A Touch of Refined Quirkiness Within Sophisticated Sensibility—Introducing UN+BA, an up-and-Coming Footwear Brand From Tokyo.

2026.05.29
Meet UN+BA, an up-and-coming shoe brand hailing from Tokyo. The brand name, short for "un-basic," is built on the concept of "A touch of refined quirkiness for a sophisticated sensibility—new footwear for those who love fashion."
Now in its second year, the brand is gaining serious traction as a next-generation force in footwear. We sat down with the UN+BA brand manager to get the scoop, focusing on the UN HIKER, a hybrid sandal that's a must-watch for this spring and summer.

First, let's dive into how UN+BA got its start.
"When we launched UN+BA, we were driven by keywords like 'We don't need the ordinary,' and 'The word "different" is surely a compliment.' This philosophy applies to style, values, and sensibilities.
The UN+BA project was born from a desire to craft products with a heightened sensibility, aiming for a coolness in footwear that goes beyond just the specs.
It feels less like we're running a brand and more like we're 'driving the UN+BA project.' As part of that, our current focus is on shoes.
When UN+BA was starting out, the design team overseeing product development proposed, 'We want to create items that are all about the Vibram® sole.' That's where our product creation began.
The first model we launched was the 'UN T-TOE,' based on the German Trainer. What's most distinctive is how we attached the statement-making Vibram® sole.
We used an outsole material called 'Wraptrek' in a way that wraps around the shoe. We intentionally leave on the excess material that would normally be cut off, creating a unique look where the sole envelops the shoe.
In our first collection, we rolled out a variety of styles using this Wraptrek technology, including the 'UN GUMP' and 'UN PENNY.'
This sole construction is so unique that even the representative from Vibram told us, 'I've never seen anything like this,' and it has become one of the brand's signature details."

Redefining the Sandal: The UN HIKER

Unveiled as the first item of 2026, the UN HIKER is the hybrid sandal grabbing the spotlight this spring and summer. We got the inside scoop on its design and details.

"The first thing you notice is the striking cover attached to the upper. It's made from Dyneema® fiber, which boasts world-class strength and lightness.
The color options are also a key feature. They come with a set of three covers: one set combines a black base with cool tones like blue and green, while the other pairs black with warm tones like yellow and orange.
This allows you to enjoy swapping them out to match your mood or style for the day. What's more, the cover is designed as a dual-layer pocket, so you can even store small items inside."
Other color variations
"Remove the cover, and you have a design based on Gurkha sandals, offering breezy comfort even in the height of summer. Plus, the heel strap is detachable, making it a 2-way design.
On top of that, since you can swap the upper covers, the number of potential style combinations is immense. You can even use different colors for the left and right foot, offering a level of creative freedom so vast you'll lose count of the possibilities."

The Vibram® Sole: The Core of UN+BA

UN+BA's commitment to the Vibram® sole is strongly reflected in the UN HIKER. We continued our conversation, shifting focus to the sole.
"It features our original cushioned cup insole and the durable, chunky 'Vibram® DECEMBER' outsole.
This sole was developed for urban hiking, so it's lightweight with fantastic grip, and I believe its walking performance is absolutely top-notch. The comfort that comes from this sole paired with our original insole is something we truly want people to experience firsthand."

The 'UN TOUGH VB': An Unconventional Loafer That's "All Vibram®"

Here, we'll introduce UN+BA's latest creation. Earlier, we mentioned their desire to "create items with a focus on Vibram® soles," and you'd be hard-pressed to find another product that takes this focus to such an extreme.
"This is our loafer-style model, the 'UN TOUGH VB,' for which we've done something pretty 'wild': using the same rubber material found in Vibram® soles for the upper part of the shoe.
This project has been in the works since the brand first launched, but because we were using a rubber material not meant for uppers, we ran into a number of challenges during production. After a lot of trial and error, we finally managed to bring the product to life.
We've always talked about wanting to 'craft products with a deep focus on Vibram®,' but I believe there's no other brand that puts Vibram® at the forefront to this extent.
That's exactly why, as a brand that champions the 'un-basic,' we felt that if we were going to do this, we wanted to 'be as playful as possible.' That spirit led to the creation of this shoe.
Using Vibram®'s rubber material for the upper is unique enough, but we've paid just as much special attention to the sole.
The sole, with its eye-catching marble pattern, features 'Ecostep Recycle.' This is an eco-friendly compound made with a minimum of 30% scrap material generated during production. In addition to its environmental benefits, it offers the superior grip of Megagrip."

Product shot
While they have a strong presence, they never become 'fashion noise.' These products, born from an 'un-basic' sense of play, appeal to our desire for self-expression through fashion—the more you look at them, the more you wear them.
And perhaps that is the very essence of UN+BA's appeal.
Currently, the brand is available at cutting-edge select shops in Japan, but they plan to create more opportunities for customers to connect with them. They're eager to host pop-ups and events, allowing people to experience the products firsthand and have a more engaging and passionate shopping experience.
The name UN+BA also embodies the concept of being 'unfinished,' not just 'un-basic.' This reflects their vision to move beyond being just a shoe brand, aiming to express the world of UN+BA from multiple perspectives by crossing into genres like music and art.
With its commitment to craftsmanship fueled by experimental ideas and inventiveness, UN+BA is poised to become an innovator, bringing a fresh and exciting energy to the fashion scene.
