Their collaboration partner, Alpha Industries, was founded in 1959 in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is a historic military wear brand with a long track record of manufacturing flight jackets like the MA-1, M-65, and N-3B based on strict MIL-SPEC (military specifications) and supplying them to the U.S. Department of Defense for many years.
"Its products possess absolute reliability and a sense of security backed by history. Our entire team was thrilled to be able to work with them on a joint creation."

Fusing the Details of Two Flight Jacket Models
The decision to create an MA-1 was driven by the project members' strong desire. Developed in the 1950s for U.S. Air Force pilots, the short-length jacket features a lightweight nylon body, an insulated structure for warmth, and an orange lining for visibility during rescue missions. This utilitarian military outerwear, which supported pilots through the Cold War era, eventually became widespread in the fashion scene."The MA-1's popularity has seen a resurgence on the streets in recent years, and the biggest reason for this is the strong association people have between Alpha Industries and the MA-1.
It's also a staple outerwear piece that we feature in our own collections every season. However, to be precise, the base for this piece is actually the CWU-45/P."
The CWU-45/P is a flight jacket developed in the 1970s as the successor to the MA-1.
It is characterized by its flame-retardant aramid nylon shell and slanted flap pockets on the body—in other words, it can be described as an evolution of the MA-1, brushed up to be tougher and more functional.
In this collaboration, while using the CWU-45/P as a base, iconic elements of the MA-1 have been incorporated throughout.

When you actually try it on, you'll immediately notice that it's significantly lighter than a typical MA-1.
"For the outer shell, we used high-density, water-resistant nylon. By omitting the inner padding, we've achieved a lighter feel, creating a piece that can be worn across different seasons."

The silhouette has been reconstructed with pattern-making unique to White Mountaineering. The arms are three-dimensionally designed for better range of motion, and while the body has a moderately roomy fit, the length is not too short, creating a modern balance.
"While retaining the ruggedness of a flight jacket, we've refined the silhouette to blend in naturally with urban streetwear."
Detailed Work Pursuing Functional Beauty
Military wear can be described as a collection of functional details. This model is no exception, with arrangements made down to the finest points.
While the CWU-45/P has a folded, shirt-style collar, this piece adopts the ribbed knit stand-up collar seen on the MA-1. The Velcro name patch panel, for attaching rank insignias and unit patches, has also been changed to a vertically oriented leather version, giving it a more stylish impression.

"We've also added vertical zip pockets to both sides of the chest, a signature detail of White Mountaineering."
The oversized zip pockets not only create a striking design element but also work with the angled body pockets to offer storage capacity rivaling that of a bag.
Of course, the iconic utility pocket on the left arm, a hallmark of the MA-1, remains. This pocket was originally designed for pilots to store pens and small tools within the confines of a narrow cockpit.

The signature Alpha Industries red "Remove Before Flight" tag on the sleeve has been reimagined in black, and the large zipper pull tab is also finished in a unified matte black.
Moreover, while the standard MA-1 lining is a vivid orange, this version features a black lining to enhance its sharp image, expressing a duality of ruggedness and sophistication through its color palette.

While White Mountaineering has collaborated with numerous brands over the years, this project was said to be particularly stimulating.
"Because Alpha Industries is a brand that has consistently produced authentic gear, we felt a sense of conviction in every single component. We focused on how to layer our philosophy of 'fusing practicality, functionality, and design' without compromising the genuine aura that lives in those details."
Aiming for "Apparel that Provides a Sense of Security"
"We wanted to give this MA-1 a significance that goes beyond just being an outerwear piece," says Otawa."In this era of diversifying values, I believe people are drawn to 'clothing that provides a sense of security.' By daring to reinterpret the MA-1, which is already a perfected piece of military wear, we were also attempting to offer modern individuals a garment they could trust in terms of both design and function."
With a color palette that's easy to style and a silhouette that captures the current mood, this water-resistant, lightweight, short-length jacket is perfect for active pursuits like motorcycle or bicycle touring. Plus, its exceptional storage capacity allows you to go out hands-free.
Roughly 70 years after the MA-1's creation, this piece, born from the convergence of White Mountaineering and Alpha Industries, inherits the legacy of "authenticity" while possessing the "reliability" and "lightness" fitting for our modern times.
In the uncertain Reiwa era, it stands beside people as "apparel that provides a sense of security"—this is the true MA-1 envisioned by both brands.
