The Keyword Is Off-Court: Wearing the Sports Brand 'Wilson' Casually

2026.02.09
With a legacy spanning over a century of contributions to the world of sports, Wilson is a global athletic brand.
While best known as a sports brand, Wilson is also beloved as daily wear, thanks not only to its functional quality but also its versatility and sophisticated designs.
We sat down with Yuki Saito, the Marketing Manager for Wilson Racket Sports & Soft Goods at Amer Sports Japan Inc., to discuss Wilson's roots, the brand's charm, and her recommendations for items that can be worn as everyday apparel.

Wilson's 100+ Year History: From its Origins to Today

"Wilson was founded in Chicago, USA, in 1913. It has a rather unique history, initially starting as a meatpacking company that used by-products from its meat processing business to manufacture leather goods, balls, and gloves. From there, it gradually began to specialize in sporting goods.
Today, we produce high-performance sporting goods for a wide array of sports like tennis, baseball, basketball, American football, and golf. We have also expanded our lineup to include apparel, footwear, and accessories."

"As a global leading brand today, we are proud to hold the number one market share worldwide in four sports: tennis, basketball, baseball, and American football.
Wilson products are the official balls for the NBA in basketball and the NFL in American football. In the baseball world, including MLB, we also have the top market share for bats and gloves. Wilson continues to lead the world in its share of sporting goods across these four categories.
In particular, I believe Wilson is a brand strongly associated with tennis. Wilson is the No. 1 brand used by the world's top 100 players, and the most widely used racket among athletes is also a Wilson.
Additionally, we are the official ball supplier and official stringer for the French Open and the US Open. World-renowned tennis players like Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori have also long favored Wilson rackets.
Wilson announced that in January 2026, it will sign comprehensive contracts—covering everything from apparel to shoes, not just rackets—with top tour players, including current world No. 6 Alex de Minaur. While the image of Wilson is deeply tied to tennis rackets, we are now focusing on boosting the recognition of our apparel and footwear. I believe these factors have all contributed to the strong 'Wilson equals tennis' perception."

Wearing Wilson Casually: The Keyword is 'Off-Court'

Having explored the brand's history and current direction, let's now turn our attention to how you can enjoy Wilson as a fashion statement. We'll start by introducing some of the brand's classic items.
"To explain the concept behind Wilson's apparel, we think in terms of 'on-court' for what players wear during a match, and 'off-court' for apparel that can be worn right after. With these keywords, we are developing tennis-centric sportswear.
While what constitutes a 'classic item' has changed over time, pieces featuring Wilson's traditional logo are always part of our lineup. This hoodie, inspired by a classic design, is a remarkably well-constructed piece, featuring heavyweight fabric and a three-dimensional embroidered logo.
This piece was designed in Los Angeles and is made from USA cotton. It's a versatile item that's easy to style for any occasion, whether you're on or off the court."

"We also have sweatpants that were likewise designed in Los Angeles and made from USA cotton. The product is called the 'Jogger.' It combines comfort and style, with a subtle embroidered 'W' serving as a nice accent. We also recommend wearing them as a set with the hoodie mentioned earlier or with the crewneck from the same series."

Classic Designs Fused with Modern Technology

Having showcased Wilson's iconic staples, we now turn our attention to this season's lineup.
"The US design team explains that for this season's design work, they're reviving pieces by delving into the brand's century-plus history and infusing them with modern technology.
By blending the simplicity of the 1990s with the dramatic shifts in the 2000s fashion scene—think colors, textures, and patterns—and pairing these elements with cutting-edge technology, they have crafted a top-tier collection.
Wilson's apparel features technology that merges the evolutions happening in both sports and fashion. It delivers peak performance while being so comfortable and stylish you'll want to wear it every day. We call this 'Stealth Technology.' A perfect piece to showcase this is the 'Biltmore Cable Polo' from our collection.
This polo shirt blends a classic cable-knit design with modern functionality. It's crafted from a quick-drying, stretchable material for all-day comfort, making it a timeless piece that perfectly balances style and performance."

A Tote for City Life, with Room for a Racket

Let's also spotlight another item that merges functionality with classic design.
"This tote bag features a classic design inspired by center court, with the inscription 'Playing center court since 1914.' to evoke a sense of heritage. It's easy to integrate into your daily routine and is sized to accommodate a tennis racket.
While not intended for serious competition, it's designed as a perfect accessory for a casual game of tennis."
