its Japanese distributor about 10 years ago. Focusing primarily on American imported brands, BLUEMOON COMPANY saw mini pouches and sacoches gain popularity in Japan. However, right before the COVID-19 pandemic, business was temporarily paused, resulting in a hiatus of about four to five years.
Then, in 2026, the company decided the time was ripe to relaunch Tough Traveler in Japan. Re-evaluating the brand's lineup for this fresh start, Tashita discovered exciting new possibilities.
"When we looked at Tough Traveler again after the break with plans to restart, I realized they had quite a few fascinating items in their lineup. For example, their fanny packs aligned well with current trends, and mini body bags received a great response from buyers."

Unique Shapes Born from Low-Tech Craftsmanship
As Tashita describes as "fascinating," many of Tough Traveler's main products currently featured in Japan delightfully subvert the brand's former classic image with their unique designs.Leading the lineup is the "PEANUT SLING BAG," which catches the eye with its distinctive peanut-pod-like shape. This single-shoulder mini backpack commands an impressive presence despite its simple design. Meanwhile, the ultra-thin fanny pack "CELL BELT," designed with the running trend in mind, embraces a remarkably minimalist approach—holding little more than a smartphone and a few cards.
Adding to its playful spirit, the pouch comes in two formats: the wide "Horizontal" and the tall "Vertical."

These distinctive products are by no means mere gimmicks. They reflect the brand's unwavering commitment to craftsmanship—creating what they truly want to make without being swayed by trends. According to Tashita, Tough Traveler still has in-house designers who continue to experiment with new ideas daily.
"I don't think the creators themselves are thinking at all about whether something will be a hit in Japan right now. We simply select items from their vast lineup, or occasionally propose custom orders. They keep pushing boundaries using completely low-tech methods with sewing machines rather than relying on high-tech processes. That philosophy is what makes them so intriguing."
Products born from this background feel somehow nostalgic yet fresh. Their bold, characterful designs strike today's Japanese market as a novel and compelling charm.

Over 50 Years of Staying True to Made in USA
Tough Traveler's unique creativity is supported by an unwavering commitment to "Made in USA" that has remained unchanged since its founding. The factory started by founder Marc Goldstein remains rooted in its birthplace of Schenectady, continuing production while employing local residents, maintaining a classic family-owned style. This commitment extends to every detail of their products. The fabrics used are American-made packcloth nylon and CORDURA® nylon. Including components like YKK zippers, an impressive 95% of their materials are made in the USA.
"Their commitment to being Made in USA is remarkably strong. At a time when many brands are moving production overseas through licensing, sticking to their guns shows true strength of purpose."
As Tashimo notes, this craftsmanship is highly revered. In 2019, the brand was invited to the White House to represent New York State at the "Made in America Product Showcase"—a point of immense pride for the brand.
After the founder's wife ran the business, her passing led to a hiatus of several years. Later, their daughter, Amber Goldstein, took over the business. This soul of craftsmanship passed down across two generations is the true source of Tough Traveler's inimitable appeal.

Fans in Japan Are Waiting
Tough Traveler officially resumed full-scale distribution in Japan in July 2026. However, the market environment is hardly a tailwind. Due to a record-weak yen, many peers are pulling out of the U.S. import business.Even so, BLUEMOON COMPANY continues its efforts simply because it believes in Tough Traveler's timeless value. Rather than chasing short-lived trends, they are seeing a genuine response by thoughtfully communicating the brand's long-cultivated philosophy and background.
"Within our company, we've shifted our message to emphasize how much we value our history of continuing to offer imported brands like this. As a result, an increasing number of buyers are listening passionately to Tough Traveler's story, leading to exciting conversations. Leading regional select shops have often renewed their business with us as if saying 'We've been waiting for this!', reassuring us that our direction is right."
That value is steadily reaching select shops nationwide and stores where the owner's keen eye shines. In an era where efficiency and trends are often prioritized, Tough Traveler's honest and earnest approach to craftsmanship is inspiring new resonance.
A Brand Passed Down from Parent to Daughter
More than half a century has passed since its founding. That craftsmanship has been faithfully passed down from founder Marc Goldstein to his daughter, Amber. Rather than chasing trends, they continue to make what they genuinely believe is good—an attitude that can sometimes appear uncompromising. However, the timeless value and unique character born from such honest craftsmanship transcend eras and borders. Facing the headwinds of a weak yen, Tough Traveler's new chapter in Japan is just getting started.
