200,000 Units Sold Out Instantly! Behind the Scenes of Workman's Evolved "XShelter Insulation β Light Warm Jacket"
"XShelter," a proprietary material developed by Workman, first debuted in the Fall/Winter 2024 season. That season, they released "clothing designed to keep you comfortable in both heat and cold" under the banner of "insulation," and roughly 200,000 units sold out almost immediately. For the following Spring/Summer 2025 season, they rolled out products combining "XShelter" with features like "ultra moisture permeability and release" and "heat protection," all of which proved to be massive hits.
And now, for Fall/Winter 2025, Workman is taking "XShelter" to the next level. They've developed brand-new materials dubbed "Insulation α" and "Insulation β." This time, Workman's official ambassador, Koshi Yamada, sat down with Yutaro Hagura, Chief Buyer of the 6th Product Development Department at Workman Co., Ltd., who was involved in planning the new "XShelter Insulation β Light Warm Jacket," to get the inside scoop on its development.
The Evolved "XShelter": What's the Difference Between "Insulation α" and "Insulation β"?
Koshi Yamada (hereafter Yamada)What was the user feedback like for the "XShelter" line launched in Fall/Winter 2024?
Yutaro Hagura (hereafter Hagura)Most of the products sold out almost immediately after launch, so the response was fantastic. We were especially pleased to see it embraced not just by the general public, but by professional workers as well.
YamadaI was surprised to hear that the incredibly popular "XShelter" is getting a major overhaul less than a year after its debut. Could you tell us more about the newly developed "Insulation α" and "Insulation β"?
Hagura"Insulation α" uses the same mechanism as the original "XShelter." By combining an insulation sheet with heat-generating padding, it creates a "+30-degree 'thermal barrier'" that blocks out the cold outside air.

Hagura"Insulation β" was born from a single idea: could we achieve high insulation performance without needing heat-generating padding? The first step to making that a reality was to develop an ultra-powerful insulating material that would surpass the capabilities of the sheet used in the original "XShelter." On top of that, with "Insulation β," we also set our sights on making the fabric stretchable.
Many of Workman's products are worn not just for work, but also for various active pursuits like sports and outdoor activities. These days, stretchability is a highly sought-after feature for any situation.
If your inner layer is stretchy but your outerwear isn't, you lose half the benefit when you wear them together, right? That's why with "Insulation β," we challenged ourselves to deliver on two key features: "powerful insulation" and "stretch."

YamadaSo what's the mechanism behind it, specifically?
HaguraIt's a combination of three key elements. First is "aerogel," the same stuff NASA uses in its spacesuits. It's incredibly lightweight—often described as "lighter than air"—yet it boasts insulation properties equivalent to five panes of glass.
Next are "PCM microcapsules," which absorb thermal energy by repeatedly absorbing and releasing heat. This helps maintain a comfortable temperature inside the garment and negates the effects of the outside temperature. This is the same material you see in things like the neck coolers that have become popular for combating recent heatwaves.
Finally, we used a "modified polymer skeletal structure," which alters molecular bonds at the nano-level, to achieve true 360-degree stretch.

YamadaWow, that's some seriously impressive tech (laughs).
HaguraIt gets even more complicated if I go into all the details (laughs), but to put it simply, we succeeded in developing a high-performance insulation sheet that's also highly stretchable.
Compared to "Insulation α," the insulation performance of "Insulation β" is 20% higher. It can generate over 20 degrees of heat from light absorption even without heat-generating padding. Plus, it's equipped with powerful antibacterial and anti-odor functions and a moisture permeability of 1000g/m²/24h (per 24 hours).

Packed with Details That Meet Workers' Needs
YamadaCould you tell us more about the "XShelter Insulation β Light Warm Jacket" we're focusing on today?

HaguraWe primarily developed this product with work environments in mind. To be honest, what I'm holding right now is just a prototype in the middle of development. The final version is going to be even more stylish!
YamadaI can't wait. Does it have any special features designed specifically for workers?
HaguraWe've poured all the functionality that Workman has developed over the years into this jacket.
For instance, the chest pocket features a special zipper designed not to open when the pull tab is facing up. It won't slide down on its own, even when you're running, which makes it perfect for stashing your smartphone or wallet.

HaguraOne of the key reasons we developed 'Insulation Beta' is the trend of milder winters. As this trend continues, the demand for heavy-duty outerwear with high cold-weather protection might decline. That said, it doesn't mean we won't have any extremely cold days at all.
Workman has already adopted a standard in some of our products that allows for layering different items, like pairing a nylon shell with a fleece vest.
This 'XShelter Insulation Beta Light Warm Jacket' is also designed to this standard, so you can, for example, wear it under a motorcycle jacket, adding the insulating power of 'Insulation Beta' to the jacket's existing waterproof and cold-proof features.
We were also extremely particular about the fabric's thickness for 'Insulation Beta.' A thicker fabric offers better insulation, but it can make layering tricky, restrict movement, and create a bulky silhouette. We went through countless prototypes to find the perfect thickness.

HaguraThe large-capacity inner pocket is a highly valued feature for work environments. Since tablets have become an essential on-site tool recently, we paid special attention to the pocket's size.

Yamada'XShelter' has evolved quite a bit in the year since its debut. Will it continue to evolve even further?
Personally, I'd love to see clothing that can be paired with items like Peltier vests or air-conditioned apparel to completely block out the summer heat.
HaguraWhen it comes to tackling summer heat, the key isn't about shutting out the external environment, but rather figuring out how to let the heat your body radiates escape. That said, we see it as a challenge on par with winter cold protection, and we intend to explore potential solutions.
YamadaI'm excited to see what you come up with!
