Beta Is Your Secret Weapon for Mid-Winter Action! Unveiling Workman's Serious Commitment: The Lightweight, Breathable X-Shelter Insulated Rain Jacket
Choosing the right winter jacket is a challenge. Even the warmest coat can leave you feeling hot and stuffy during the day or indoors. Bulky, heavy jackets are a pain and limit your mobility.
That's why everyone is looking for outerwear that's lightweight, warm, and breathable. Enter the "X-Shelter®︎ Insulated Beta Premium Ultra-Breathable Waterproof Winter Jacket" from Workman, a jacket designed to be the perfect solution. As the newest entry in a popular series, it has been engineered for next-level comfort.
We sat down with Hisashi Matsushige from the Public Relations Department at Workman Co., Ltd. to get the inside scoop on its development and innovative features.
Unveiling the Secret to the Layered Structure that Balances Warmth and Comfort
A new jacket is joining the popular X-Shelter®️ series. Could you start by telling us about its development?
We aimed to tackle the common complaints about traditional winter clothing—being heavy, stuffy, and bulky. Our goal was to create the "ultimate warm and comfortable rain jacket."Plus, recent winters have seen more extreme temperature swings. It's not unusual for temperatures to fluctuate by more than 10°C between morning and afternoon. For those times when you just "don't know what to wear," we wanted to create the perfect jacket. That's what led us to start developing the "X-Shelter® Insulated Beta Premium Ultra-Breathable Waterproof Winter Jacket" (hereafter, "Insulated Beta").

We heard that customer feedback was also a major driver for this development.
The padded "X-Shelter® Insulated Alpha Waterproof Winter Jacket," which we released for the 2024 season, was incredibly popular. However, we also got a lot of feedback from customers asking for something even more breathable and lightweight. In response to that customer feedback, we adopted our newly developed "Insulated Beta Sheet," which boosts insulation by 30%, and drastically improved its moisture-wicking properties to achieve what we call "ultra-breathability." The "Insulated Beta" has, without a doubt, evolved into a product that perfectly balances warmth and comfort.
The new "Insulated Beta" doesn't have any padding. Does that mean the secret to its evolution lies in the fabric?
With the "Insulated Beta," we've packed all the essential functions—waterproofing, breathability, and insulation—into an incredibly thin layered structure. Specifically, we've sandwiched the "Insulated Beta Sheet" between a high-performance outer shell and an inner lining. This layered construction is the key to its comfort. It automatically regulates the climate inside the jacket, maintaining about 50% humidity and a temperature between 30–33°C, even when you're on a crowded train or step indoors. This is considered the ideal comfort zone for the human body.
Could you elaborate on this layered structure? Let's start with the "Insulated Beta Sheet," which seems to be the key to the jacket's warmth.
It's a revolutionary sheet we're calling the world's first "wearable insulation," and it's made of "Aerogel." Aerogel has a three-dimensional, multi-layered, porous structure. In simple terms, it's a material made up of countless tiny, hollow particles. It's incredibly thin and light, yet it delivers insulation performance that surpasses down. The "Insulated Beta Sheet" is also infused with "PCM microcapsules" that regulate heat. This material changes from a solid to a liquid and back again at a specific temperature. As it phase-changes, it absorbs or releases thermal energy from your body, which helps maintain a comfortable temperature inside the jacket.
Furthermore, it's equipped with stretch properties. This means the "Insulated Beta Sheet" won't feel restrictive when you bend over or raise your arms, ensuring excellent mobility. We achieved this range of motion by using a highly flexible, specialized material.

Got it. So this 'ultra-breathable material' is the secret to its comfort. How exactly does it work?
It's a special material that instantly blasts sweat vapor out of the jacket, almost like a jet stream. This prevents any moisture from getting trapped inside, ensuring you stay completely dry.And I hear its breathability is top-tier, even among all of Workman's products, right?
Absolutely. It's achieved some of the highest performance ratings [1] in the entire history of our waterproof and thermal products. On top of being highly waterproof, it offers incredible breathability that stands up to demanding professional outdoor jobs and intense physical activity, virtually eliminating that stuffy feeling.A Design That Balances Sleek Aesthetics with High-End Functionality
Let's move on to the feel and design. What are the key features of the 'Dannetsu β's' silhouette and fit?
It features a sleek silhouette thanks to its 3D-patterned construction. Along with the articulated shoulders and elbows, we've included an underarm gusset so you can raise your arms and twist your body with total freedom. The combination of the thin 'Dannetsu β Sheet' and a lightweight lining makes it unbelievably comfortable to wear. The design is very clean and simple, but it still has that 'tech-wear' vibe you expect from high-performance gear.
We aimed for a minimalist design that looks great anywhere, from a professional job site to just walking around town. Another standout feature is the seamless exterior, which boosts both its waterproofing and its sleek look. The zippers and bonded details really reinforce its identity as a piece of high-performance gear.
The sheer number of pockets really speaks to its practicality as a piece of performance wear.
Thanks! We designed the main side pockets to be large enough to use while wearing gloves, and they also work as hand warmers. The front chest pocket is perfect for stashing things you need to access quickly, like your phone or keys.We also added an interior pocket on the left chest. It's the perfect secure spot for valuables you need to keep protected from the elements, like a wallet or passport.
And as a neat feature, there’s a dial on the back of the hood. Just turn it to easily customize the fit.

The color options are straightforward: just black and ash beige. That seems a bit limited compared to other items, doesn't it?
This "Insulation β" jacket represents the pinnacle of our company's technology. We intentionally limited it to two colors because we want people to wear it in any setting. The black version offers a sharp look, perfect for anything from business meetings to on-site work. The ash beige blends seamlessly with outdoor and casual styles, giving off a sophisticated vibe.A Testament to Workman's Passion
Could you tell us more about the ideal situations for wearing the "Insulation β"?
It's great for outdoor work, winter camping, mountaineering, and commuting by motorcycle or bicycle. The "Insulation β" also serves as a form of disaster preparedness. It's high-performance wear for everyday use, but it's also designed with disaster prevention in mind, in collaboration with the Research Institute for Disaster Relief and Nursing at the Japanese Red Cross College of Nursing. We hope a wide range of people will wear it, from professional workers who struggle with both cold and stuffiness, to outdoor enthusiasts, and even fashion-forward individuals looking for high-performance design.
This might not be official feedback, but what have you heard from people who've actually worn the jacket?
We've heard some amazing things, like, "It completely changed my idea of warmth," and, "I genuinely worry less about getting chilled from sweat during breaks." Workers, in particular, have told us, "Unlike other down jackets, this one doesn't get stuffy, so it's much more comfortable to get back to work after a break."During development, we ran a thermal conductivity test where a block of ice melted in two minutes on regular fabric. On the "Insulation β Sheet," it took a full 12 minutes to melt. The feedback we're getting from customers really validates those lab results.
It sounds like all the hard work during development really paid off.
Actually, the "Insulation β" is a model we've staked the company's future on. We reinforced its development and production to boost customer satisfaction (CS), learning from a past experience where stock shortages caused our CS to plummet. This fall/winter season's key products will be produced on a scale eight times larger than last year's. We're undertaking what we call a "shockingly serious production run," with a plan for 1.25 million units across the entire "X-Shelter®️" insulated apparel line, totaling 5 billion yen. It’s a testament to Workman's passion for delivering the best technology at the best possible price.
Thank you. I'm excited to put it on and experience this "Workman passion" for myself. Lastly, could you tell us about the future of "Insulation β" and its technology?
The "Insulation β Sheet" is a core technology that will define our company's future. For the 2025 fiscal year, we plan to expand the line to a total of 24 items, including pants, vests, and gloves. Our goal is to create "apparel that constantly maintains an 'ultimate state of no sensation,' where the wearer feels neither hot nor cold." Through technological innovation, we aim to deliver a level of comfort that makes you forget you're even wearing clothes, all at a price anyone can afford. That, we believe, is the ultimate vision for Workman's cold-weather gear.
