Workman "Trico Tech Easy Work Slacks" Achieves Outstanding Comfort & Style

2025.03.03
Workman products feature a variety of functional fabrics. While there are different materials tailored to specific uses, such as lightweight, water-resistant, and abrasion-resistant fabrics, the focus on stretchiness is represented by the “Trico Tech” line.
This time, we spoke to Shinnosuke Kawata, Chief Buyer of Product Development at Workman Co., Ltd., about stories related to the product, with Workman's official ambassador, Koji Yamada.

How Low-Cost, Durable Stretch Fabric Was Developed

Koji Yamada (hereafter, Yamada)First, could you tell us about the background of the development of the “Trico Tech” series?
Shinnosuke Kawata (hereafter, Kawata)The “Trico Tech” series was launched in 2020, but there had been a growing demand for highly comfortable workwear for a while before that.
Previously, Workman's original items primarily focused on low cost and durability, representing what one might call “the work uniform,” with little emphasis on comfort.
KawataThe previously introduced “Bazz Light Stretch” series emphasizes “lightness,” while the “Trico Tech” series prioritizes stretchiness.
However, being workwear, it also needs to offer high durability so that it can withstand daily washing and wearing, and reasonable pricing unique to Workman is absolutely essential.
To meet these three criteria, we collaborated with major textile manufacturers to develop the fabric.
YamadaIt sounds like meeting all those requirements was quite a challenge.
KawataMost stretch fabrics use polyurethane materials. While polyurethane is affordable and offers good stretch, it does have the drawback of degrading easily.
The reason the soles of high-tech sneakers break down over time is due to the deterioration of polyurethane.
Additionally, it can be weak against abrasion and may tear easily. The properties of polyurethane are quite similar to rubber.
Rubber bands, for instance, will eventually snap after prolonged use. A similar degradation occurs with polyurethane fabrics.

In contrast, the “Trico Tech” series fabric is composed of 50% composite fiber polyester and 50% polyester.
To put it simply, one thread is wrapped around another in a spring-like manner. This design allows for some elasticity, creating the stretchiness we seek.

A Design that Meets the Needs of Workers & General Customers, Leading to a Huge Hit

YamadaI remember that the design of the products from the initial launch of the “Trico Tech” series in 2020 was distinct from previous Workman workwear.
From the Workman Autumn-Winter 2020 Catalog
KawataDesigning this product was quite challenging. At the time of the launch, we were actively expanding Workman Plus stores, and products were needed that could meet the needs of both traditional professional workers and general consumers who wear casual, sports, and outdoor clothing. We arrived at this design, inspired by sports and outdoor items.
As a result, it was widely purchased by general customers and adopted as uniforms by many companies, gaining support from a broad audience. This product continues to be available and remains a huge hit.
YamadaSince then, the “Trico Tech” series has expanded its variations. Could you tell us about some representative products?
KawataThe “Trico Tech Easy Work Shirt” has been adopted as a uniform by many companies. It features a stand collar for a neat appearance, while the collar underside is crafted from black mesh fabric for a soft touch that also hides dirt effectively.
Additionally, snap buttons have been used to make it easy to put on and take off, and the original vertical zip pocket on the chest has been angled to enhance usability, making this an all-in-one piece that condenses the essential functions needed in workwear.

YamadaThere is also ventilation in the back part, right?
KawataEven such subtle ventilation requires extensive testing to determine the most effective size and position by making numerous samples.

Developer's Favorite Simple Design Slacks

YamadaIs there a product in the “Trico Tech” series that you particularly like, Kawata?
KawataPersonally, I really enjoy wearing the “Trico Tech Easy Work Slacks” even now. The silhouette is great, and I wear them almost every day (laughs).

YamadaThe tuck design is also distinctive, which has not been common in Workman’s past pants.

KawataLike me, they have received positive feedback for being a design that can be worn at the office. Of course, we're also particular about functionality and durability.
The front features a reliable YKK zip. If this breaks, it becomes difficult to wear the clothing properly.
YamadaWhat kind of workwear do you hope to create in the future?
KawataVaguely speaking, I want to create workwear that feels like you’re not wearing anything at all. After all, the functionality of items from major sports brands, which are priced over ten times that of Workman, is impressive, so I want to launch workwear that uses lighter, more naturally stretchable fabrics at Workman prices, to compete with that.
YamadaI’m looking forward to it!
