Why Change Materials by Body Part? The Sweat-Wicking, Quick-Drying Design Achieved by Welter Experiment

2026.08.14
This past April, Korean outdoor brand Welter Experiment made its official debut in Japan. Among its wide lineup of products, this article focuses on the "Hydrafuse Mesh T-Shirt." It is a high-performance tee featuring a complex panel structure that strategically places different fabrics across specific areas based on body heat and sweat levels.
Why was such an intricate design necessary? We spoke with Executive Director Minda Chang about the design philosophy embedded in its materials, structure, and stitching.

An Up-and-Coming Outdoor Brand Based in Seoul, South Korea

Welter Experiment is an outdoor brand established in Seoul, South Korea, in 2021. Developing a wide array of apparel that seamlessly bridges harsh natural environments with modern urban life, the brand has grown to boast domestic sales of 1.5 billion won (approximately 150 million yen).
"We have gained strong support, particularly from users in their 30s who demand both functionality and refined design. Every member of our development team is an outdoor enthusiast, and we have always strived to create clothes that we 'truly want to wear' ourselves."
So says Executive Director Minda Chang. The "Hydrafuse Mesh T-Shirt" highlighted here was born from that exact desire to make something the creators themselves wanted to wear. It stands as a culmination of the technologies the brand has cultivated over the years.

"While our brand offers a wide range of T-shirts, this item is positioned as our flagship model with the highest level of functionality. It took about a year from concept to completion, enduring a painstaking process of trial and error as we repeatedly crafted samples and field-tested them during actual trail runs and hikes."
At its core, its functionality comes down to one thing: a complex panel structure. It meticulously combines fabrics of various weaves and shapes tailored to different areas of the body.

Each Body Part Has Its Own "Climate"

The primary material is polyester, which is lightweight, quick-drying, and highly breathable. Using polyester yarn, panels with different knit patterns and shapes are positioned across each body section.
The back of the "Hydrafuse Mesh T-Shirt." It clearly shows how fabrics of various shapes are joined together across the shoulder blades, sleeves, back, and underarms.
"We designed this T-shirt around the concept of 'climate mapping.' Different parts of the human body produce different amounts of sweat. Carrying a backpack also traps heat around the shoulders and back. In other words, each part of the body has its own 'climate,' and our approach is to map the optimal fabric to match that climate."
Driven by this concept, a highly breathable mesh knit fabric was placed in high-sweat areas like the underarms and heat-trapping areas around the shoulder blades. The fabric panels trace intricate lines tailored precisely to each zone.
Mesh fabric is positioned in areas prone to high sweating and heat buildup.
"Rather than simply placing mesh in random spots, we developed it by actually wearing the shirt and making fine adjustments to the positioning step by step. We believe this unique layout and experience-based development process are our greatest strengths."

Sewing Technology Supporting Ultimate Comfort

However, a panel structure—combining multiple distinct fabrics—inevitably increases the number of seams. In turn, that means more potential friction points against the skin.
Especially during long trail runs or hikes, discomfort from chafing seams leads directly to fatigue. To solve this issue, the brand adopted a stitching technique known as 'flat seaming.'
Although there are seams across various areas like the neck, sleeves, underarms, and hem, the use of flat seams ensures a smooth, comfortable feel against the skin.
"By using flatseam stitching with a 4-needle machine, we minimize the thickness where fabrics overlap. This sewing technique was essential to reduce stress and discomfort on the skin as much as possible."
Furthermore, the design embodies the brand's core philosophy of simplicity. Color options are streamlined to just two colors—gray and black—with minimal decoration. Reflective materials are used for the two-line brand logo on the chest and hem, as well as the text print on the back, enhancing night visibility and safety while serving as a subtle accent to the minimal design.
Reflectors are used for the brand marks and logos, keeping design elements to a minimum
"I believe our identity shines through in the silhouette as well. We avoided the oversized look popular in street fashion, yet didn't go for a body-hugging tight fit either. Instead, we pursued a balanced silhouette with just the right amount of room."
High-performance materials, exceptional comfort, simple design, and an exquisite silhouette. The "Hydrafuse Mesh T-Shirt" seamlessly fuses these multiple elements at a high level.

High Praise from Users Who Have Worn It

Although designed primarily for outdoor use, the refined aesthetic of the "Hydrafuse Mesh T-Shirt" makes it perfectly suitable for everyday wear in urban life.
"It's ideal not only for trail running and hiking, but also for city runs and gym workouts. It also works great as an undershirt during your daily commute or as casual wear on weekends. Ultimately, its defining charm lies in its versatility across any setting."
Users who have worn the "Hydrafuse Mesh T-Shirt" are already giving it high marks, sharing reviews like "outstanding comfort," "stays comfortable even on hot days," and "looks natural whether worn as outdoor gear or streetwear."
The softness of the material itself and the relaxed silhouette also contribute to its comfortable wearability
While its full-scale rollout in the Japanese market has just begun, its design philosophy holds immense potential to resonate strongly with the domestic outdoor scene. Behind this lies the brand's core mindset: "craftsmanship designed with climate change in mind."
"Due to the impact of climate change, a global polarization seems to be progressing where summers become even hotter and winters grow increasingly severe. We must constantly update our manufacturing expertise to adapt to these environmental shifts. Moving forward, we plan to sequentially develop higher-performance, lightweight, and highly breathable products."
As the environment surrounding outdoor activities evolves due to climate change, Welter Experiment continues to pursue manufacturing that adapts to these shifts. Born from the concept of "climate mapping"—placing materials according to heat and sweat levels across different parts of the body—the "Hydrafuse Mesh T-Shirt" is an item that truly symbolizes this philosophy.
