Uniqlo's "Round Ultra Mini Bag" Is a Social Media Sensation: Unpacking the Big Features in a Tiny Package

2025.11.25
First ignited by international influencers, Uniqlo's Uniqlo “Round Mini Shoulder Bag” became a global sensation, even earning the nickname “the Millennial Birkin.” Now, an even more compact version, the “Round Ultra Mini Bag,” has dropped and is already blowing up on social media.
Why did this bag become such a massive hit? We sat down with Masahiro Otomo, Men's MD Team Leader in the Product Division at Uniqlo Co., Ltd., to get the inside scoop on its development, features, and the secret behind its viral success.

While the “Round Ultra Mini Bag” is making waves as a new release, it actually made its debut last October. It was an exclusive promotional item given away for the grand opening of the Shinjuku flagship store.
“Mini bags were trending, so we thought it would be fun and create some buzz if we made a smaller version of the Round Mini Shoulder Bag,” Otomo explains.
The response, however, was overwhelming. Inundated with customers asking, “Where can I buy that bag?” the company rushed it into production. But this was no mere shrink-job; the bag is packed with clever design details.

Deceptively Spacious: Practicality in a Compact Form

The first standout feature is its storage capacity. Mini bags are often more of an accessory, with storage being an afterthought. This bag, however, puts practicality front and center.

“From the start, we planned to give it enough space for a smartphone plus a small water bottle or a compact folding umbrella,” he says. “But just shrinking the ‘Round Mini Shoulder Bag’ would have made the gusset too small. We had to experiment to see how small we could go while still ensuring practical storage.”

Versatile by Design: A Social Media Styling Sensation

Unlike the original “Round Mini Shoulder Bag,” which had a fixed strap, this new model features a detachable one, a choice made “with the trend of using mini bags like charms in mind.”
This simple change, combined with the bag’s compact size, opened up a world of styling possibilities. While Uniqlo designed it as a 2-way bag to be worn over the shoulder or carried as a handbag, users have taken to social media to showcase their own creative hacks. People are using it as a pouch inside a bigger bag, attaching it to a matching “Round Mini Shoulder Bag” for a cute “mom-and-kid” look, or clipping it onto a belt loop. This freedom to personalize has only fueled its popularity.
Remove the shoulder strap, and it becomes a croissant-shaped handbag.
Another factor setting this bag apart from typical mini bags is its significant popularity among men.
“The original ‘Round Mini Shoulder Bag’ also sold extremely well with men in Europe,” Otomo notes. “Looking at it from the customer’s viewpoint, the basic design is definitely unisex. It made me realize it all comes down to marketing. That’s why, for this version, we intentionally chose a gender-neutral color palette to appeal to a broader audience. In fact, we're even hearing from guys who typically hate carrying bags that they're willing to use this one, saying, ‘I can carry this one.’ But honestly, I never imagined it would be supported by so many people.”
Available in six color variations.

Eco-Conscious Material: Recycled Nylon with a Premium Feel

The commitment to detail extends beyond aesthetics and size to the very material of the bag. As part of its environmental efforts, Uniqlo opted for recycled nylon.
The design focused on a textured feel that's perfect for casual use.
“At Uniqlo, we believe in using recycled materials in all our products whenever possible,” Otomo states. “The original Round Mini Shoulder Bag was made from virgin nylon, which was praised for its unique texture that helped hide dirt. We took on the challenge of recreating that same feel with recycled nylon and finally developed a material that worked. We were able to make a complete switch starting with the 2024 Fall/Winter collection.”
Recycled materials are typically more expensive than their virgin counterparts. Yet, what's truly remarkable is that Uniqlo managed to keep the bag at the accessible price point of 1,290 yen (incl. tax).
The recycled material is also treated with a water-repellent finish that can handle light rain.
"We aimed for this price point from the get-go, so striking the perfect balance between cost and functionality was a huge challenge. For instance, a fixed strap would have meant fewer metal parts, making it cheaper to produce. But we wanted it to be versatile for everyone, so we couldn't cut that corner."
Even with its smaller size, the manufacturing cost is nearly the same as our previous bags. That's why the development team meticulously identified every possible area for cost reduction and made continuous improvements. Every detail was carefully considered, from arranging the pattern pieces to minimize fabric waste to simplifying the sewing process to cut down on steps.
"While many companies probably do something similar, the Uniqlo way is to have our planning, factory, production, and design teams all commit as one cohesive unit to make it happen."
Its affordable price point has made it a hit, with people loving how 'easy it is to try,' helping the Round Mini Shoulder Bag win over fans of all ages and genders. This little bag is packed with thoughtful details that continue to attract new admirers every single day. Behind its success lies Uniqlo's core development philosophy: the relentless pursuit of technology that makes everyday life better.
